OT: NY Mets 2025 Season Thread

MLB failed to detect even ONE of the 4 Yankees taking prohibited substances before the 2009 World Series, denying the Phillies the chance to be the only repeat winner in the 21st Century. Will the Phillies pay the price to bring back Mason Miller with them after their next weekend's series at Sacramento?
Huh?

So you start out by eliminating Soto, which is an admission that you’re wrong. Then you go about conceding that multiple others are performing below their career numbers but are doomed to never reach them again for one reason or another and so we’re left with your batty theory that without Alonso performing at his best we’re done. It’s kind of a mess
We also all have to take into account the really shitty first week or so our offense had.
Over the past 30 days- Soto has an .889 OPS Baty and Vientos are both hitting, Lindor has been Lindor, Pete has slowed down but still hitting, Nimmo is closer to his career numbers, etc...
Last 30 days- Met's are 2nd in BA, 6th in HR 2nd OBP 4th in SLG so pretty darn good offense since the horrible start

vEintos.
He has way too hard of a time making the transfer

Inning all on the butcher , changed everything and where Pete played on bellinger

I challenged you to name names as I did. You still have yet to do so. Let's start there. Who is not performing up to "their past" standard that you think will turn that around this season. I'm not going anywhere. We'll see who's more accurate.

Shades of Lucas Duda.

Vientos is a big concern. He’s a liability at 3b

Soto. Wanted to see a big series from him. Oh well.

Just saw the highlight of the throw by Alonso. 😆 No offense but a lot of his throws look like a female in terms of the form. Even a throw to a pitcher covering first can be an adventure.

Slumping Fat Pete tonight:

Sooner or later it’s going to be computerized like in tennis.

Won’t be long.
Longer than one might think. I don't think we'll see full adaptation of the robot umps anytime soon. What I do envision soon is the challenge system. That is, the ump calls the pitch, but each team gets a certain number of challenges. The challenge must come immediately, and can only come from the pitcher, batter, or catcher. Can't look at replays and then decide.

That is the system that is being tested in the minors, and in some MLB spring training games.

I really don't know if the technology is considered ready. Last I had heard, they were comfortable with the technology for inside/outside calls (which is consistent from hitter to hitter), but not so much with high/low calls (which is not).

Hopefully sooner than later. For everything…balls/strikes, safe/out on the bases, etc. Whatever helps getting it right.

Why would I have to name the names that you withheld and then were forced to name. It would be an unwanted invitation to you spouting predictably negative projections for the future of the whole roster. We now know your position. Everything hinges on Alonso. That's the only guy. You didn't mention Soto wasn't hitting well, and then quickly mentioned his name without fessing up. You said that McNeil can't do any better because of some nutty shift theory that you think is real. You've completely given up on Vientos this year and decided that last year was meaningless. You've given up on Nimmo too, despite a lengthy career that's been more productive than he has been this year. You've decided that no younger prospects will develop. They will all be busts. Alvarez done. Baty done. No one will hit better. Do you have a story on Lindor? Is he about to crash? You say that you're not going anywhere. But shouldn't you? It's over. Alonso's not hitting.

When did I say that Vientos, Alvarez, Baty, Acuna were done or that none of them will become good players. Reading comprehension. Try it. What I did say is that none of them have any well established track record. Which is true. But you won't find any posts from me earlier in the season calling Baty trash and calling for him to be dumped like several posters did. McNeil I absolutely stand by what I said. And don't believe he will ever have a season again like the one where he won a batting title. Stand by what I said about Marte also. Nimmo? Meh. Sure he's had some DECENT years. But just that. He's a career .260 hitter who can give you 15-25 home runs. Basically a dime a dozen as a corner OF. Besides you're one to talk the way you're always trying to downplay the Mets prospects still developing in the minors. I know for sure you did so with Acuna also.

I would expect a lot of hitter promotions coming soon like Jett, Benge, Reimer. A.J. Ewing was promoted once already but he's wearing out Brooklyn as well but that'll take a little more time. Morabito really coming on in Bing in May and same with Snyder in St Lucie.

Tong was lights out again Saturday as well. 6.0 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 2 BB, 8 K, 0 HR, 2.12

What the heck are you talking about? Have you ever watching college girls softball and their throws.

You're probably right. It seems more like he throws like a guy who didn't grow up throwing so it doesn't look natural. Like no extension. Just raises the ball to his ear and just flicks his wrist rather than rear back and firing like a SS or 3rd baseman.

You've run so far away from your initial post that the discussion is unrecognizable. It's a shifting list of things that you failed to say earlier and that now constitute a new list of nutty, reactionary opinions that I want nothing to do with. This is one of those speaks for itself moments. Enjoy.

Okay see ya. Enjoy the games.

It is amazing- Yankees take the series 2-1...up until the last few innings- it still could have went either way...I'm driving home and have wfan on and they make it sound like they never wanted Soto, they showed us and how we are so unrealistic. and this is the team we swept last year.

that was the one thing I knew would annoy me if they took 2 of the games.

It is almost inconceivable how bad the Mets are at scoring a runner from 3rd with less than two outs.

Never knew Seaver was on the Red Sox bench for the 86 World Series. That's kinda crazy.

Anyone remember Mackey Sasser?

Yes, I suspect everyone in this thread above the age of 40 remembers Mackey Sasser. And those who don't remember him know about him.

I suspect far fewer people remember Major League II. But those who do, will remember that Mackey Sasser (not under that name, but it was him) was prominently featured.

I believe that I had mentioned that while he was with the Padres Soto had a reputation of not being a good team mate and is very self centered. Didn't take long to manifest and this is with the team in first place.

Out of first place. Big game today, tomorrow is Tylor against their ace, then the Dodgers come in. Could be a real tough stretch. Need today’s game.

Remember Steve Blass? He went from one of the dominant pitchers in baseball to someone who couldn't throw the ball over the plate.
From Wiki:

Besides his Series performance, Blass is best known for his sudden and inexplicable loss of control after the 1972 season.[3] His ERA climbed to 9.85 in the 1973 season, during which he walked 84 batters in 88+2⁄3 innings, and struck out only 27; his WAR of -3.9 that year remains the worst of any pitcher in the modern era. After spending most of 1974 in the minor leagues, he retired from baseball in March 1975.

A condition referred to as "Steve Blass disease" has become a part of baseball lexicon. The "diagnosis" is applied to talented players who inexplicably and permanently seem to lose their ability to throw a baseball accurately.[3][8][9][10] The fielder's variant of "Steve Blass disease" is sometimes referred to in baseball terminology as "Steve Sax syndrome".

Ha, ha, ha, Michael Kay, a tool in the Yankme toolbox opining on how Soto wanted to remain a Yankme.

It is funny- I have seen a few things from Kay since the Soto signing where he just sounds like a jilted lover.

I admit- Soto's lack of hustle at times pisses me off. And he has been like that his whole career. And he is not having the greatest start. But, even with the Yankees- last year, he carried them for the first month and he had a couple of slumps in there as well. Guys his age are usually the back of their baseball card- so, most likely, we see him end up around .280 30 HR 110 runs, 80+ rbi and .400 OBP and we will love him at times and hate him at times.

And I love the fans of the other team who just last year, were claiming they had the two best hitters in baseball and this year, one of those guys suck...

The catcher who couldn't throw the ball back to the pitcher.
Sasser's problem began after he missed some time after a serious home plate collision. He developed a psychological block where he couldn't throw the ball back to the pitcher. He would double and triple clutch, and then lob it, while runners easily stole bases. Ironically, during the run of play he could throw fine. He eventually moved off catcher and became a utility man and DH.

Interestingly, he later became a JUCO baseball coach and had the same problem throwing batting practice. He eventually overcame it with psychiatric assistance.

Here's what Kay said:

“People that I talked to on the Mets side, and they can deny it publicly, because, of course, that’s what they have to do, he is very, very glum around the clubhouse,” Kay said, according to Awful Announcing. “He does not have a hop in his step. He does not smile much. I’m not gonna say he is unhappy. Because how can you be unhappy with a $765 million contract? But money is not a guarantee that you are gonna be comfortable somewhere.”

This surprises me a bit. I went to two spring training games this year, one away, one in St. Lucie. At these venues, you're close to the field and teams. By far, the most gregarious guy on the field and in the dugout was Soto. Talking and joking with teammates on the field and near the top step of the dugout talking and joking with a stream of teammates. I wasn't looking for it, but you couldn't miss it. It seemed like his new teammates really liked him. And Judge hugged him the other day.

So I don't know what to make of Kay's comments. I really don't listen to the guy because I don't find myself watching Yankee games.

That said, on the thing that matters, the hustling out of the box needs to get better.
