OT: NY Mets Season

Cripes. Did not say "traded" did I? Said dealt. Effectively both were "dealt" off the team when the Mets let both of them become free agents.
Sandy Alderson still sucks.

Dealt means traded. Let go could have been used. Regardless yes Sandy's tenure sure has been weird here but I blame the Wilpons the most for that anyways. Also hard to blame Sandy for those 2 becoming totally different players. Turner one a lot more shocking than Murphy considering he never showed signs of becoming the hitter he did with the Mets.

Did not realize this was the grammar/hair splitting thread. Whatever. Turner was not a bad utility player, and he worked hard to develop his swing. Considering other things that were done such as bringing back Reyes. Other than Frazier and Cabrera, the infield is in shambles.

I think Turner used to party a lot with Ike Davis and that rubbed the team the wrong way. Rosario is supposed to be a stud but hasn't shown much at all to this point. Hopefully Smith or Alonso can handle 1B for the next 5+ years.

Sandy gets a partial pass from me for taking a total pass on Murphy, whom nobody really wanted at the time. Nats really stepped in it with Murph, as he was their Plan C. Zobrist was Plan A and Brandon Phillips was Plan B. In fact the Nats had completed a trade for Phillips but he exercised veto rights.

The reason I only give Sandy a partial pass was that he didn't want to give a long-term deal to a second baseman, because he viewed Dilson Herrera as the heir apparent there. That was a miss.

His refual to make Turner a qualifying arbitration offer, thus letting him walk, was inexcusable. Granted, nobody thought Turner would develop into a power hitting star. But everyone knew that at minimum, he was a solid utilityman who was well worth the $1-2 million he would have gotten in arbitration. I suspect the Wilpons were behind that decision.

Can’t let Murph go after that 2015 playoff run - just can’t.

Turner was a stunner.

I told everyone in 2015 and during the post season: Get rid of the dog, Duda and put Murph at 1B.......was despicable to let him go after 2015 as he single handily got us to the WS.

Yep. Served them right to get whooped by him the past 2 years IMHO.

Everyone agrees that not re-signing Murphy was a mistake. The mistake (which all 30 teams made, else someone would have signed him sooner), was not recognizing that he would make a quantum leap in his offensive production. It had nothing to do with ingratitude. This is a business. Nobody owes you anything for what you did yesterday. You get paid on the basis of what your current or new employer projects you'll do tomorrow.

One other point. It's not like the Mets cut Murphy loose. They did make him an eight-figure one-year qualifying offer, which he declined. In hindsight, that was a mistake on Murphy's part. Had he re-upped for one year, and then been eligible for free agency after the 2016 season, he'd be making Cespedes money now.

Big East Phil killed Lagares and he had 4 hits yesterday.
But remember, Lagares is a POS who will never... EVER change or improve his hitting because hes Juan Lagares, no matter what the stats say (357 avg)... EVER!!!

BTW, Rosario had 3 hits and his avg is up to 261.

Of course we finally have a laugher and the next day Cespedes goes to the DL.

Lagares come on down. Out for the year.
Oh man. What horrible luck. He was doing so well.

His injury was so heroically Mets. Ran into a wall in the ninth inning of a 12-0 game. Made the catch though, so there's that. And sorry haters, but Hansel Robles did not throw the pitch.

The silver lining is that it gives an opportunity to a deserving young outfielder in their talent rich system. Next man up. So many choices. Matt denDekker? Kevin Kazmerski? Or dare I say it, do they go down to AA and...?

deGromination.
Conforto wakes up.

Who is up from minors to fill Lagares' and Cespedes' shoes? According to Sandy---nobody!!!! Brilliant!!!!

Sandy Alderson said the Mets would "not necessarily" call up an outfielder, possibly wanting to stick with 13 pitchers since Friday began a stretch of 18 games in 17 days. Phillip Evans, primarily an infielder, was called up when Cespedes went on the DL and played left field Wednesday.

Saw this comment (not mine) on Sandy on the SNY blog:

To me SANDY has done next to nothing positive while he has been here these 8 years.
Thor, he inherited a CY young winner to trade and DePodesta grab Noah as he drafted him
.
World Series, the Mets got there in spite of SANDY. He made it there on the coat tails of CESPEDES whom he did not want in the first place and MURPHY who he didn't care for and let him leave right after the WS.
CONFORTO was the NCAA player of the year and fell to SANDY at pick 10.
None of the other 241 players who he drafted and signed did squat.
Worst GM in METS history
.

It makes total sense that heading into a stretch of 18 games of 17 days, Sandy would want to go with an eight man pen and a four man bench. It's absolutely unacceptable that there isn't a single damn outfielder in their entire system that can fill one of those four bench slots.

Infielder Philip Evans played left the other day. They're talking about giving Wilmer some run out there. Yuck.

Put Thor or deGrom on their off days out there--that would be in line with other bone-headed moves.

Welp, after officials somehow didnt overturn the call on that stolen base where Dyson was clearly out, Matz did what Matz does best: gives up a two run homer to a random shmuck...

YAY!!!! :mad::mad::mad:

Can they just put Gsellman and Lugo in the starting rotation already and put 100 pitch/4 inning pitchers Matz and Wheeler in the pen?

Can they just DFA Reyes as well and keep Guillorme and bring up Cecchini once and for all?

Never have I wanted to be in a ballpark more than when Reyes just fouled out with the bases loaded.

He sucks. He should know it. The whole stadium should make it abundantly clear.

He knows. He dont care.

And who knew Deven Maseraco would tie the game?

Wow...you're obsessed with the immortal Juan Lagares...:)

For what it's worth:

- He has been in the majors since 2013 and has 20 Career HR's. That's 20...twenty.
- The most RBI's he has ever driven in is 47 in 2014.
- He has only hit higher than .259 once in his career back in 2014.

I would have dumped him last year. He's a 5th OF at best; his defense is overrated and he CAN'T hit.....I don't need that from my CF.

It's awful he's out for the year but at least Nimmo can show whether he belongs and can play every day.

Plus he's injury prone which is not a good for someone in his upper 20's.

Back in 2014, he showed potential but he never was able to capitalize on his so called 'potential" and he has never learned to hit.

Nice win last night...why is Reyes still on this team....and starting....and even in the league?
1) He is only starting occasionally, largely due to Frazier's injury.

2) He is still on the team because:
  • After an abysmal start last year, he was arguably the Mets' best hitter over the second half. Mets are not ready to assume that history won't repeat itself.
  • He is a switch hitter, which is valued on a four man bench.
  • He is still the best baserunner on the team.
  • By all accounts he is an excellent clubhouse presence, specifically, a valuable mentor to Rosario.
He gets another month at least.

Not saying he is a starting OF on a good team and I love having the chance to just put Nimmo out there and let him play everyday...But, it looks like it may have taken time but certainly looks like he learned how to hit this year.
He is also by far the best fielder on the team in the OF.
