OT: NY Mets Season

Sandy, you mean Mickey the dunce?

I absolutely hate this Mets team. They are a bunch of heartless and gutless players. They have shown absolutely no courage the last 1.5 years. Every night it is one of several themes... a) good starting pitching, no hitting; b) good hitting, no starting pitching; c) Good hitting and good starting pitching, then bad bullpen or fielding. There are no leaders on this team. We underestimate the loss of Bartolo Colon from 2 years ago. Sandy needs to get a leader on this team ala John Lester, Jayson Heyward were for Cubs; Verlander for the Astros; Scherzer for Nationals. Do something. Don't just let this team rot and waste the talent.

Need to cheer this forum up. Verlander sounds good--would love to see his wife at games.

Yeah Mickey, my bad. Figgy was pretty brutal by SNY standards. Said that since Familia had thrown 28 pitches the night before, Mickey needed to have somebody else ready. He let Familia give up three hits before he even got Swarczak up. Then he brought him in before he was fully warmed up.
I miss Bobby Ojeda and his brutal honesty. He could be a sour puss, but I loved his unvarnished criticism of the team. He took a shot at Sandy on the way out when they denied him a raise. I wish Sandy well in his recovery, and I hope that he decides to take care of himself (as he indicated) and not return to the team.

Interesting post. Some thoughts:
  1. I would not go so far as to say they are "heartless and gutless" and have "absolutely no courage". That's about the most damning thing you can say about an athlete. I really have no idea how much heart, guts, and courage the Mets have, compared with other teams. I just think they're not very good.
  2. Agree with your point about the absence of leadership. David Wright was that guy when healthy, but he isn't any more. I agree Colon was a leader to the Latino pitchers. But in terms of everyday leadership, the guy whom I really think they miss is Granderson.
  3. That said, it would be foolish for the new triumvirate (not Sandy any more) to go out and get a veteran leader. You really want them to be buyers at this point? Mets are going to have to develop a leader in house. My money's on Nimmo.

What about Todd Frazier? The ToddFather.

How does a batting coach who instructs his players to “lift” their swings still have a job? This team either strikes out or pops up. How many foul outs do we have this year? Get rid of the whole staff. They are a joke.

Oh, and for the love of everything holy, get rid of Reyes. He is a cancer.

We also probably lead the league in inning killing groundout DPs.

Basic little league coaching. Hit it where they ain’t. Dear lord can they drop down a bunt? Put the ball on the ground away from the shift? Sacrifice runners over when there are no outs? Hitting coach is stealing money from us. No wonder why the Wilpons have none to spend

In fairness Smith never said anything about it. It was Callaway who said he didn't have Smith bunting because he had never bunted in a professional game. And why would he? He's been the best hitter on every team he's been on, until now.

Alderson is at fault here on this one IMO. He should be establishing organizational standards from Rookie League on up. Every player should be required to develop certain core competencies (bunting, hitting to the opposite field, two-strike hitting, etc.) and reinforce those skills in games. Even if it means losing the game for the sake of skill development. And if the minor league manager isn't willing to get with the program, Alderson would need to find someone who will.
Agree with your assessment of Alderson and minors. Minor leagues are not about winning; its about developing players.

These Mets may be the worst ny baseball team since the early 90s Mets of Bonilla and saberhagen.

Their hitting coach Pat Roessler never played MLB. Heck, from what I can tell he didn’t play minor league baseball either. Is that common for a HC ?

Late 70s, not close - but this squad is downright annoying.

Looking at the likes of Craig Swan as the ‘stud’

OK, without looking, guess which Birmingham Rumble Pony made the Eastern League ALL-STAR TEAM!!!

If you said Nabil Crismatt, Daniel Zamora, Patrick Mazeika, or Levi Michael, you'd be right, but that's not who I meant.

That's right, Rex Ryan's favorite personal punt protector is a AA all-star. His average is up to .261, which at least means he's a credible AA ballplayer. In June he is slashing .318/.357/.455, which is no joke in any league.

Tebow in pinstripes (Met pinstripes that is) is still a longshot. But it is no longer unthinkable.

I would take Tebow over Reyes 10 times over.
WTF with Mickey Mouse bringing him in to bat tonight with a .186 average?

Time to trade Jake so many reasons why

1. Trade value will never be this high
2. Trade before another injury
3. Wilpons are not spending money on FA so we are not building around him.
4. Minors have some talent but years away.
5. Interest in team. Most fans are only getting excited to watch the Mets 1 out of every 5 games (Jake’s starts). Blockbuster trade will bring in talent to watch

Oh and by the way dear Lord get rid of Reyes and bring up McNeil.

I’m Ok with trading him for the right price. Fearful of the buffoons in charge, especially right now.

I notice that the clamor to make Gsellman the closer has subsided. Of course that could be because we have all forgotten that there is such a thing as a closer.

Why is everyone in a rush to trade deGrom? You have control of him for another 2 seasons after this one. Aces don't grow on trees, and I can name several teams who don't have one. Second, Mets have a history of trading quality pitching away and get nothing in return. Teams are not going to bend over backward for any NY team.

deGrom has sucked the last 2 games.
Trade him to the Reds for Harvey, who seems to have been fixed by their pitching coaches. [roll]

So we control him for another 2 years. OK. Now read my post again. With this team and this ownership we are not winning in the two years he is controlled.

Buy low sell high. This isn't a widows and orphans fund.

We Mets fans should celebrate today. July 1st is the date we make the annual $1.2 million payment to Bobby Bonilla. Only 17 years to go. Must rank as the all time great contracts.
