OT: NY Mets Season

We Mets fans should celebrate today. July 1st is the date we make the annual $1.2 million payment to Bobby Bonilla. Only 17 years to go. Must rank as the all time great contracts.
I have made this point on this board before, but it bears repeating. The Bonilla annuity deal was one of the BEST moves the Wilpons ever made.

Background: At the end of the 1999 season, the Mets still owed Bobby Bonilla one year on his contract at $5.9 million. The Mets wanted out. So they reached agreement with Bonilla to offer him an annuity of $1.19 million per year from 2011 to 2035. The interest rate used in this calculation was 8%, which was not unreasonable at the time. Especially since the Wilpons were raking in double digit Madoff returns.

Here's why it was such a good deal for the Mets:
  1. The $5.9 million savings in 2000 provided the budget room to acquire Mike Hampton, who helped the Mets get to the World Series.
  2. When Hampton left as a free agent, the Mets used their compensatory draft pick to acquire David Wright.

May be a legit chance that David Wright may be back before Cespedes.
A couple of newspaper snippets:

Since signing his four-year, $110-million contract with the Mets after the 2016 season, Cespedes has played in fewer than half of the Mets’ games (118 of 241 through Friday).

Out since May 13 with what the team called a “mild strain” of his right hip flexor, which Cespedes identified as a right quad issue, he still has not attempted to run.

From the sounds of it, however, Cespedes still isn’t doing very much and the Mets can’t expect much anytime soon.

Yeah. He’s feeling a lot better,” Callaway said when asked if he had spoken to his star player recently

Still not sure if Mickey Callaway and Mickey Mouse are not the same thing:

I would add that this type of deferred arrangement was not uncommon at the time. Mets are still paying Bret Saberhagen $250K per year through 2029. For some reason nobody seems to care about that deal. They also made a similar deal with Bernard Gilkey, but when the Mets traded Gilkey to Arizona in 1998, the D-Backs inherited that liability - they just made the last Gilkey payment last year.

NY Daily News reporting that Milwaukee is "very interested" in acquiring Syndergaard, whom apparently the Mets are more willing to deal than deGrom.

So we control him for another 2 years. OK. Now read my post again. With this team and this ownership we are not winning in the two years he is controlled.
With the same management and ownership, you not going to win in five or 10 years with those same prospects from the trade. The head (management) stinks because they continue to make the same stupid/dumb moves.

It's pretty clear that it's not going to be the same management going forward. It will be the same ownership though.

As long as Jeff Wilpon truly call the shots, it's going to be the SOS, no matter who is the GM or manager. Sandy actually had a good deal last year but Jeffy turned them down because he didnt want to pay for any of Bruce's salary and he didnt want to deal with the Yankees even though they were offering g the better prospect.

I wish it could be done:
Mets should cut or send down most of their players to the minors. Bring up the prospects and take your chances with them. Can't be any worse than the product already on the field.
Agree. We already are the worst team in the NL. Let the kids play and develop.

OK so you want to drop most of the current players and bring up the prospects. Let's define "most" as 15. Find me 15 prospects who are even remotely MLB ready. I'll wait.

On second thought, find me five.

Only way you find 5 is by trading Jake and Thor

Then there's the part of my post you missed:

Was at Dick's Sporting Good in Lawrenceville today. Big Clearance Tent Sale in the parking lot. First thing I see are racks of Mets gear. They cleared the store. Laughed when I saw it. Said to the guy working are you giving up already on the season? His reply was they can't even give it away. Diehard Mets fans should go and stock up.

Good idea.

A fan telling me Matz is a goner to be traded, but nothing on Twitter.
Would doubt it would be this early unless it's a deal that is overpaying. Although the American League is pretty much done, the NL is a much different story.

Players to be dealt:

- Zach Wheeler
- Asdrubal Cabrera
- Wilmer Flores (no tears this time)
- Seth Lugo

Per Buster Olney, a Mets trade of deGrom or Syndergaard is "highly unlikely". They would have to be overwhelmed by an offer for either.

Also Olney is reporting that the Mets will likely go outside the organization for a new GM. Minaya, who had been a special adviser to the Wilpons before assuming his interim role as tri-GM, will likely have major input into the decision.

As was the case last year. the players most likely to be dealt or released are the ones on expiring contracts. That would be Familia, Cabrera, Bautista, Mesoraco, Blevins, and Reyes. Familia would bring back a return comparable to Addison Reed last year - three midlevel prospects. Cabrera would be like Neil Walker - one midlevel prospect. Maybe Mesoraco brings back a midlevel prospect as well. That's about it.

I can definitely see Wheeler and Flores being traded. Both are free agents after 2019, and neither is in the club's long term plans. However, neither will bring much in return.

Cannot see Mets trading Lugo. Contending teams want guys with track records, which he doesn't have. No way he will bring back fair value. IMHO he's the type of guy you keep and build around.
