Cespedes may rival it. What is his status? We Mets fans should celebrate today. July 1st is the date we make the annual $1.2 million payment to Bobby Bonilla. Only 17 years to go. Must rank as the all time great contracts.

Derek Jeter says HI.Teams are not going to bend over backward for any NY team.
I have made this point on this board before, but it bears repeating. The Bonilla annuity deal was one of the BEST moves the Wilpons ever made.We Mets fans should celebrate today. May be a legit chance that David Wright may be back before Cespedes.Cespedes may rival it. What is his status?
A couple of newspaper snippets:May be a legit chance that David Wright may be back before Cespedes.
I would add that this type of deferred arrangement was not uncommon at the time. Mets are still paying Bret Saberhagen $250K per year through 2029. For some reason nobody seems to care about that deal. They also made a similar deal with Bernard Gilkey, but when the Mets traded Gilkey to Arizona in 1998, the D-Backs inherited that liability - they just made the last Gilkey payment last year.I have made this point on this board before, but it bears repeating. The Bonilla annuity deal was one of the BEST moves the Wilpons ever made.
Background: At the end of the 1999 season, the Mets still owed Bobby Bonilla one year on his contract at $5.9 million. The Mets wanted out. So they reached agreement with Bonilla to offer him an annuity of $1.19 million per year from 2011 to 2035. The interest rate used in this calculation was 8%, which was not unreasonable at the time. Especially since the Wilpons were raking in double digit Madoff returns.
Here's why it was such a good deal for the Mets:
- The $5.9 million savings in 2000 provided the budget room to acquire Mike Hampton, who helped the Mets get to the World Series.
- When Hampton left as a free agent, the Mets used their compensatory draft pick to acquire David Wright.
Seems like the guy has been scored on in like 10 straight appearances.I notice that the clamor to make Gsellman the closer has subsided. Of course that could be because we have all forgotten that there is such a thing as a closer.
If deGrom did what he was supposed to do, there would have been no issue. . . .Seems like the guy has been scored on in like 10 straight appearances.
I am so done with the Mets. One of my favorite players.NY Daily News reporting that Milwaukee is "very interested" in acquiring Syndergaard, whom apparently the Mets are more willing to deal than deGrom.
With the same management and ownership, you not going to win in five or 10 years with those same prospects from the trade. The head (management) stinks because they continue to make the same stupid/dumb moves. So we control him for another 2 years. OK. Now read my post again. With this team and this ownership we are not winning in the two years he is controlled.
It's pretty clear that it's not going to be the same management going forward. It will be the same ownership though. With the same management and ownership, you not going to win in five or 10 years with those same prospects from the trade. As long as Jeff Wilpon truly call the shots, it's going to be the SOS, no matter who is the GM or manager. Sandy actually had a good deal last year but Jeffy turned them down because he didnt want to pay for any of Bruce's salary and he didnt want to deal with the Yankees even though they were offering g the better prospect. It's pretty clear that it's not going to be the same management going forward. It will be the same ownership though.
I joked about Harvey, but consider this:deGrom has sucked the last 2 games.
Trade him to the Reds for Harvey, who seems to have been fixed by their pitching coaches. [roll]
5-5 last 10 yearsSo what's the Mets record on Bobby Bonilla Day?
Of course they're. 500.5-5 last 10 years

2016- Win

2014-Loss

2012-Loss

Agree. We already are the worst team in the NL. Let the kids play and develop.I wish it could be done:
Mets should cut or send down most of their players to the minors. Bring up the prospects and take your chances with them. Can't be any worse than the product already on the field.
Fact of the day: Cespedes is still 3rd on the team in RBIs for the 2018 season after missing 44 of the team's 81 games. :weary:
If you hit them square in the chin they will go down. [winking]Hitting coaches are pretty worthless.
OK so you want to drop most of the current players and bring up the prospects. Let's define "most" as 15. Find me 15 prospects who are even remotely MLB ready. I'll wait.I wish it could be done:

Only way you find 5 is by trading Jake and ThorOK so you want to drop most of the current players and bring up the prospects. Let's define "most" as 15. Find me 15 prospects who are even remotely MLB ready. I'll wait.
On second thought, find me five.

Good idea. Was at Dick's Sporting Good in Lawrenceville today. Big Clearance Tent Sale in the parking lot. First thing I see are racks of Mets gear. They cleared the store. Laughed when I saw it. Said to the guy working are you giving up already on the season? His reply was they can't even give it away. Diehard Mets fans should go and stock up.
Would doubt it would be this early unless it's a deal that is overpaying. Although the American League is pretty much done, the NL is a much different story.A fan telling me Matz is a goner to be traded, but nothing on Twitter.
A bag a peanuts and a player to be named later should get all 4Players to be dealt:
- Zach Wheeler
- Asdrubal Cabrera
- Wilmer Flores (no tears this time)
- Seth Lugo
As was the case last year. the players most likely to be dealt or released are the ones on expiring contracts. That would be Familia, Cabrera, Bautista, Mesoraco, Blevins, and Reyes. Familia would bring back a return comparable to Addison Reed last year - three midlevel prospects. Cabrera would be like Neil Walker - one midlevel prospect. Maybe Mesoraco brings back a midlevel prospect as well. That's about it.Players to be dealt:
- Zach Wheeler
- Asdrubal Cabrera
- Wilmer Flores (no tears this time)
- Seth Lugo
