OT: NY Mets Season

Calling BS on Cincinnati and their announcers:

SELECTED PAYROLL DATA:
#6 - New York Yankees $178K
#12 New York Mets $150K
League Average $138K
#23 Phillies (division leader) $103K
#25 Cincy $99K

The Mets spend enough. Would it be nice if they spend more, as in the glory days of Minaya and Madoff? Yeah, it would. But they spend enough.

They just spend stupid.
They are not putting the insurance money from Wright and Cepedes contracts back into payroll. So take away Cespedes $29M and Wrights $20M and they have $101M for 2018.

***EDIT: SORRY 75% OF THAT $49 MILLION THATS RECOUPED FROM INSURANCE.

I don't know the terms of Cespedes insurance policy, but I doubt the Mets have collected much if anything on it so far. After all, he played in a game just three weeks ago.

Fair point about the Wright policy.

If you look at MLB.com's Anthony DiComo Tweets from 2 weeks ago, the Mets have the same David Wright insurance policy on Yoenis Cepedes.

Sometimes the best trades are the ones you don't make,Wheeler baby!!!
If only the Mets could play with a healthy power 3 starting rotation of deGrom, Thor and Wheeler, and get run support like saw this past week.

In other words, if only the Mets could pay 140 games against the Reds and Marlins, they would be contenders!!!

If we people are complaining about lack of spending they are clueless. They have a 160 million dollar payroll. It is the decision making of the people hired by the Wilpons that is the issue.

They are not spending 160 million. Due to losses recovered from insurance, David Wright is not costing them much. Cespedes will be in the same situation next year. Instead of using that recovered money to help the team, they are more interested in dumping more salary like Familia for nothing. Sure, poor GM decisions are part of the problem, but it starts with the Wilpons.

Tweet from Mike Puma of NY Post:

Mets began the year with dynamic duo of deGrom/Syndergaard. It's become deGrom/Wheeler - with a chance to be a terrific trio that also includes Syndergaard.
It seems Thor has the better head compared to Harvey if he ends up the 3rd guy here.

That’s not a bad 1, 2, 3 if you ask me.

David Wright begins a minor league rehab assignment in St. Lucie. He is scheduled to play five innings at 3B. So if all goes well he's back this year. Some have speculated he wants to return this year and then retire. I am not in his head, but I cannot see that at all. I can't imagine he's gone through all this time, effort, and pain for a one-time appearance. I believe he wants to finish out his contract. We shall see.

On the lighter side, Jacob Rhame is now in his SEVENTH tenure with the Mets all in one year! And there's still plenty of year left!

1) Jacob was on the opening day roster, sent down April 13.
2) Called up April 27, sent down April 28.
3) Called up May 15, sent down May 30.
4) Called up June 8, sent down June 17.
5) Called up July 9, sent down July 10.
6) Called up July 11, sent down August 2.
7) Called up August 5.

They must see something in him, they keep bringing him back!
And Rhame is now seven up, seven down. For the seventh time this year, he is off to Vegas. No replacement announced yet but it reportedly Peterson.

"I think the deck chairs look better arranged THIS way, Captain."

0-3 with 2 Ks. Yup... Just what the Mets fans need.

Tough crowd. First game of a rehab assignment. Results are irrelevant. All that matters is getting his timing back, shaking off the rust, and most importantly testing his health.

Whether or not we need David Wright is irrelevant. We got him. By rule the maximum rehab assignment for a non-pitcher is 20 days. Coincidentally that takes us to September 1 when the roster limits go up. Assuming he does not have a health setback, at that time he MUST be activated or released. Either way, the insurance payments end. He'll be activated.

Welcome back, Captain.

He's still batting better than Reyes.

Oh wait, Reyes had a good day today with a 2 run HR--he will likely get a 3 year deal out of today's performance.

On the Mets.com home page, they list Team Leaders. The first listing is for batting average. The leader is Brandon Nimmo - at .245! I checked to verify that this was right. It is. Cabrera is gone and Flores doesn't have enough plate appearances to qualify. Conforto is second at .235, followed closely by Rosario at .234. They're the only qualifiers on the roster.

Team batting leader hitting two-forty-flippin'-five. There are no words.

I find the Mets funny. The Mets let Daniel Murphy walk because they were concerned with his lack of defense. Not only can't the Mets play sound defense, now they can't hit. At least Murphy could do one of the requirements well. They don't have anyone worth sh*t right now.

I'm not going to kill the Mets for not being willing to go long on Murphy. No one (including the Nats, who eventually signed him) viewed him as anything more than Plan C. Sometimes you hit the jackpot.

Part of the reason the Mets passed on Murph three years ago because at the time, they thought Dilson Herrera would be their 2B for years to come. Can we get a mulligan on that one?

The snub that still gnaws at me is Justin Turner. Granted, no one thought he'd develop as he did. But even if he hadn't, he would still have been a very valuable utility guy. Well worth the $2M that he would have commanded in arbitration, which the Mets declined to offer.

Think the Mets might have a few more HRs if they switched to Yankee stadium.

I'm guessing the animus toward Olbermann is not totally based on his sports commentary, but whatevs.

I actually find the crew quite entertaining. Kurkjian is always solid, and Perez is sneaky good. As for Olbermann, yes he is full of himself and tends to make it about himself, but as a sports guy he's damn good. Always has been IMHO. Obviously he's not a traditional play by play guy, but TBH for baseball I don't think you need one.

When you're a fan of your local team and its very popular broadcast crew, and you get somebody else, that somebody else is not going to be real popular no matter how good a job they may do.

Don’t see it. They repeat a lot of the same things. Darling and Hernandez give you players perspective and generally seem more knowledgeable then these 3. Also Gary Cohen is a professional. Knows when to let the other two talk but will take an occasional jab at them to keep them on their toes

I did find their endgame very disappointing. Once the game got to 7-3, they went into full entertainment mode as though it were 17-3.

I was like, "Guys, I see that you don't care about the bottom of the ninth, but some of us do!"

Pitched 2 total strikes to those three walked batters too. A true Familia gem.
I have a mental picture of his sweating pouting face, looking up to the sky,man I don't miss that look!!! As the pressure mounts to get the WC home game or catch Houston, the familiar Familia will makes it's appearance more and more,

Jay Bruce began his rehab at Port St. Lucie tonight. Played 5 innings in RF, went 0 for 2 with a K and a BB. He will get a lot of work at 1B during his rehab, and presumably when he's back with the Mets.

If the Mets are to contend in 2019, Bruce must return to his prior form of 35 HR and 100 RBI. Not impossible, since he did that just last year.
