OT: Rick Beato YouTube Discussion on Music

I’ll make a hot take here that I’m sure some will disagree with, but here it goes. One of the best things that could have happened to music was Kurt killing himself so the world could finally be exposed to the full genius’ of Dave Grohl. Dave Grohl himself would rip this take to shreds but it is one I stand behind. Foo fighters are far and away the better band.

No. Both bands are great, but Nirvana was a little bit better, IMO, as Kurt was a better songwriter.

Agree, she was amazing. I'm guessing you saw the documentary on her, which was really well done. Her Back to Black album is one of the finest of the last 20 years.
I did see one of the documentaries, I forgot the name, maybe it was “Back to Black”. That album is fantastic and one of my favorites from the past 20 years.

Disagree wholeheartedly. Half nirvana’s hits were covers and all kurt really did was whine in his lyrics. Also kurt was notorious for stealing guitar riffs ‘Come as you are’ is ‘Eighties’ by Killing Joke, ‘SLTS’ is ‘Godzilla’ by Blue Oyster Cult, ‘All Apologies’ is ‘The Waiting’ by Tom petty…. Just to name a few of many.

I respect kurt, but I don’t think anything he did comes close lyrically to ‘Times like These’ and ‘Learn to Fly’

KC was pure genius and able to tap into the mood/psyche of the time. On paper, was DG a better "musician"? Based on all their work.....maybe. However, since KC died so young, he was never able to mature and evolve like DG did. As such, it's hard to compare the two.

@Rhuarc - Didn't DG say that KC was such a genius that he would have played the triangle to be in a band with him. Something like that?

How, specifically?
Listen to the vocals of both songs

Again I don’t hate nirvana or Kurt, I just don’t believe nirvana stacks up musically with the foo fighters which was the entire point

Probably because someone on Twitter said so. LOL!
Or I play a little music for fun and can hear obvious correlations, then when I play the songs I see how similar they are. There's more examples of Kurt plagerizing music. "Polly" is an exact acoustic copy of "On the Streets" by the 4 Skins, the Guitar riff for "Breed" is a complete ripoff of the baseline from "Potential Suicide" by the Wipers, "About a Girl" was a ripoff of a Flaming Lips song that I'm blanking on the name of but I'm sure you can look up on google, that's just off the top of my head. I don't know that any are more egregious than "Come as you are" to "Eighties". Those are as similar as Vanilla Ice sampling David Bowie.

Again, love and respect to Kurt however he absolutely gets overhyped for his "creativity"

"The vocals"?

They don't have the same lyrics. Cobain and Petty don't really sound alike.

Still waiting on your explanation as to why they're "the same".

Melodies... It's subtle but it's there. Focus on the main Hook where Kurt screams "Married! Buried! Yea Yea yea Yea" and Compare that to the hook of "The Waiting" where Petty sings "The Waaaaiiiiting is the Hardest Part!", you'll hear it. It's not as egregious as the others I'll admit however it's definitely there.

Care to comment on any of the other examples I gave?

I don't know the other songs you mentioned all that well.

I know Petty's catalog, cold. Pretty much note for note.

I also know that you way over-rotated on this pair, so I don't really feel compelled to go further.

hmmm but yet you overlooked the first two songs I listed prior to All Apologies? Weird that you had to skip over those to make your way to "All Apologies" and selected only that one being it was the only "vocal" ripoff I listed. The others the Guitar riffs are just pure plagerism, plain and simple. It's an Artist stealing others art. I also don't believe you don't know Blue Oyster Cult.

People forget that Kurt was well aware and open about stealing other artists work. Heck Kurt Cobain himself didn't want "Come as you are" released because they already nearly got sued by the band Mudhoney after he ripped off one of their songs on their first album and the only reason they didn't get sued was the bands shared record labels. He knew he ripped off Killing Joke with "Come as You Are", and to his credit, actually pleaded with the manager of the record label not to include it on Nevermind however the record producer was willing to pay whatever legal ramifications came as a result.

Now getting back to the original point.... without Kurt killing himself the world would not have gotten the superior band, the Foo Fighters. It's not nice to say aloud but it's a take I stand behind

Go find someone who actually knows something about music and ask them to explain chord progressions to you.

lol, I've played guitar for 20 years... Tell me how "Come as you are" is not a total and complete ripoff of "Eighties" by Killing Joke. It's literally the exact same chord progression with 1 note changed. "Polly" the EXACT same chord progression as "On the Steets" by the 4 Skins. No need to be close minded, it's perfectly clear with one listen!

There are thousands of songs that have the same chord progressions.

As @RUGuitarMan just pointed out - I IV V alone is pretty much everything in blues rock.

Hot take. Foo fighters are meh.

I never liked Foo Fighters but I like Dave Grohl a lot.
I'll was impressed when he broke his leg falling off a stage and yet finished the show.
I've considered that maybe he was pre-medicated lol

I don't dislike foo fighters by any stretch...I just don't love or revere them like some do.
I saw them open for the Stones at Giants stadium years back. My wife loves some of their stuff.
For me they've always been......eh.
The only one of their tunes I've ever enjoyed was There Goes My Hero.
BTW, if my man J Mascis had agreed to become Nirvana's drummer back when, perhaps we never would have heard of Grohl.

None of Nirvana's 10 biggest hits were covers, so that statement is ridiculous, but having said that, their covers were inspired covers often meant to shine a light on lesser known, but deserving bands, like the Vaselines, Mudhoney, and the Meat Puppets, with several of their other covers being obscure songs by bigger artists (like Bowie's "Man Who Sold the World").

And Come As You Are ripped off from Killing Joke's "Eighties?" Sure, there is some similarity, but that's pretty common in R&R - and "Eighties" sounds a lot like a "Life Goes on" by the Damned. And the rest of Come As You Are, sonically, is nowhere close to Eighties. SMLTS and Godzilla? Please - I've heard both thousands of times and seen both bands live and never would have thought anyone would think they sound similar.

You're simply out of your depth here. My guess is you probably heard a few friends say Nirvana ripped off bands X and Y and found your "proof" on Google. Listen to people like Beato talking about what an incredible songwriter and singer Cobain was and how Nirvana's music changed the world, which it did. Foo Fighters are great, but Nirvana was one of the 5-10 most important bands in the history of rock and roll.

Never said they weren’t important. Heck I believe The Sonics are one of the single most important rock bands of all time, more so than Aerosmith. Popularity is only a factor in a bands ‘greatness’. I also don’t believe foo fighters are ‘more important’ to music than nirvana, never said that. Just that they are a better band with better music.

Back to nirvana, ‘Lake of Fire’ and ‘The man who sold the world’ were DEFINITELY in their top 10 hits. David Bowie was lesser known in the 90’s? Lol ok…

They obviously were insanely popular and their popularity at the time of Kurt’s death absolutely added to their luster.

There’s nothing out of my depth about this. Kurt cobain himself once said ‘i only steal from the best’. He quite literally begged the manager not to release ‘come as you are’ because he knew he ripped off Killing Joke, and after they nearly got sued by mudhoney they first time they did it (and only didn’t because the bands shared record labels)

I don’t hate kurt or nirvana, they are simply blown out of proportion because we glorify dead artists. Heck if Fred Durst died in 1999 people would glorify Limp Bizkit as they were at the time, the biggest band in the world. Music was terrible, but that’s just how society works.

From a songwriting standpoint, Dave Grohl ranks up there with some of the best. He wrote and released ‘Everlong’ 3 years after Nirvana’s lyrical masterpiece ‘Rape Me’ was released.. which let the record show, if you consider ‘In Utero’ to be a quality ‘lyrical’ album I’ve got some beachfront property in Kansas for you. The entire album was trash. Nevermind was excellent, you’ll get no argument from me on its greatness besides Kurt stealing riffs. But that’s just the reality, nirvana had 1 good album, rose to the top of the charts, the junkie singer off-ed himself abandoning his 1 year old and wife, and because it was the 90’s society chose to glorify him further

Nirvana was a good band, foo fighters are a better one.. coming from the guy who suggested you get back into disc golf😉👍

Same chord progressions yes, same notes, no. It’s alarming how many of their songs they ripped off.
Let’s let the record show Nirvana are not mutually exclusive in this, Led Zeppelin and Jimmy Page in particular are some of the worst offenders in the history of music at stealing riffs and Melodies without crediting the artists they stole them from

This doesn't make any sense, unless what you're *trying* to say is that it's the same chord progression in different keys, i.e. I IV V in Cmaj would be C / F/ G, where as I IV V in Amaj would be A / D / E.

Oh no, I’m saying the exact same notes… verbatim. Same key, same chord progression, same exact notes.

Didn’t realize it would upset so many for just calling out the facts of how the foo fighters are a better overall band than nirvana. I understand nirvana was more influential, never said they weren’t. Strictly the music between both bands is honestly incomparable. Nirvana had some of the simplest tunes of all time to play, catchy for sure, but incredibly simple. Heck that’s worked for lots of artists, Tom petty being another example. 👍

Lol, don’t have twitter. Though it’s amusing how much it upsets you that someone call out nirvana…. Hate to break this to you, but this has been a known thing for years, in fact Dave Grohl actually took steps to ‘pay back’ killing joke in 2003 long after Kurt died because he flat out knew they stole the guitar riff for one of their biggest singles ever.

Also, a quick Google shows that what people (and @yessir321, presumably) are talking about is the INTRO to both songs - claiming "they're exactly the same". One guy on a "Eighties" tutorial vid actually commented "Thanks, now I know how to play "Come As You Are".

None of these people are musicians. And no, the aforementioned commenter does NOT know "how to play Come As You Are".

Here's the first 2 measures of both songs:

Come As You Are:

D D Eb / E G E G E E Eb

Eighties:

E E G E G E D / E Bb E E Bb E G E

What's confusing the unlearned is the tempo, which is similar. But that's like saying "All blues songs are the same because of the shuffle". It's an inherently uneducated POV.

With 3.44 Million subscribers, Beato, a producer and player has one of the best YouTube channels covering rock music. Lot's of interesting discussions. One of my favorites was his discussion with the bassist from Nirvana, Kim Thayil from Soundgarden and the SubPop Records producer (or owner). What are you favorite Beato episodes?

@T2Kplus10 , @RU848789 , @bac2therac , @RU4Real , @ashokan , @RUGuitarMan

Here he rips on the Top 10 songs.

Giving major props to Nuno Bettencourt of Extreme:

Really glad you posted this. I've been complaining about music today (Rap, Hip Hop and whatever popular is calling itself) as a return to the 50's.

By this I mean the prevalence of 3 chord songs (La Bambaesque) or the ever popular four chord (do wa city baby) i, IV, VIm, V (e.g. Tears on My Pillow, Come Go With Me etc.).

Thanks

Not entirely sure what you mean by this. Songs with 3 or 4 chords in progression have pretty much always been the standard for everything except classical and jazz.

BTW - vi is sufficient. The 6 chord in a major scale is always minor, and expressed using lower-case Roman numerals.

Meandering further down the music theory road, the vi chord is important because it's the root chord in any natural minor scale - natural minor is built off the vi chord of the corresponding major. Stylistically, this relationship prompts the shift from a major chord progression to the same chord progression in the natural minor. Andy Summers (The Police) does this a LOT.

Lol, invite me to your tailgate. I’ll show up with my acoustic, play both for you and laugh at how similar they are over a beer with you. Heck if you wanna learn we can get the intro down to both in about 20 min. It’s not just the intro man, it’s the main riff throughout both songs…. We can go over Polly and the 4 skins after which are in fact, the exact same👍

This is the kind of post that is so annoying. It's not a "fact" that either band is better - this is music and it's subjective, meaning it's an opinion, not a fact that one band is better than the other. Same thing about the music being "incomparable." To me and many others (meaning it's our opinion), Nirvana's better songs are much more "musical" than those of the FF's, especially when Nirvana is so creative going from fast to slow and back again, which adds so much tension and anticipation to those songs (and yes, Kurt has cited how good the Pixies were at this, but it doesn't mean he "stole" from them). You're obviously entitled to your opinions, but please stop calling them facts.

Also, Man Who Sold the World is the only cover among Nirvana's top ten hits on Billboard and streaming data has 3 of Nirvana's top 20 songs being covers, both of which are way less than half, which is what you originally said - off the cuff wrong statements wreck your credibility on this. Lastly, I didn't say Bowie was lesser known, I said that song was - it may have been the title song from the album, but it wasn't even released as a single, so yes, it was an obscure Bowie song in the US before Nirvana covered it (but not in the UK where Lulu had a hit with it in the 70s).
