OT: Springsteen Interview on Stern Show

Stern interviewed Lily Tomlin and Jane Fonda together about 3 years ago. I recall listening back in the 80's when he poked fun of Tomlin by stating "she's has no talent and gets her laughs by acting like a douche." Of course when he interviewed her recently, Stern praised Tomlin's acting and comedic genious. LOL

People change over time. I loved Howard and his antics in my 20-30s. I don't think I would enjoy that at this stage of my life. I will say, he is one of the best interviewers around today. The Springsteen interview was really good.
He is very far from one of the best interviewers around, unless the Springsteen interview represents his work. His interviews are usually horrible train wrecks, but I have not listened in the last several years, when every interview was constant interruptions by Howard and Robin, his same schtick, asking the same dumb, risque questions, and always projecting his own Daddy issues onto his guests.

I'm probably one the biggest Bruce fans on the board. I've seen him in concert ~130 times. The interview is one of the best ever for Howard and Bruce. I just wish Howard asked Bruce about the outrageous ticket situation for the upcoming tour. I wonder if Howard was not permitted to ask about it? Bruce has never addressed it.
P Mike. Like you, huge fan who has seen him over 100 times. But not this tour. To get in bed with the Devil, Ticketmaster, really upsets me. Take you dynamic pricing and shove it.

To each his own. MJ could play instruments, but wasn't considered proficient; however, he also had an amazing ability to visualize every instrument in a song in his head and put them all together in a song, as per the excerpt below. You may not love his music, but his musical genius is astonishing.

A top team of engineers and producers would work on the tracks that he brought into the studio but even they were wowed by his genius. Rob Hoffman, sound engineer, describes the process (h/t Rhythm Of The Tide):

“One morning MJ came in with a new song he had written overnight. We called in a guitar player, and Michael sang every note of every chord to him. “’Here’s the first chord, first note, second note, third note. Here’s the second chord first note, second note, third note’, etc etc. We then witnessed him giving the most heartfelt and profound vocal performance, live in the control room through an SM57,” says Hoffman.

“He would sing us an entire string arrangement, every part. Steve Porcaro once told me he witnessed MJ doing that with the string section in the room. Had it all in his head, harmony and everything. Not just little eight bar loop ideas. He would actually sing the entire arrangement into a micro-cassette recorder complete with stops and fills.
I've read similar stories about Brian Wilson. Personal issues aside, the musical genius of these people just simply astounds me.

To each his own I guess. I think Howard gets more out of his guests than anyone

Those are some pretty die hard Springsteen fans. I am sure the average person learned a lot about Bruce from the interview. I did not know he sang for Clemons when he was dying.

Thread about two 70 year old men.
Could easily confuse it with an RIP thread.

There was a "Jerry Lewis is dead, no he's not dead, oh wait he is dead" series of threads last week.

It's not as if Springsteen has had an influential musical career spanning 50 years....oh wait. I'll assume you plan on never getting old or that when you hit 70, you'll spontaneously combust.

There are geniuses in classical music, jazz, hell...all kinds of music. But that doesn't mean that they ever created anything I would enjoy hearing. I once saw Pharoah Sanders play two different riffs on two different saxaphones at the same time. But I didn't run out and buy his records. His talent was impressive, but I didn't wanna hear the sounds he was making a second time. Obviously my tastes are different than yours. I have little tolerance for lightweight bubblegum pop. Or song and dance men. I'm mostly a rock/reggae guy.
Cada loco con su tema.

That's why I said to each his own, although to dismiss MJ as "lightweight bubblegum pop" is inaccurate. He had quite a few songs that rocked.

Good old fashioned Fender 351 in medium, for me.
I just tried these and like them but I need something grippier. Dunlap Max Grips are not bad. Putting 1 or 2 paper punch holes in picks makes anything better but I'm trying the Cool's next.

I respect your opinion and, right now, I completely agree with it.

I'm a sucker, though. When March rolls around I'll probably continue to bitch and moan, but then pay the freight to see at least one show on the tour.

That is a fair point. As with most opinions on judging art, this is subjective. A non-instrumental song is lyrics and the music. To me, some songs are great mostly because of the lyrics, and there are a lot of Bob Dylan songs that fall into that category. Springsteen has a lot of fantastic lyrics coupled with the musical arrangement. Jungleland, Backstreets, Candy's Room, Darkness on the Edge of Town, Born to Run are good examples. But then there are songs like Tougher than the Rest and One Step Up where the lyrics totally dominate the song, and that is not saying the music is not good, but not in the league of the aforementioned songs.
Listen to ‘Born to Run’ then follow it up with ‘Yesterday’ and talk to me about lyrics… lol jk

Great points. For my own tastes the sweet spot combo of musical arrangement and lyrics was always Floyd.

Agree McCartney is a great song writer. I love his work. Dylan to me is more of a great lyricist than a great songwriter. Just my opinion.
Obviously, Dylan, McCartney, and Springsteen are all candidates for the songwriters Mt. Rushmore. But as an aside, since I know you like alt/indie music, too, have you ever listened to the Decemberists? For bands since 2000, I'll put them (and their main songwriter/singer, Colin Meloy) up against anyone and they're a really good live band too. Meloy would've almost certainly been a poet 100+ years ago. Here's one of my favorites, Yankee Bayonet, a story about star-crossed lovers from the Civil War...

Not familiar with the Decemberists but that's a big endorsement, coming from you. I'll keep them on my radar.

It's funny- While I have enjoyed his music over the years, I have never had this whole NJ love for Bruce. BUT....and a big BUT

Though my wife and I have been together for almost 20 years, we only just got married in 2018.

Bruce was on top of my mind with maybe one of the greatest love stories ever told. "If I Should Fall Behind"

My wife and I recited it together as our vows together.

We said we'd walk together baby come what may
That come the twilight should we lose our way
If as we're walking a hand should slip free
I'll wait for you
And should I fall behind
Wait for me
We swore we'd travel darlin' side by side
We'd help each other stay in stride
But each lover's steps fall so differently
But I'll wait for you
And if I should fall behind
Wait for me
Now everyone dreams of love lasting and true
Oh, but you and I know what this world can do
So let's make our steps clear that the other may see
I'll wait for you
And if I should fall behind
Wait for me
Now there's a beautiful river in the valley ahead
There 'neath the oak's bough soon we will be wed
Should we lose each other in the shadow of the evening trees
I'll wait for you
Should I fall behind
Wait for me
Darlin' I'll wait for you
Should I fall behind
Wait for me
Yeah, I'll wait for you
Should I fall behind
Wait for me
I'll wait for you

Wait for me

Another great love song by Bruce-Kingdom of Days:

With you I don't hear the minutes ticking by
I don't feel the hours as they fly
I don't see the summer as it wanes
Just a subtle change of light upon your face

Walk away, walk away, walk away, walk away
This is our kingdom of days

I watched the sun as it rises and sets
I watched the moon trace its arc with no regret
My jacket around your shoulders, the falling leaves
The wet grass on our backs as the autumn breeze drifts through the trees

Walk away, walk away, walk away, walk away
This is our kingdom of days

I love you, I love you, I love you, I love you, I do
You whispered "then prove it, then prove it, then prove it, to me baby blue"
When I count my blessings and you're mine for always
We laughed beneath the covers
And count the wrinkles and the grays

Sing away, sing away, sing away, sing away
Sing away, sing away, my darling, we'll sing away
This is our kingdom of days
This is our kingdom of days
This is our kingdom of days
This is our kingdom of days
This is our kingdom of days

-----
In an interview about the song, Springsteen explained:

“It’s a line about time and I’m old enough to worry about that a little bit. Not too much but a little bit [laughs]. And at certain moments time is obliterated in the presence of somebody you love; there seems to be a transcendence of time in love. Or I believe that there is. I carry a lot of people with me that aren’t here any more. And so love transcends time. The normal markers of the day, the month, the year, as you get older those very fearsome markers… in the presence of love – they lose some of their power.

But it also deals with the deterioration of your physical body. It drifts away, it’s just a part of your life. But beauty remains. It’s about two people and you visit that place in each other’s face. Not just the past and today, but you visit the tomorrows in that person’s face now. And everybody knows what that holds."

My wife and I got married in Jamaica in 2000. To my surprise we had to choose a song for the occasion. After much thought (I'm possibly the biggest Bob Marley fan there is) I suggested "If I Should Fall Behind". My wife loved it.
They don't call him The Boss for nothing.

Amazing song and just sums up what lasting love should always be about.

Yeah Lindbergh had more than an affinity for Hitler. He was an American Nazi.
He also had three different women in Germany that he had secret relationships and children with.
While married to the woman he loved so much back in the USA.
Post WWII of course.

Not a Howard Stern fan, that being said. He does a pretty good interview. Heard his interview with Joe Namath, it was pretty good.
Springsteen has longevity going for him. He’s been on the charts since the 70’s and still going strong.
He’s got my vote for #1.
Hey Pat Hobbs how about pulling some strings and ask him to sing the National Anthem for the football games.
No problem getting fans in their seats for kickoff. Or selling out the stadium for that matter.
Bruce isn't volunteering, and Rutgers can't afford his appearance fee.

I like that song but there are some pretty mediocre versions of it imo

This one I liked the best

Reminds me of some other prominent individuals these days. Won’t mention names since some on here will take a fit.

Just finished the interview finally and thought it was very good! Classic Stern before he became political, just talking to his guest and pulling out some good stories, which Bruce had plenty of. Especially loved the one about him handing his Oscar to his dad and his dads response.

Not a Jimmy Fallon fan, and he tends to fawn over Bruce too much, but this was pretty good.

And Bruce's description of whether it is Mary's dress sways or waves it quite hilarious. He says that he was a freak and a micromanager on details, and admitted that "waves" in the lyrics printed with the album is an erro.

The full interview will be available on HBO Max.

Howard was on Morning Joe yesterday and basically did a one hour interview about a two hour interview - which is pretty funny.
