OT: The US Open on FOX is an absolute joke

It may be a links course but I find it very hard to watch with very little greenery. I am not a naturalist by inclination so I am going to pass on the last 2 rounds.(I was tempted to spell pass differently but thought better of it)
Who's idea was it to build a golf course on top of a strip mine?

I played on a golf course in Northern NJ about 25 years ago that was built over a rock quarry and it had many of the same features as a Chambers Bay. Is it still there? Also played at The Quarry which is near Palm Springs, CA. Great course and fun to play.

I've been to Chambers Bay a few times and it is breathtaking and beautiful.,Many of you are right, it doesn't show as well on the TV screen. The greens are far better than they appear (IMO). Take a visit and play a round, you won't be disappointed. But be prepared to mess with your handicap.

Fox is unwatchable and the only way I can get through it is with the mute button on.

Crystal Springs in Vernon , Sussex County. A couple of scenic holes where you hit over lake filled quarry and the green is about 100 ft below. Since then many other newer courses have been built in that area (Ballyowen, Wild Turkey, Black Bear) and a few others.

Anybody else notice Jason Day getting ready before teeing off on 1 ? He looks pretty nervous to me. Hope he can finish walking this course.

Twisted Dunes outside AC has a Chambers Bay look without the altitude changes and of course it's a whole lot easier.

Legends Moorland in Myrtle Beach is along the same idea but, once again, it's a hell of a lot flatter.

I have noticed that he's playing very erect and not bending too much or dropping his head when he retrieves his ball from the hole.

Always liked Greg Norman...adds a lot to the game without being so negative like Johnny Miller (which is sometimes fun to listen to as well in that regard).

Liked what FOX did in regards to hole close-ups, drone camera angles and super slow mo;s...and amazing shots of the bay, course and Mt Rainier...all in one show.

The challenge why this Open isn't exciting as others is that the crowd is limited to only certain sections of the course do to is condition/location.

There are 5-6 holes (1/3 of the entire course) where spectators are not allowed to walk or even sit/view...so fans can't even follow their favorite players/groups.

There is no way the US OPEN will ever be coming back to this course again anytime soon (nice course to play, but its a terrible course for spectators in person...as much of the reason why this course was built was to secure the US OPEN (helped with its publicity), which is why they engaged the USGA during its construction.

With fan interaction (and their ooohs and aaaahs and applause/cheers) severely limited...its hurt the "excitement" of the broadcast....and then when the Top 3 most popular players (Tiger, Phil and Rory), no where to be found, thats hurt some of the casual viewer/excitement too.

I have not watched a lot but agree the coverage leaves something to be desired. Not sure if the course is contributing to this since I find it very hard to pick up the ball when the cameras transition from the tee box to the landing zone. Also very hard to tell where the fairways end and the greens start given the limited contrast in color of the turf. While they have done some nice graphics in trying to present the challenges posed by the course I am not sure they have done enough but then again I have not watched for extended periods of time.

True...as that has happened at past British Opens on ABC Coverage as well...as a normal dark green PGA course with clearly defined fairways and greens does help tv viewers pick up the ball better.

FOX does a good job with their shot tracker (NBC uses it too on occasion), as in some cases with this course, you can't even tell where the fairways are located on shots behind the tee.

Next year, FOX will get a historical course at Oakmont to show their wares better...but then in 2017, it moves again to a links course, Erin Hills in Wisconsin that might have some (not all) of the challenges of Chambers Bay.

Other future US Open sites:

2018 — Shinnecock Hills
2019 — Pebble Beach
2020 — Winged Foot
2021 — Torrey Pines

NOTE: I do think fan familiarity of courses also helps...which is one reason why the MASTERS is so popular...almost every viewer knows practically all of the Back 9 (for decades, CBS could only show the Back 9 holes), let alone all the yearly tournaments at Pebble Beach (and even those that get to play public courses like that. (Took trip to Monterrey, played Spanish Bay...amazing course...then next day, Pebble was closed for Pro AM practice...but had a friend show up at 5 AM anyway...and it turned out, starter allowed us to go on 1st off tee before Pro AM tee times...we tipped him nicely...and still is my #2 favorite day ever on a golf course....#1 is still Old Head in Kinsale, Ireland).

Tremendous leaderboard and the back story of Jason Day struggling big time with Vertigo will make this an exciting last day. Day's caddy said he almost had to quit 3 times yesterday. Also Speith seems to be the next big American golfing hero, DJ bombs the ball but has a questionable past as does Pat Reed who had faded yesterday. I don't know much about Grace but I will later today.

Grace has 5 wins in the last 3+ years on the Euro Tour. Has won on links style courses. Very steady straight hitter. He seems to be the type of player who may not shoot a 62 but won't shoot a 78 either.

Thanks Knightfan, I didnt have a chance to look up Grace's background. Very impressive. Lets see if DJ holds up under pressure.

Even Fox can't ruin a back nine with 4-5 guys in contention. Still absolutely dumbfounded that they only showed Rory's epic 72-footer for birdie on 13 just once. I was on the phone with my dad, chatting about the golf and I saw that putt and screamed. Turns out my dad had switched to a baseball game for a bit, so I told him to switch back, so he could see the replay and we talked some more and waited...and waited...and waited (at least 15 minutes went by) and no friggin' replay of one of the most amazing putts I had ever seen. Unconscionable production.

I'd kind of like to see DJ win, as he's come so close, but I'm thinking Spieth wins it, as I think he's just stronger mentally than the others.

DJ backing up to the pack. Spieth cooler than the other side of the pillow (ty Stuart Scott)

fox has improved since thursday, but these greens are really bad. snediker's putt just hit something and popped straight in the air! never seen anything like that.

I'm watching with the sound off. Fox is that bad. Did anybody say what happened on that putt- was it an unfixed spike or ball mark or just the imperfect greens. I too have never seen anything like that.

12 green @ChambersBayGolf is ugliest, bumpiest due to shade, moisture issues (it sits in a bowl) yet Spieth, Grace nearly hole 40-footers.

Yeah, that was unusual to say the least. The way these guys and caddies inspect the line I don't know how they didn't see whatever it was.

Closing holes, these guys feeling more pressure now than Chris Chritie's pants.

Can someone tell Buck it's poa annua not Poanna. HE keeps saying it as if trying to impress the audience and he's wrong. Course is a joke, announcers are a joke.

Is it any wonder why the US can't win the Ryder Cup. Come championship Sunday they are choke artists. The best golf today was played by the non-Americans. Ironically, a Yank can still win it, but not because he played inspired golf.

Before this weekend , Grace was more unknown than the 2 escapees from that NY prison.

Spieth was 2 shots back when I said this - he just has "it," moreso than the other guys - reminds me of how tough Tiger was, mentally, back in his prime. Although having said that DJ simply choked. Missed several short putts, but nothing worse than how he finished. Amazing drive and perfect 5-iron to 12 feet, but then he commits the cardinal sin on his eagle putt of running it 4 feet past the cup and proceeds to yank the comebacker to blow it. How the hell he does that is beyond me. At least ensure you 2-putt to force the playoff.

First, I agree that was a massive choke job from DJ. But he was a bit unlucky on his 2nd shit into 18 in that it didn't roll back beneath the hole. Any putt from where he had to putt from was going by 4 feet if it didn't hit the hole. Still, if you wanna be a major championship, you have to sink those putts in those circumstances.

. . . he commits the cardinal sin on his eagle putt of running it 4 feet past the cup . . . .

Made worse given that Day had just rolled his putt a similar distance passed, showing the run-out on the other side of the hole.

Choking is an interesting concept, easy to point to when it happens, and harder to be sure it really happened. Maybe DJ choked. But on 18 his first two shots were incredible. He absolutely pulverized a driver straight down the middle of the fairway about 360 yards, and then he ran a 5-iron from 245 right passed the hole to leave a 13-footer for eagle. Same guy, same pressure of losing the whole thing with one bad shot, and instead he hits shots that would be considered legendary if he had won. Then it came to the weakest part of his game: putting. He spent the right amount of time lining up the eagle putt, he didn't yip it, as he went at it, but he misread it. Not his game. And the birdie putt would've gone in if 1/4 inch to the right. A choke? Maybe. But it's the weakest part of his game, and he absolutely killed it on the last hole for the strongest part of his game.

It may be that he simply needs to improve his putting, which will reduce the number of errors he makes. Or it may be that his putting will never be strong enough to consistently carry him to victory in majors.

Spieth, on the other hand, is the best putter with the worst last name in the game.

I see that I'm in the minority by saying that I loved this course. It required ingenuity and nothing about it was boring. Actually, it was one of the few tournaments that I couldn't stop watching. I loved the flight tracker off the tee. I would have liked it if they could have put a chalk line around the greens to make them stand out. Also would have liked the flag and poles to stand out better. It was impossible to see where they were aiming. The interviews by Holly Sonders were a bit awkward because she never faced the camera...all we got were profiles...but it was a nice profile. My biggest gripe was the audio. There was too much background noise, most of it coming from the Goodyear blimp. Why in the world did they need a blimp when they could have covered it better with a few drones. I am predicting the demise of the blimp for covering golf!

Baba Booey to you all. (It never gets old in my book)
