Part three of Dan Kane's investigative series was released today by the N&O. Read the article at: http://www.newsobserver.com/news/special-reports/carolinas-blind-side/article102613232.html

Kane shows the UNC System Board of Governors and UNC-Chapel Hill Board of Trustees and the Educational Foundation (Ram's Club/UNC's Athletics Booster Organization) are one-in-the-same, as the members have rotating appointments in each organization.

All of them are directly tied to knowing about the scandal within the AFAM program and its ties to athletics, and all but one of them were actively working to either stop any investigation or shape the initial findings to show no connection between athletics and the academic scandal.

Burley Mitchell would have none of it. While Mitchell received his JD from UNC School of Law, he received his Bachelors degree from NC State. He was a former NC Supreme Court Justice, and also resided on the BOG.

Part three concludes as the Orange County DA is set to determine whether or not he will prosecute two AFAM staff for their involvement. That DA is, of course, Jim Woodall, who holds both an undergraduate degree and law degree from. . . UNC.

So you know, the state legislature appoints UNC System BOG members. The BOG appoints 8 of the 12 trustees comprising UNC's BOT, with the other four appointed by the Governor. Former Gov Jim Martin led what was to be the definitive investigation into the scandal.

Surprise: campaign contributions and ties to elected officials result in having an "inside track" to being chosen by the Governor for inclusion on the BOT.

Part 4 tomorrow. Kane is saving something special.
