Philip Nelson walking on at East Carolina.

Wish he walked on here. Another example of jumping to conclusions. Can't wait until Dailey news....

Will he have to sit out this year as well like Savage did or is he immediately eligible since he was dismissed before the 2014 football season?

"Jumping to conclusions"? He was arrested and convicted of assault. Don't be ridiculous, we had no choice but to toss him.
Yes, this Board jumped to conclusions. It always does when it comes to these type of cases because we have a habit of jumping on the first tweet and never paying attention to the actual details as they arise.

Hmm, let's see keeping a player on our roster with video evidence of an assault.....forget it never mind, only thing missing was an elevator....

Wish the kid luck - stupid, stupid mistake that could have landed him in jail for a very long time. Hope he learned his lesson-he's lucky to have the opportunity.

One split second drunken reaction and he goes from full ship (and likely starter) in the B1G to a walk-on at a group of 5 school. I wonder if he ever drinks another drop of alcohol in his life.

whether he's legally guilty or not doesn't matter, why the hell would Rutgers want that publicity of a player who gave someone brain damage in a fight. Do you think they should've kept Mike Rice as coach too?

He did kick the guy in the head when he was down. The fact that it did not cause the brain damage does not excuse it.
And somehow everyone in society has to take action against a kid who did something in the heat of the moment? Back in the day we didn't get fired from our jobs or kicked off of sports teams if we got in trouble with the law. Now virtually everyone feels they have to weigh in and demand someone lose everything if one of their transgressions, either real or alleged, comes to light. Our blood-in-the-water penchant is truly pathetic, absurd, and, even worse, heartless.

Allowing a kid to play football doesn't excuse an action, it merely allows him to play football.

yea, Can't imagine why a program that constantly talks about FAMILY would give a guy a second chance after the legal process played out.

Not one person mentioned Nelson was sucker punched first. What normal person doesn't fly into all out rage when violated? I'm not excusing his actions, but I understand his reaction. Bottom line, as we experience things in life we make better decisions and that usual come with age and miss steps. Btw, we as a society preach second changes, but seldom give people one. What does that make us?

I thought the same thing. If I recall correctly didn't the kid who was put in a coma start the whole incident. Thought I remembered he threw the first punch from behind Nelson. I could be wrong but why was his actions never discussed.

Your original post that he should walk on here blames the coaches for not trying to bring him back here. The kid needs a fresh start, he's already put our school in a bad light, better for everyone to move on. You think they should take Dailey too, after armed robbery, good idea.

by that logic the Pats should keep Aaron Hernandez on the team until he's convicted of murder. Go embarrass your company in public and see if they keep you around while they wait for the legal process.
read much? legal process is over and that's when I asked if we offered him a second chance. will be upset when dailey comes back in the spring?

I dont think the discussion was about giving him a second chance, it was that he should not have been removed from the Rutgers team. Two different discussions.

who said he shouldn't have been removed?

Who cares is this even a topic of concern? Was this kid such a good QB that he would be winning the competition now? Doubt it look at this stats. Move on

Nelson isn't as innocent as some might think.
He was the one that started the whole mess and Rutgers did the right thing by dropping him.
>According to the transcript of a witness interview with police, an angered Nelson shoved Kolstad, a 2013 graduate of Minnesota State, Mankato, and a former football player for the university, after mistaking him for a bouncer who had kissed his girlfriend.
Kolstad knocked Nelson to the ground, but as he walked away, a third man punched Kolstad in the head. Surveillance video shows Kolstad dropping to the ground, his head smacking the pavement. Nelson then kicked Kolstad in the head. The fight lasted seconds.<

VKJ- it is one of the few times I disagree with you. I don't think he is a bad kid but being drunk is not an excuse and he is underage.
No different then drunk driving. Most people, when sober, say they would never do it. Then they get drunk and make a drunk/dumb decision to do so.
I am ok with him getting a second chance but certainly not here and being drunk is not an excuse.

I'm not making excuses for him, he f'd up and paid the consequences. By all accounts, he was a good kid and teammate and kid. If the courts are satisfied then so am I. Would you be against Dailey coming back once his case is settled?

If it was found that he was a willing participant- no...wrong place, wrong time, yes...Nelson was drunk and no one made him take that late kick to the head. by all other accounts, he is a great kid. HE made a huge mistake but it was not a case of his friend kicking the kid and he was blamed by association. I am all for both of them getting a second chance but I don't think we could get away with taking either back.

While I disliked the rush to judgement,.. You just don't kick a guy when he is down unles you mean to disble or kill him. I can see why getting hit from behind yourself might cause you to react quickly.. But not to kick a guy in the head. That should be reserved for kill or be kiled situations.

Good luck to Nelson.. Hopefully all involved in that event have learned something.
