Pike blew it

Maybe he had no money to get play that could help. That’s the problem with zero NIL dollars and a fanbase that ignores it.

Would you suggest HC Pike take a paycut then?
If NIL is of such importance to limit his abilities to construct a roster, should he really be collecting a Top 25/30 salary?

Sounds like it's NIL that's doing the heavy lifting.

Sorry, but a lot of good players, or helpful players do not get NIL packages. The amount of players that get NIL deals is overstated I believe. I could be wrong. Many avenues Pikiell can choose. Is he fully adjusting to new age?

You’re the anti fan. You can careless if the team wins or loses as long as you get to write up a 10 paragraph story with zero quotes from anyone that matters. You been a fan forever and sit in horrible seats because donate hell no not Me. NIL recruiting that’s all insignificant to you all you care about 3 hours of your life a couple days a week with a recap and then the rest of the time on the CE board. Favorite thanksgiving foods March of the wooden soldiers and twilight zone marathons LOL from a near 56 year old.
NIL NIL NIL! Rutgers will never be good unless we have more and more and more NIL.

So tired on the NIL nonsense.

NIL delivers talent and that’s it. NIL is not responsible for our players looking lost on the court. They’re more concerned about watching Ace or Dylan play. Bet they’ll get the NBA pass next season.

The issues playing out on the court have nothing to do with NIL.

We raised our floor getting Ace and Dylan and the team is literally at that floor.

No one knows what’s actually going on behind closed doors, or what the locker room is like, but what I do know is that we had a clean slate this year with two studs coming in. It’s been an utter failure, and it’s not an NIL issue.

Getting Ace and Dylan had nothing to do with Rutgers sponsored NIL. The lack of NIL has everything to do with the players that came to this team this year that were not on the team last year. All players that seem to not belong in the BIG. So NIL is so very important and we see it with the supporting cast except our Freshmen Center.

Completely missed the point.

Lack of effort on the boards isn’t an NIL issue. It’s a coaching issue. Full stop.

The guy even tried to gaslight the fanbase into thinking a portal 5 wasn’t necessary. Complete and utter nonsense.

He did it try to gaslight the fanbase. He was trying to think positively because he had NO money for a transfer C that can come here and make any difference.

Stop it. He got an Ivy League tweener as his “guy” because he dumped on us. Did the same with Fernandes.

Wait til we get that kid from Monmouth next year.

These are players he is picking. Martini would be on this team with or without NIL.

This fan base has been getting gaslit for like 4 years now. Its crazy.

I suspect that is exactly what he does. Does anyone know how much, if any, of available NIL $ went to Ace and Dylan?

If there is a pool of NIL $ and I am Pike I am spreading it over 7-8 guys that will be long players, who defend and can shoot but aren't necesarily the best athletes (realizing that you have to give up something).

May have to allocate a bit more than 20% of a budget for a shot blocking center
The huge money for Ace and Dylan didn't come from Rutgers NIL. They got money from elsewhere bc they are NBA superstars who would get paid no matter what college they chose

If you are a lower level player that lights it up against Rutgers its a guaranteed roster spot apparently

So was it NIL?

Others have said Lathan threatened to jump ship if he brought in another 5 - so which was it?

That was 100% reported here, but IIRC it was more of a “word on the street” thing rather than fact. So who knows.

If that’s actually true, then things are worse than I thought. I give Pike the benefit of the doubt on that situation though.

Either way, this isn’t a talent issue. I’m not going to call for the guys head or anything, this is his livelihood, but we are witnessing a poorly coached team.

At minimum, he’s a good coach and has had 2 straight years of a team not responding to his coaching.

For the amount that he is getting paid to be here, I think it’s completely fair to hold him accountable for this (no pun intended).

How much money do you think Mag is getting from BYU? I highly doubt he’s getting more than we’re giving Acuff. We didn’t target D and it had nothing to do with NIL. Pike second guessed himself and his strategy after last year’s disaster.

What makes you think HC Pike can evaluate players who can both defend and can shoot?

The "can only shoot" players can't shoot in our offense.
We don’t run an offense and NEVER get our shooters open looks. Pike is done!

This year has been one of the worst X and O performances by any coach on any level.

Pike's Contract--on the bright side, his buyout is only $5.5M if another team wants to steal Pikiell from Rutgers 😉 :

salary table, which remains unchanged except for the additional year:

April 1, 2023 through March 31, 2024: $3,250,000

April 1, 2024 through March 31, 2025: $3,500,000

April 1, 2025 through March 31, 2026: $3,750,000

April 1, 2026 through March 31, 2027: $3,850,000

April 1, 2027 through March 31, 2028: $3,950,000

April 1, 2028 through March 31, 2029: $4,050,000

April 1, 2029 through March 31, 2030: $4,150,000

April 1, 2030 through March 31, 2031: $4,250,000

The new contract also has adjusted the buyout fee should Pikiell choose to leave (one thing that remains the same: if athletics director Pat Hobbs leaves at any point, the buyout is reduced by half). Here is the new buyout table:

Termination by Head Coach between April 1, 2023 and March 31, 2024 - $15,000,000

Termination by Head Coach between April 1, 2024 and March 31, 2025 - $13,000,000

Termination by Head Coach between April 1, 2025 and March 31, 2026 - $11,000,000

Termination by Head Coach between April 1, 2026 and March 31, 2027 - $9,000,000

Termination by Head Coach between April 1, 2027 and March 31, 2028 - $7,000,000

Termination by Head Coach between April 1, 2028 and March 31, 2029 - $5,000,000

Termination by Head Coach between April 1, 2029 and March 31, 2030 - $3,000,000

Termination by Head Coach between April 1, 2030 and March 31, 2031 - $1,000,00

Right now I am reading Pike's contract, available on the internet.

How do you compute $5.5 million? This makes no sense.

First, half of $13 million is $6.5 million, not $5.5 million. How do you come up with $5.5 million? The $13 million number is on the internet, Pike's sixth contract amendment.

Second, Pike's contract states clearly, "the foregoing requirement shall be reduced by 50% if Patrick E. Hobbs' employment with the University terminates on a date that is effective with a date that is prior to March 31, 2024." Maybe this 50% reduction was written in amendments one through five and extended; I don't know.

Hobbs fired himself on August 16, 2024, This means the 50% reduction expired and does not apply anymore.

it’s different for every player. There are tons of avenues to explore to being in talent.

The lazy narrative is our fam base will not donate enough so we can’t compete. Which is false and ppl don’t understand how to leverage the various options effectively.

Beyond Nil is the awful roster choices, the even worse lineup and rotation choices. Finally the zero offense we run and consistently being out coached. All not NIL problems.

Do you honestly think Pikiell wouldn’t have brought in better talent if he had the funds?

You think he’s “gaslighting us”?

Cmon dude, be smarter.

Good luck if you think a 4k waiting list is real...same think with football back in the day.
We have 70+ straight sellouts and I have been begging for seats for 2 years with a big donation to back it up and I basically get laughed at. What else would you call that? They need to push the ticket prices and donation requirements higher.

First, Pikes is not going to leave mid season. That would be idiotic and out of character. Thought that would be understood. He ain't going to leave after this season either.

Second, I did not read the contract, and did not think it was tied to that date. Good catch by you. So, the original amounts are in place if Pikes leaves, which I doubt is happening.

Well the new renovated stadium would have helped you. Unfortunately that’s over!
The sad part is the majority of season ticket holders especially down low would rather us be mediocre and keep their ticket prices down then having a competent coach.

I think his talent evaluation is off in relation to a players game translating to the next level. That's just my opinion though.

As for the gaslighting thing, I specifically recall an interview (I believe with Breitman) where unprompted Pike brought up the 5 spot. Saying he hears the murmurs out there about the desire for a transfer there and that he's happy with his guys and we're going to be just fine blah blah blah.

It was an OBVIOUS issue by everyone that pays attention. It should have been priority #1 from the jump, and it clearly wasnt.

I can agree with your first point.

As to your gaslighting point…I think whatever he said was just coachspeak and a cover up for the lack NIL funds available for landing a top tier big man.

You can disagree with his talent evaluation but I don’t think he’s dumb enough to bring in someone like Martini over someone much more talented if he actually had the ability to do so.

You could maybe argue he didn’t push or work donors enough for more NIL - but I don’t think he’s gaslighting us lol.

He didn't even get another body though, he just left it with what it was.

Maybe that points to the Lathan rumor, or maybe it's something else, I don't know. But he really needed to get another body at minimum for that position, and he didn't. Didn't even need to be a big name or anything, just a big body with slight lateral quickness.

Instead we have EO who can't move laterally, and Lathan who is talented, but raw. Also I've posted this in the past, but Lathan is a 4, not a 5.

Lathan could play the 5 at Nova back in the day when they were loaded with talented guards. Can't play it here with this team. We effectively went into the season with 1 center who doesn't even play lmao.

Not true. I have 100 level seats for over 20 years and have gotten to know many in my section. We all want to win and it's frustrating consistently not making the NCAA Tourney. In addition, a majority of those holding 100 level seats donate far above the required seat fees.

I’m sure the demand for the 100’s is off the charts. Someone would know the exact number but I think there only like 1,500 seats in the 100’s. Some of those folks have had tickets for decades and they’re not moving unless there’s an overall ticket reassessment.

But there is no way our the actual waiting list is 4K after this season. Most of that 4K are folks who wanted to get in on tickets for this season to see Dylan and Ace.

Once they’re gone and we have a potential rough year next year that list will get decimated and evaporate before you know it.

We have a cheap and fickle fanbase aside from a few thousand die hards.

Basketball season tickets are a huge commitment time and money wise compared to football (15 + games, weeknights with some 6pm starts, cold/nasty weather in the middle of the winter).

We definitely won’t have thousands of people lining up to spend a couple thousand on tickets after this disappointing season and no lottery picks.

I applaud and thank you! I too do the same but I also watch those who sell their seats and buy 300 level seats on game day . My section may be different .

Not all of them are like that but I have met several who like bragging how long they have had the seats.

I have been on a 2 year waiting list for court side seats. Can't get them. Even harder to get 2 together. If we get them, RU gets 2 points better at home I will practically be playing defense in my chair.

Courtside not happening. Demand for seats will be gone once Ace and Dylan leave. So you will get seats next year.

That’s also because they’re too busy giving courtside freebies away to guys like Todd Frazier who I’m sure you donate more than.

But at least it looks like Todd did get bumped to back a few rows this year lol.
