Pike blew it

Says it all. Gotta go.
Being a worse offensive coach than Dana Altman isn’t exactly a damning rebuke. And there hasn’t been really notable attrition from Rutgers compared to similar programs.

I think ultimately it seems like Pikes’ best attributes as a coach don’t translate well to the era of one-year rosters and emphasis on the transfer portal, which is a shame

From Eugene Omoruyi in 2021:

“Just my feel for the game,” he said. “Me playing basketball the right way. Knowing the ins and outs of the game, having such a great coach as Coach (Dana) Altman. He’s taught me a lot of things about the game that I didn’t know when I was at Rutgers.”
Cam Spencer had similar sentiments.

Then that is on the fans. Couldn't help laughing to myself, Indiana goes out and gets a complete beast of a center from Arizona. Why? Because their fanbase cares and pours in donations. Rutgers fans have alligator arms a list of complaints that can top Mount Everest so we get the kid from Princeton as our 5.

Thats what you all get IMO.
sure blame the fans

I believe Young was the fifth or sixth man at Texas - far from unplayable.

Texas fans hated him and he was completely out of control here at the beginning of the 19-20 season. He was a walking (or running) turnover.

I do not think that Pike is generally a good offensive coach but Jacob Young specifically made huge improvements here and then went backwards at Oregon. He is probably the literal worst example to use to demonstrate Pike being a bad offensive coach.

Obviously I've been a huge Pike supporter and he turned the dumpsterfire around miraculously, but missing on this entire portal transfer class in a once in a lifetime opportunity this season is a bigtime fail. It is what it is at this point and is honestly a fireable offense if the season doesn't turn around

Rutgers needs a GM to help with the portal. Pike's hit rate simply is not high enough

Young was best at Rutgers easily

EO developed massively at Rutgers

Both greatly benefited under Pike

You said he was unplayable. All I said is that he was fifth or sixth man at Texas. Liked or not Texas did not see him as unplayable and they were better than us at the time. The main problem he had at RU was that he was tough to deal with.

As far as I can tell he played 14mpg his sophomore year at Texas and not very well. But yeah I mean unplayable is I guess an exaggeration. I’ll edit it to simply “bad”.

IIRC young had more turnovers per 100 and higher TOV% at Rutgers than at Texas or Oregon and his offensive out puts were close to identical in his last year at UT, 2 yr avg at RU, and one year at Oregon.

Great player

Mark Cuban poured a lot of money into Indiana NIL.

this all sucks because I really think Pike is a good man and would have loved for him to succeed but I really believe this program is in trouble in the NIL era. Schools reload every year with talented transfers while we pick up low major reaches. He’s not cut out for this era.
Same in football. We’re screwed.

He struggles with roster management for sure. That said if he indeed fails rutgers is in for another long cold winter. Basketball people know he can coach and if he fails Rutgers well deserved reputation as a graveyard will be back perhaps stronger than ever and it will be a miracle if we get someone that can actually get us back to decent.

This is such a loser mentality. @dpwhite was arguing this with me last week. If Pike gets fired after next year it will be 10 years of him being here. That is not a coaches graveyard.

We have a top 10 home court advantage in CBB to sell
Fertile recruiting grounds
We pay top 25 in the country in pay
P2 conference
NIL rev share that will beat most other conferences
Excellent practice facility

There is plenty to sell and I am confident we can land someone decent. You can't Vivian Stringer the program because we went to the dance and won a game 5 years ago when each year afterwards was downward progress.

I’m not saying that’s a reason not to make a change. I’m making a prediction based on watching college basketball closely for 50 years.

Just a couple note-
Will top ten home court still exist when prices are raised and RU fans run away refusing to pay?
Revenue share probably not as much help as you think. Football will get most. Many other schools may give more to hoops, and some don't have to share w football.

100% yes. nearly 4000 additional people want tickets. There is also a waiting list for court side.

The days need to end where people just donate the bare minimum for their seats but because they have had them 20 years they get to keep them.

What schools in the P2 are giving more to hoops? No one. The TV contract for the Big East sucks. Football drives the bus with TV and always will.
