Pike should model future teams

Pike's best teams at RU didn't defend or rebound at anywhere close to Houston's level.

similar to this Houston team. Wow what defense and rebounding. Looks like they have 5 Caleb McConnell out there
You’re missing the most important ingredient: Money

We could model future teams all we want. We could never put a team like that together. Whether it’s Houston or Florida.

Defensive stalwarts aren't that costly

Houston led the country in 3pt shooting % as a team.
Like #1 out of over 300 schools.

That doesn't happen by accident.
It's a deliberate part of their strategy and player analysis valuation.

We seem to do the opposite.

I agree because that is what pike does best….coach gritty defensive teams, but then we would have to hear how we can’t run an offense, which btw neither team last night ran an offense.

By contrast we were #237th in our "best Pike offense ever".

The realistic model is Bob Huggins Press Va teams. Those types of players are in budget.

So far I’m cautiously optimistic in that it looks like we’ll retain 3 players whose skill sets fit a pressing style (JMike, Dortch, Grant), Nwuli projects to be a very good fit for a D first system, and Buchanan looks quick for 6-7.

Waiting to see how the rest of the roster shapes up. We need to spend money on a proven SG who can defend. That and a post bruiser.

Defensive Stalwarts who play Center are costly. We also need a 2 guard who can shoot and defend. He will also be costly.

We don’t need a true center. Buchanan is a transition player. He fits the profile for a press style. Happy with the pick up.

Pikiel literally said he’s looking for a Center in an article this morning. We’ll see what we can get.

I’m sure we’re looking. We have 4-6 more spots to fill, and based on the Carino article, it’s unlikely Buchanan cost very much. According to Carino - the kid used his NIL to run a free camp for kids in need, fund a Thanksgiving food drive at homeless Shelter, and run a Secret Santa initiative for the poor….

i think it is funny everyone bashes pike on bad possessions. In the national championship, kelvin Sampson couldn't get his team a shot to close out the game.... awful

God I love watching Houston play.

And I would LOVE to get to watch the way they practice. From all accounts it's out of this world hard/intense but my question is how the hell you do that and keep guys healthy and also fresh for games. Sampson is a wizard...

Our program has mirrored Houston until last year. A healthy Myles we beat Houston. Our team 2 years ago played at a level for 2 months defensively that equaled any top defensive team in the last 15 years.

I keep saying keep the blueprint and don't deviate. Yes NIL will make it harder. People really don't want to believe how good we where before Mag went down. Was it smoke in mirror? Partly because we didn't have depth and we probably would have worn down even if Mag stayed healthy.

I think Houston is far better offensively and they are also a supped up version of us on defense. Which has more to do with the difference in the quality of overall player they can attract on offense. But I totally agree with trying to mirror your program after the way they do things. Because they are usually one of if not my favorite teams to watch.

I've been to multiple RU practices (not in the last few years because it's gotten to be a much harder ticket) and our practices are quite intense too. They'll run a 3 on 2/2 on 1 back for like three minutes. And get a TON of reps in. Everyone is FLYING around it's very fun to watch. I'm weird though I'd enjoy getting a practice plan and watching how teams prepare for a game just as much as watching the actual game. So when a coach like Sampson is just able to get his guys to play harder than everyone I'm so curious how he does it.

there is no model...are people going to wake up. its one year seasons, you cannot do a Pike build in one year and be successful and success is not going 10-10 and being a bubble team

i just rewatched the last 2 minute, that was just brutal for Houston. My god so many opportunities to just get a basket. That will haunt them for life

he also made his poor free throw shooters practice 150 attempts a day after practice

Agreed - but Sampson is one of the best in the business, they’ve recruited at an elite level for a while, they have a super supportive fanbase and a very engaged billionaire alum.

Rutgers fans hate Rutgers. Houston fans hate UT and A&M.

Retention would be a heck of a lot easier for Pike if he accomplished that next year. Not as easy as before, of course, but not impossible in a winning culture. It’s easier to raise money to retain players with established team success. Both through fans and local NIL deals.

Buchanan is actually not a bad start, as long as that’s all he is. We need to hit on a proven shooting guard and post player. then stock pile physical kids who can defend with the other 2-4 scholarships.

I think Pike should model his team after the Boston Celtics because they're really good. 🙄

if the players are successful they will go elsewhere for money..pretty simple..players want the highest bags...there will be outliers here or there...thinking you can follow a model with a handful of outliers will crush a program

Celtics are attempting 48 3s per game.
#1 in the NBA.
It wouldn't be a bad idea.
We were 207th with 22 attempts per game.

At least therecruiting pitch would be different:
"Take a little less money to come here but shoot the lights out. Green light all game. We want to lead the country in 3pt attempts. Come here and fire away."

When you have Jayson Tatum, a 6’8” 3 who shoots 40% you can do that.

I don’t agree. For mid-majors, yes. But not for Rutgers. If Pike finds a way to take us back to the NCAAs next year I think we’d end up keeping J Mike, Grant and Dortch assuming they are all a part of the success and not unhappy with their PT. Unfortunately - it’s a tall ask. Purdue has managed to retain their players as the develop.

Is Purdue paying market rate to retain them?

If someone offers Davis or Grant 50% more $$ - are they staying at Rutgers?
To be determined. Didn't work with Clif.
That's the point of "just need retention to succeed" many seem to leave out.

Centers are completely different. We were able to come up with enough money to keep Caleb. I think with most other positions we’d have more success.
