Politi: "Greg Schiano deserves a contract extension as Rutgers clears a major hurdle"

If you actually watched the games, the only game we weren't in in the 3Q if not 4Q was yesterday's defensive disappearing act.
Being competitive against OSU, and Mich to a point, doesn't make up for crapping the bed against the likes of MD and Iowa. Those two games weren't close from the start let alone the fourth quarter. Iowa doesn't overpower teams normally except for RU.

Let’s worry about next years rankings and schedule next year. It’s 2023, you don’t think Washington is gonna add an elite portal QB? You don’t think USC is going to reload? Michigan state is going to look like Oregon state east with the portal. Only wildcard is what happens with UCLA and Kelly.

Sure, there is a world of time between now and September. But none of those teams IMO is on the level tOSU/Michigan have been lately, nor even Cult who mostly just seems to have only losses to those two.

All I am saying is there is a big difference between going 6-6 versus the current schedule versus next year's, at least how it looks at the moment.

Jerry Carino's take (paywalled):

There is something wrong with Schiano’s defense – the team’s pride and joy – leaving Terrapin receivers uncovered both downfield and on screens. Maryland threw for 361 yards, and most of that came before the Terps sat on a huge lead.

There is something wrong with Rutgers’ quarterback missing open targets galore against the Big Ten’s ninth-ranked passing defense. Completing 13 of 34 passes for 165 yards is bad on its face. It's worse when you actually watched how errant many of the incompletions were.

There is something wrong with an empty stadium in the third quarter of Senior Day for a bowl-bound squad, fans understandably escaping the cold, and Maryland's players posing for postgame photos on the field as their small fan contingent saluted their seniors on visiting turf
.

As this four-hour dissection by Maryland reminded any reasonable observer, it’s an open question as to whether that corner will get turned.

Iowa we were down 6-0 at half. That is close, and against a top 15 team on the road.

IMO UMD was the only bad loss. And not WTF bad, just should not have ceded 42 points to a team like that.

Normally 6 zip is close, except for teams with zero signs of a functioning offense.

My point is that you could clearly see, other than yesterday, a team that had clearly begun to close the gap and make progress with the historic programs. Yesterday the defense took the day off and not sure if it was because they assumed the bowl was locked a la 07 or 11 or what, but I definitely understand being disappointed w that. I wasn't expecting to win the 3 prior games, though that we were in contention into the 3Q was definite progress.

The third point makes no sense to me. It was a cold day on a holiday weekend, Senior Day had already been marked, and the game was out of reach by the third quarter. I'll let others judge the credibility of the first two points, but making a crappy third point detracts from the others and makes it sound like this is someone with an axe to grind.

That's Jerry being Jerry. He has a tendency to rub it in when things go bad.

I was very surprised at the Iowa game. A loss okay but shutout 22-0 and giving up 400yds to Iowa’s offense, my goodness.

And I agree there was progress this season. I wasn't surprised in the least by yesterday's results, and said as much in the prediction thread. Regardless, I prefer to pump the breaks on the seasons accolades, and would suspect the players and coaches do as well given how we measure up against second tier teams in conference like Wisc and MD. The Iowa and MD games only confirmed just how far we still need to be a middle of the pack team. While I don't expect to reach the level of consistency of an Iowa, MD is a program we should be more than capable of competing with and yet still remain far behind.

Based on what are we supposed to be competitive with Maryland? Is it the $300M Football Facility that they have, that we don’t?

Sorry , but since that facility fully opened, we haven’t been competitive with them, and they’ve left us in the dust. It’s hard not to see a connection, especially with their significantly superior talent at the WR and QB positions.

So is it the their shiny new facility, or the superior athletes then? I think you answered the question moreso in your last sentence.

Who were they playing against. This ain’t a schiano defense it’s reality. What is WV’s record against Oklahoma? Texas? Now make believe the Big12 also had Michigan and Penn State in it.
I'm talking about WVU when they had an Innovative HC instead of a HC plodding along thinking he's going to win by grinding it out a la 1980.

Exactly, so when we get the QB and WR that make the difference of 2-3 games, then we give Schiano his extension.

The shiny new facility attracted superior athletes, similar to the impact when an expanded Hale Center in 2004 attracted Ray Rice, both McCourtys, Courtney Greene, and Glenn Lee for the 2005 recruiting class.

If we had hundreds of millions for facility or NIL, we will have better use with the NIL for better players.

It is possible. But it is improbable when you play 4 top 15 teams.

Again, who are the teams doing this with regularly? You can count them on one hand.
It's not possible when your ceiling is about 50. The results are in. The best team he beat was ranked 51, Northwestern. The next highest ranked team he played, Maryland, finished 40 and they more or less ran him off the field after Q1--at home. If NW and VT were not in some disarray, you have to wonder if he would've win those games and had another 4-win season. We know a better MSU would beat him. This was an easy year. His style of play is a dead end.

Actually, it seems to be more like $200 million and some of that went to a center for sports medicine. You may be counting the renovation of the basketball arena in coming to $200 million.

AND, their significant superior head coaching.

This whole business of extension is a fantasy thought up by our friend @rutgersal and Politi. Is the slightest indication that it is under consideration by the University, or that Schiano is trying to get one?? I doubt it.

And they were doing it against a crappy Big East. So he maybe played 1-2 ranked teams a year. Again, I hate how we play but I understand why we do it. The comparison is silly

You might want to listen to the latest pod with Hobbs on this network. They asked him about an extension and his response was that Greg will be here as long as he wants to. I think that is why some think an extension is forthcoming or atleast under consideration.

There’s no need to litigate the issue because the decision has already been made, imo.

Yep. Cued above.

Saying he can be here as long as he wants is not the same as saying he's going to get an extension now.

Of course, everyone is assuming that Schiano wants an extension. Schiano will be over 60 when his contract ends, and his NFL career means that he is set for life financially. And eight years is a long time to be a coach. Let's wait and see.

Look I’m a rich rod fan BUT he crushed it when he had the two studs. When he moved to the Big Ten he went 6-18 in conference and in the PAC he was 24-40. Not exactly HOF results
agree to a point however, you must take into consideration that for his style of play, he'd need to turn over the roster. Hell, we've got people here claiming after 4yrs this team is still not Greg's

objectively speaking of course

When you are blinded by Greg hatred, it's hard to see facts clearly.
or you could demonstrate a basic and fundamental understanding of the nuances to RR and Michigan. see above

oh and Greg still sucks for you cultists

Let’s face it, the real difference between RU and MD is the QB position. Tago set the B1G record for passing yards.

Pasqualoni’s departure from Syracuse had more to do with the New Ro guys coming to RU
Pasqualoni’s departure caused them to look around. They didn’t just say, “now that Paul’s gone I’m going to Rutgers”

They evaluated Rutgers. Thankfully what we showed them, was much nicer than what Syracuse had in place, at the time.

It's amazing that you know what went into the thought processes of these guys. What are today's lotto numbers?
