Politi: Rutgers just hired a pro-sports president, but it shouldn’t use LSU as its model

Thanks for posting.
Talks to the new AD hire in the future… we need a good one.

What a crap article . It took Stevie wonder 10 paragraphs to make his point .
He also doesn’t realize that Rutgers has sporting events on weekdays ! Jeez man

Politi didn’t really say much there other than relaying a conversation with Paul Feinbaum, of all people.
That's Dr Feinbaum to those who envy him and "Paul Freakin’ Finebaum "to those who adore him .
(What they do?
They smilin' in your face
All the time, they want to take your place)

Guess Politi's impressed that the new RU President was able to talk to a SEC shill ,while serving as President at a SEC school..
(
A few of your buddies, they sure look shady
The blades are long, clutched tight in their fist
Aimin' straight at your back and I don't think they'll miss)

I would give my left nut to have a fraction of LSU’s success

Three national championships for football in the last 25 years, multiple national championships in other sports, along with nationally ranked teams on a consistent basis with a rabbid fan base and the best nighttime atmosphere and all of college football, to go along with the best Homefield atmosphere in baseball and this guy saying we shouldn’t try to emulate that?

I’ve never had a problem with Piolti, but without even reading this article, he is way off base and moreover, a complete idiot for writing something so stupid

We should be striving to have as much success as humanly possible, to win as much as we can and to be Elite in everything we do

This is beyond shortsighted and the epitome of everything that’s wrong with New Jersey sports writers and the star ledger in general

The article doesn't say anything like that.

Basically, we hired a president from a school with great athletics but terrible academics.

We should continue to try and be like Michigan (great at both) and not LSU.

Similar to how we shouldn't try and be like Princeton either - only great academics and not athletics.

Agreed. Jay with a huge overreaction, IMO. We can be significantly better at athletics, but RU is simply not going to go as far as most $EC schools and I'm ok with that. I'd way rather be #41 in academics vs. #179, even if that means we might not be in the top 20 athletic programs - but we can strive to be like UM, WI, UCLA, WA, UVA, etc. that have found ways to be pretty damn good at both.

Princeton football, basketball, lacrosse and hockey teams have had a lot of success over the years.

We should try for both

With our academic reputation, there’s no way we’re gonna go in the shitter and become LSU type level

It’s shortsighted and narrow minded, and epitomizes the tunnel vision nature of the academic/athletics relationship Rutgers has with the state, and those that are powerful influencers here

Truly successful institutions have both academics and athletics going hand-in-hand, it’s not in either / or thing

If he wants to write an article, you write a positive one touting our athletic potential to go along with our outstanding academics, with a president who has been at the helm of an athletic powerhouse to see it through

We’re not going to go into the shitter with academics ever, it means too much appear in this part of the country and we’ve achieve way too much to go down significantly

What we can do is improve dramatically athletically, and not at the expense of academics

If he would’ve framed the article that way, I wouldn’t have had a problem with it, but per my initial thoughts, and after reading it, he is posing it as an either/or situation

As Nick said. He didn’t say otherwise.

It’s not a negative article. Not particularly informative but generally a positive tone. He’s saying this is great but Rutgers shouldn’t lose sight of its identity. Perhaps a one sentence Tweet could’ve gotten the message across without the need for a whole article. But of all the annoying articles to bash the guy for writing through the years, this one would be at the bottom of that list.

Part of my frustration is that he typically writes bullshit articles about us, and I felt that this was an opportunity to compare us to Michigan (in a positive light) rather than LSU (in a negative light)

E. G. Focus more on the athletics potential that we have, the immense talent in New Jersey and all the wealth here, as well as this potentially being the president to have us turn the corner and emulate Michigan, more than shitting on LSU’d academics, and somehow being afraid that we will fall down to that level due to us essentislly trading our morals for LSU’s type of athletic success

More of a missed the opportunity, from his standpoint to the general public, in my opinion

Agreed. More Politi at his usual, inspirational best:

Go RU!

Never know what to think of LSU.
I know General Sherman was a faculty member of early LSU (Louisiana State Seminary of Learning and Military Academy)
More recently I see football crowds chant songs about sex acts.
Seems pretty low class joint

Their fans have been on a 3 day bourbon bender by the time the game rolls around, so that may explain a bit.
