Great examples except, ummmmm, ohhhhhh, gee, all those schools already have the state's name in their university name, i.e., University of North Carolina, Texas Tech, University of Illinois, etc. We are RUTGERS UNIVERSITY.
Though I freely admit that I adamantly disagree with this style guide when it comes to the possessive form of Rutgers, so I recognize the irony in citing it as an authoritative source on the name of the institution.
What I can't understand is whether or not people think I and others are proposing a greater affinity with the name "New Jersey" as a substitute for Rutgers. To be clear, that is not the case at all, at least in my perspective. The two live alongside each other, never in place of -- and I'm not really sure how that objection relates to the examples that Dave put forth, because they have less to do with the names of the states in the end courts and much more to do with the silhouettes of the states at mid-court.
Rutgers will always be Rutgers, just as Princeton will always be Princeton. And the New Jersey turnpike will always be the the New Jersey turnpike.
The best of NJ will always be Rutgers and Princeton.
