Possibly the most in-depth profile of Ash I've read....(new)

Interesting:
"Ash had made a habit of calling Schiano often. They had even discussed the job before Ash got it. They spoke about what it was like when Schiano took over a dormant program in 2001, followed by an 11-year tenure in which he took one of the worst teams in college football to respectability. They discussed the upside and potholes, and Ash was buoyed by the fact that Schiano remains fond of his time at the school."

Great article indeed. A couple of things that stood out, some of which we knew, like how prepared he is to be a head coach.

-He really wanted the Rutgers job, not just any job, which we knew he was up for
-Schiano spoke highly about RU. That is good. Someday when the dust all settles, he will be standing at midfield getting an ovation. That's good for everyone
-Meyer tried to retain Ash, after getting offered the RU job. That is very significant. We will find out what type of HC Ash will be, but his former employer trying to retain him is very telling as to how much he is valued

Again, with "the binders". Can't wait to see those magic binders one day.

More mystical than Floods scribble paper.

Schiano did the same thing. Started when he was at Penn State as a GA, IIRC, taking meticulous notes about everything from water breaks to bowl trip guidelines, et al.

Yeah, why hasn't Politi, Duggan, or anybody at the S-L written this kind of article?

I think the answer is self-evident.

When they met again, this time in New Jersey, they were spotted at a restaurant, and a fan took a picture. Hobbs began to worry that his secrecy would be compromised and wondered if he needed to find an alternate exit from their meeting spot. As he was thinking, Ash kept pitching himself for the position, unbothered by the idea his candidacy would become public.
Ok -- which one of us has that pic?

Which one of you was lurking around the Subway?
But seriously I wonder what restaurant this was?

They ate at Murdock's restaurant.

Ash sounds and looks like the real deal. Let's hope he is. I agree, as do most of us on this board, that RU is a sleeping giant and can become an outstanding, if not elite, program. Ash looks like the guy who can make it happen.

Man that a real piece of journalism there. I am 100% sold on Ash. Sure hope it works out. He needs to become RU's Schembechler.

His challenge is not going to be recruiting in NJ, it's going to be recruiting and developing the players he gets.
