Post Mortem.... Near Speechless

Objectively they regressed tremendously? Based on what? Do you have something to back that up beyond the fact that they were on a good team and then a bad team?

I'm not sure I claimed those two would be "cornerstones" on D. I just said they were good enough to be contributors on a good defensive team.
Their defensive ratings year over year?
The teams defense rating year over year?
Do you believe watching they are better this year then last year defensively?

Thanks for reminding me. Coupled the game with a campus visit when my son was considering Fordham. Up until this season probably the most frustrating game I've watched. Peter Kiss was an embarrassment with his antics while stinking up the joint. Nick Honor torched us, but we got revenge vs. him the following year when he transferred to Clemson and we beat them in the tourney.

Probably second only to Kennesaw St. this year in the annals of "why are we playing here?".
Didn’t we play at umass a few years ago?

I have been a huge Pike supporter because there are reasons things happen game to game that make sense from a basketball perspective. I analyze it and then I either agree or disagree.
Last night had to be Pike’s worst game plan in 9 years. There is no way to defend it and some will say the players can be blamed equally , but that was not the case last night.
In what world would you allow Loyer and Smith to hit 7-8 uncontested 3’s with no one and the same zip code on almost all of Loyer ‘s threes. I can live with Kaufman Renn getting his 20 -25 down low because Lathan can only do so much. But anyone with a clue about beating Purdue and Pike knows how , would never let them shoot 3’s uncontested. It was so baffling that our guys were not guarded their guys closely.
"In what world would you allow Loyer and Smith to hit 7-8 uncontested 3’s with no one and the same zip code on almost all of Loyer ‘s threes."

Exactly! In what world do you not go down the bench to the walk-ons until you find someone willing to go all out and be in Loyer's and Smith's face. I get it that there is no McConnell on the team, but surely, there is a 30-40% McConnell on the team who could have made a difference.

I mean, by this logic both players have also gotten way, way better at offense.

Better? Not really. "Regressed tremendously"? Lol no.
Way way?

Really? there offense numbers year over year will be less then 5% change and that’s with 2 guys on the floor being doubled consistently leaving them wide open. They are taking open shots with no one paying any attention to them so it makes sense with the slight uptick in their offensive numbers.
Watch that come to a crashing halt next year when Ace and Dylan are gone and teams actually try and defend them as opposed to leaving them wide open like this year.

So not regressed tremendously on D??

For everyone’s knowledge what is Ru defensive ratings last year ? What are they this year? Curious since you objectively feel they have not regressed tremendously

I see 8th last year
Currently 267 th this year.

Looks and feels like a tremendous gap. But hey your “lol No”. Might be right

You are all over the place. By the logic where you just compare the team ratings than these players must have gotten way better at offense and way worse at defense. I don't agree with this logic on either side.

Obviously the team this year is way worse on defense than last year. Why you would attribute this to the 20% of minutes coming from players that were on both teams rather than the 80% of minutes coming from different players is beyond me.

Wake up. He has been skipping away game press conferences lately. And what does whether or not he has anything left to say have to do with anything? You just keep repeating the same nonsense and missing the narrative.
Agree with Flaxxo here. Anyone know what Reid said after the SB ? Or Mahomes ? Who cares what anyone has to say after a game ? Nobody should.

Our 3 point defense has not been good this year but last night I could not tell who was covering Loyer because no one did. At all. My question is why ? Then my next question after his first or second make , is why wasn’t it fixed. If Pike fixed that I truly believe this game is in doubt until late second half . We gave 18 threes last night for 54 points and Smith and Loyer had 45 of them.

Most games maybe Loyer gets 2 and Smith 3 so that is 15 points instead of 45 and the 30 point blowout is easily seen. Why wasn’t it taken away ? Pike needs to answer that question to this fan base. Either today or sometime

two reasons:
1) because the mentality of the almost all incoming players, portalers and frosh, is to shoot first and ask questions later. streetball. no interest in D, no heart. it's sickening to see the selfish play all year. Every Purdue player is a better passing, more team oriented player who makes others more effective. Not a single RU player does, and honestly JWill is the closest to being that but still isn't. Ace and Dylan are out there doing their own selfish, ball dominant, chuck-fest thing too.

2) high major athleticism and basketball IQ at key positions is totally lacking. As someone noted, let them all go elsewhere: Sommerville, Davis, Derkack, get lost. Even Grant and Dortch have no idea how to defend and rebound.

Agree with Flaxxo here. Anyone know what Reid said after the SB ? Or Mahomes ? Who cares what anyone has to say after a game ? Nobody should.
Not surprising. You two consistently miss the narrative. It's not about what they say. It's about being accountable and saying something. Not running and hiding

do you have a link to that...didnt see that...INFURIATING TO ME...Pike is being payed a shit ton of money. He has 2 NBA top 5 picks and they are 14-16 and giving up 85 points a night while spinning their wheels all year. He seems out of touch if he thinks the fans should be kissing his feet and his players feet for this terrible season
Prepare to be annoyed. The Oregon game was great except the last 5 minutes, apparently!

Yikes alot of platitudes and the 77th straight sellout thing is ridiculous

Its about winning but he's talking about so many other things that no longer matter

this...this..this....take some freakin accountabllity and hold your team accountable. Pike was seemingly on auto pilot all year letting the players run the team as if he was scared of the handlers coming down on him.
On my worst days this year, I've wondered about a scenario such as the line above : "letting the players run the team as if he was scared of the handlers coming down on him".

Could college basketball have become such a cesspool that a coach has to monitor closely what he says to the players in fear of offending some power brokers/ bag men / 'wiseguy' types? I have to admit I have never understood how Ace and, less so, Dylan even ended up at RU. I read some of the stories that the money bags for these two was not actually filled with RU NIL money at all. I don't profess to understand this...but, where DID the money come from???!!! Maybe, we don't want to know lol. Most likely my naivete is just amazing, but seasons like this make me crazy!! I need a conspiracy to blame all this on!!!!

Go RU!

Things are bad when you have fans arguing over press conferences. The reality is that Pike has no answers with regard to the press or with Xs and Os to fix what is on court. He also had no answers in the portal or in recent recruiting classes aside from the current freshman class This is why the program is in this position. Hearing him spew nonsense in a press conference is meaningless. You can’t give an explanation for Loyer and Smith hitting 7 threes apiece with little resistance and then getting pounded on the glass.

College basketball has been a cesspool for years. Well before NIL. Its just worse now given all the player empowerment trends that have come into play.

(1) 5th defensively is a season long metric. Williams only played an average of 10mpg across the whole season. Even JMike only played 22. I would not qualify that as "big minutes".

(2) It doesn't particularly surprise me that the same two guys can make up 16.1% of the total court time on the #5 team and also 20.3% of the total court time on the #135 team. There is a lot more to the team than those two guys.

(3) Even if it did surprise me, what is your point? It is objectively a thing that happened.

They played enough where if their D was a point blank problem in a vacuum, the team D wouldn’t have ranked 5th overall on the season.

Let’s put this another way - if frosh Lathan Somerville had absorbed 23 mpg of Cliff’s playing time, I can pretty much guarantee our team D ranking wouldn’t have finished better than all but 4 teams in D1. Nothing close to that.

You don’t think he realizes this is on him? You think by not acknowledging that he’s hiding? You want him to say “this is on me” another time ? Why do you need to hear that ?

The basketball public knows and he knows this is an epic failure. Nothing he would say changes that, so there’s no point in him saying it any more than you need a weatherman to tell you it’s warmer in summer.

Agree completely. There’s nothing more to say. It’s not like he’s made excuses. He’s taken the blame. There’s nothing else he can do except try to rebuild next year. We may not be good but my money is on our defense being much better.

Yes. I want him to stand up there and answer questions and be accountable. I have been clear on that. Why is that so confusing to you? It's not that complicated and it's been explained already. if you don't agree, fine, move on.

I am almost done as in ready to pass on season tickets. Of course they ram the decision a month away from now. This season was THE WORST for me among as everyone knows horrid seasons during Hill/Jordan. The realization that you can have top level recruits and still fail miserably hits hard. The fact that they are just one year stop overs puts everything into perspective over whether I get emotionally connnected to them. The idea of paying college players millions is nauseating to me. Its also a pipe dream at a school like Rutgers that they can compete with this. Being in the Big 10 for sports sounds great but a decade in, Rutgers really is no better in the 2 major sports and arguably worse in many others while bleeding money and now demanding that we pay for the rosters of the teams we root for. I said before that NIL was making me lose interest and we shall see but I am just hanging on by a thread now. Next season looks very bleak and the ridiculous Hobbs extension puts Pike here for 2-3 of spinning his wheels.
But you’re still here and fully aware of engaged . You are not going anywhere. You are a true fan to the end
Better question is should we get out of the BIG? The whole point of college sports shouldn’t be about rooting for media revenue

He’s accountable. It goes without saying. Water is wet. Summer is warm. The buck stops with him. He’s said that all season long. Silly to need to hear him say it again.

Everything has already been asked and answered. Who cares? It doesn’t change anything. Either he’s going to turn things around next year or he will be on the chopping block. It’s that simple. He knows it as well as the fans. There’s nothing more to say right now.

y'all really think he's not doing road post game press conferences because he's scared to face the music? he's afraid to to stand in a room full of media nerds and say "hand up this ones on me" and give BS answers that will allow him to get out of there?

he's doing it to protect his players. what good can come from sticking a microphone in a frosh's face right after they got destroyed by 30 or worse just hit a miracle three to beat you after you played a great game?

he's fully aware he's gonna take heat for not doing it and is doing it anyway...which is what being a leader of men sometimes requires.

season has been a nightmare is almost over but the character assassination of coaches and players is bush league...
Protect his (PAID) players...F that. This is legit the Pros now...own that shit and take accountability

The W-L record is the optics. His accountability is unquestioned. There’s nothing left for him to say.

Of all the things to be disappointed about, it’s bizarre that you would focus on the HC foregoing a few media questions following an embarrassing loss. Everyone knows the team is a horrendous disappointment. There’s no reason for him to repeat himself for the umpteenth time.

i get it...you're upset about how crappy the season has been...join the club

but i mean you see nba coaches stand up there and kill their players? or do they go way out of their way to protect them? coaches want as little to do with the media as possible. they also want to protect their players. even the few coaches that do say stuff will say it about the guys that a) they are all the way done with or b) the guys who they know that saying something will motivate them.

every once in a long while you get a real reaction from a coach. pike had one when he dropped those f bombs after the michigan game. yesterday he knew his team ran into a buzzsaw...and then they broke/gave up. it happens quite often actually...he felt best course of action was to keep them away from the media. obviously you and many others disagree...

The key narrative here is that you give a crap about what Pikiell has to say.

Do you also tune in to hear what NFL coaches say to Lisa Salters after games ? If Pike never once spoke after a game nobody alive would care except you. They don’t ever say anything worth hearing.
