Youth Lax question. Does/did your club offer helmets to rent for a season? If so, how much are/were they?

I’m on the board of a youth club in central Ohio and we are locked in a debate about purchasing helmets to rent and other matters related to liability/risk, maintenance costs (recertification isn’t free), access to the sport (its expensive especially for first time players).

Curious your perspective.

As a club team I would not purchase helmets. Have the parents sign waivers that their helmet has been reconditioned. I would also work with a local vendor to offer reconditioning.

At my high school we do that, and we also purchase helmets. Either way we are covered.

If you are going to purchase helmets that is a huge expense, plus reconditioning each year.

When my boys were still playing club we bought our own.

The club eventually did come up with their own design but you still had to buy it yourself as it was NOT part of the required uniform purchase.

Now that they are in HS the school requires them to buy their own and it is the player/family responsibility to take care of it.

Understood - our program is in a really mixed socio-economic area so cost is a big barrier. We don’t have the sport in our schools yet so we are just starting.

As a matter of fact...

We just had 60 helmets that were gifted to us 2 years ago when we started fail certification. We did not expect that all of the helmets would pass recertification as a legend number were quite old; however having all of them fail was a shock.

We are a recipient of the US lax first stick grant (20 helmets) but need 20 more to meet demand for the upcoming season. We have been comparison shopping with different vendors but it is a significant expense - hence the debate and the reason for my post. I know there are other youth lacrosse enthusiasts and club administrators here and wanted to know your historical perspective.

Perhaps in a few years when the program partners with our school district to offer the sport we can consider getting out of this business…

Well I have a ton of equipment (non helmets) that is brand new, or like new, that I am searching for a home for.
