Randy Edsall dumps New Jersey Recruit .

Uconn is FBS in name only. Most FCS schools would stomp them. Edsall did the kid a favor. The school is a dump and their fans are clueless wannabes.

We are one to talk, UConn was on par with Rutgers when we were good. In fact, Uconn went to a BCS game, we didn't. So let's not act like Uconn never beat us or give us good games. UConn probably would've beat us last year.

Needs based scholarship will cover a lot plus his grades should be good enough for some Academic scholarships as well. That should take care of most of it. I know that Princeton and Harvard cover full cost now as long as you are accepted. I am not sure if Cornell does the same or not.

sadly - a 3.9 does not distinguish you at top tier schools - and does not assure you of getting an academic scholarship - because of the additional GPA value that Advanced Placement classes and Honors classes provide - there are kids graduating High School with 4.5 - 4.6 GPA's ... and he is probably past the deadline for submission for many scholarship & for application at some schools.

Anyone who watched Edsall publicly throw his DBs under the bus after the Tim Brown catch has been rooting for his professional failure. Reading stories like this makes one hope he develops a chronic anal fissure problem.

This times 10 thousand. That moment made me forever hate that man.

Edsall is a goon but I don't have a huge problem with this. It's overly generous for a new coach to keep a kid he doesn't think fits in the plans just because.

It's like a kid decommitting after their coach leaves and a new one is brought in who they might not like.

It's a marriage on both sides.
It can also be a favor to the player to let him know now rather than him getting no playing time, transferring and having to sit out a year. The flip side to this is that another player may have gotten a phone call offering him a scholly.

If it was done up front than how it was reported to have happened, then I have no problem with it. Not honoring a scholarship as a new coach is the same as a player decommiting from a new coach after they are hired. Both are very well in their rights to do that.

But not honoring 3 days after saying it's safe is a typical Edsall move. While in the long run it's probably better for this kid, it doesn't look that way at the time.

Edsall and UConn deserve each other.

I hope people remember this next time there's a thread about why kids don't stick to their commitments and questioning their integrity, etc..

This is serious business, from both ends. We have no idea what goes on (most of us, anyway)...

what's really odd about this is that UConn and every other group of Five is now mathematically eliminated from the national championship race, so you'd think they might run their programs a bit differently than as if they're competing against Bama.

Don't know the whole story. Im sure the coaches used the meeting as a evaluation session. We don't know what was said regarding the scholarship. Most of the time these kids tell half truths to make themselves look better.

True, but we do know that he has a history of pulling crap like this MANY times before. So, given that, I am more inclined to believe the kid.

Uconn was never on par with us. After Schiano righted the ship from the Schea error in 2005 we went 6 - 3 against them. Ucon backed in to their BCS game with an 8 - 4 record after West Virginia got upset by Pitt. That Uconn performance in the Fiesta Bowl had a lot to do with the downfall of the Big East football conference.

It was the final nail in the coffin. The Power 5 was looking to downgrade the Big East after that game.

I think they were looking to do it for a while prior to that. That game just reinforced the negative perception. What made the old Big East great was the balance. Any team could beat any other in any given week. The rest of the CFB world took that to be a weakness.

yeah, cept for that season ending crapshow to win the BE outright... 1 Tim Brown game ending miracle from being 5-4 vs. them.

I know the family, and the kid is a class act.No doubt, the ugly side of the recruiting game. Here, a kid would tear up his ACL, and Greg would still honor his offer. When you read these stories, you realize Rutgers will take the high road, but it surely will be the long road.

I'm thinking about 2 alternatives

* Preferred walk-on at RU. He was never offered previously so the school isn't reneging on a scholie. If he works out give him a scholie in 2018.

* He was offered by Cornell. Go there and get a great education. I'm sure he could get need based financial aid. Question is would it be enough.

All a question of the family's finances
He seems to have the Ivy League pedigree. Play at Cornell....study Business...get rich.

There was also a last second gift from Tres Moses. The record is the record.

RU is 22-11 all time vs uconn. That sounds about right.

Hm. My initial thought was that it was a dick move. And it might be.

But the timing of the assistant coach visiting on the 12th followed three days later with pulling the kid's scholarship makes me wonder if something occurred in that visit that turned the coaching staff off to the kid.

Or it could just be that it was a dick move.

We are a billion times worse than the 2011 UConn team.

You're either a Ucon fan or you live in Connecticut and have a soft spot for them. Either way you're dead wrong.

WOW - this will be key chapter in the book "How to be a Classless Prick" by Randy Edsall

June of 2016 - Dickens committed to UConn
- all-state player - three-year starter - on state title team in 2015
- has a 3.9 grade-point average
- competes on the wrestling team and is actively involved in several charities,

January 1, 2017 - Sunday -[thumb2] - Edsall called on New Year’s Day to assure Dickens the school still wanted him and his scholarship was safe

January 12, 2017 - Thursday - [thumb2] - UConn linebackers coach Jon Wholley met with Dickens at Raritan to talk about signing day
and his upcoming visit to UConn on Jan. 20, - Dickens’ 18th birthday :cool2:.

January 15, 2017 - Sunday night. - - UConn coach Randy Edsall calls to tell Dickens the school no longer had a scholarship for him [poop].

A lousy way to treat people ... made even more lousy by the timing - and - all of what turned out to be false assurances that all was just fine

High School coaches remember this kind of crap - and when a kid chats with their HS coach about various schools - some of those coaches will be blunt about Colleges coaches who do things of this magnitude - they will say -" be very careful - because that guy has no integrity - will tell you one thing, make promises and do another - he does not keep his word - the guy is a coach who will NOT have your back - if you are totally head-over-heels about the school OK - check it out - but I have warned you, I would never send my son there - the Coach is a dirt bag and not worthy of your trust." words like that from your HS Coach have an impact .... and they also have an impact on other HS coaches who have observed the whole story!

I have no problem with a new staff evaluating recruits who have committed to the previous staff and decide that they may not want player A or B, because it can work the other way when a new is brought in and the committed player or players de-commit for obvious reasons. But what appears to have happen here is that Edsall mislead and lied to this young man and that is more than horrible, it is unethical in my opinion.

I have no ties to UConn. You're saying they should drop football and they are an FCS team. I'm just saying other teams say the same about us. We arent' that much better than UConn. They were ranked 114, we were ranked 123. How can you talk about Uconn losing to Oklahama 48-20 when we lost to Michigan 78-0. Talk about living in a glass house. We got worked by Illinois for christ sake.

Agree. It's tough for the kid but Edsall was hired to win FB games and if he feels this kid won't help him achieve that goal he has every right to cut bait.

You don't think Connie would not have suffered the same fate as us vs. OSU, PSU, Michigan and Washington if the schedules were reversed? UConn was getting housed at home by ECU.

Agree. It's tough for the kid but Edsall was hired to win FB games and and it is Edsell's prerogative to be just as classless and disingenuous as his dark little heart desires he has every right to cut bait.

Yes - he certainly has the right to cut bait -
- but the aspect that is ethically & morally offensive & that is proof positive of Edsall's total lack of integrity - is that right after Edsell took over - he & his new operation - reached out to this kid on two separate occasions (phone call January 1st & in person January 12th) to reassure the kid that he was wanted - that all was good & his scholarship was secure ... Then January 15th - "meh- we don't want you"

Yes, it is Edsell's prerogative to be just as classless and disingenuous as his dark little heart desires
- - and it is the prerogative of the rest of the world to view him with contempt.
If Edsell had ANY question about whether he wanted to hang on to this kid - he never should have made those firm reassuring contacts - hey, if Edsell was not sure - he should have said we are assessing everything - we appreciate your support & we will have things sorted out shortly -

We beat New Mexico last year who probably beats UCONN by 2 or 3 touchdowns. And we won that game because Grant played.

Not after two assurances to the kid. That then let a sure scholarship offer go that was filled instantly by another kid.

would feel really bad for the kid if URI didn't offer, but him not accepting that offer right away makes it harder for me to think he got totally shafted.
Edsall seems to have made a move only a scumbag would make, but the waiting to see if he gets a better offer than the one URI gave him makes it hard to feel like Dickens doesn't have a place to land.
I feel he got screwed by Edsall, but it looks like he still feels he has a chance for a better option than URI and is willing to wait for a better offer.

SERIOUSLY?
you're saying that because he did not instantly & impulsively commit to this 48 hour old offer without even visiting - it makes it harder for you to think he got totally shafted?
It is great that he may have a possible option - but it would be good if it was some sort of a match - if it actually was a place where he wanted to go - a kid with a 3.9 GPA and strong credentials does deserve to try to find a good match - not simply grab whatever becomes available.
.....just think of the number of options that got burned because Edsell & Co lied to him twice in the past two weeks.

Honest to God, until I read Politi's/Finebaum's take on this story, I had no idea Edsall was back at UConn.
That gave me a good laugh.
Yet another indication the college football season/postseason is too damn long.
