Reiber should be in rotation…

How its so hard to understand that minutes are needed to-not only stay-sharp but also develop is staggering. Reiber showed last year he could be of value. Keeping him sharp is a benefit to the team whether or not woolfork is or is not better. Pike is doing great- doesnt mean he doesnt occasionally misplay. There will be a game reiber is needed and best to be in synch which comes from being a part of the rotation.

He was in the rotation earlier but worked himself out with poor play. Let’s not act like he’s not had a chance all year.

And there will be games that RU will need minutes from him. However, if the fire in the belly is lacking that’s on Dean. Right now, he’s not showing he deserves minutes which is sad.

One never knows what goes on for these kids. Remember the Tom Savage story (girl got inside his head, distracted him at a crucial time)

It's not hard to understand.
Who are you benching for these minutes?

You can't just magically increase Dean and not remove someone else.
Mag? Woolf? Hyatt?

I would assume Dean isn't being impacted by Paul, Simpson, Cam and Caleb.

Someone as the be ar the end of the rotation.
Backcourt: Miller
Frontcourt: Dean

This question keeps being asked but not answered, from who are you taking the minutes?

The justification for Reiber getting minutes is solely based on expectations from last year, where he knocked down some 3s, set up by Mulcahy.

The other factors were Ralph Agee was really a 4, that faced the basket at San Jose State and was brought into play the 5, something he wasn't suited for. When that didn't work, Reiber played out of necessity.

The other factor were more than enough fans relying on recruiting rankings and never buying into how good Woolfolk was in HS. It was "we need a transfer big and should we redshirt Woolfork "???

If Woolfolk was ranked properly out of HS, the discussion would have started in the spring of 2022, on where Reiber and minutes would come from.

It's about expectations and recruiting rankings/perception.

I also think that if RU is somehow looking at Baye Ndongo, the 2023 PF from Colorado Prep or the JUCO big from Monroe College, that Reiber still has a chance to find minutes off the bench, even if Cliff stayed for his senior season..... but if Baye ndongo Lands at RU, all bets are off on Reiber......

With Cliff gone, if we can’t bring in a transfer big man worthy of starting, then Wolfork will be the man with Dean playing the same role he did last season. It’s highly doubtful Wolfork in year 2 will be as good as Cliff was last season. Reiber could be at his peak importance next season. Let him fight his way off the bench. He and we will be stronger for it next season.
Agree with this. Would like to see Jalen and Oskar transfer down, but keep Dean as insurance..

No one is being "benched", and portraying an expanded rotation as a benching is flat out misleading. Can just as easily be portrayed as keeping a better group of 4 and 5s. My take is having just more than a freshman as a 5 backup is unnnecessarily risky, especially when the player has shown an ability to add value in B10 play.

The desire to portray everything as an either or is a misdirection. Can we not agree that some matchups would favor Woolfolk, while there may be times that it is advantageous to pull the other big away from the hoop, which Reiber can do and Woolfolk as not shown? Is that really a debatable point?

To say nothing of a matchup when you may want to play both and sit Mag or Hyatt and "go big" to pound on an advantageous matchup(s).

To do either (which may be necessary) it would appear to keep all sharp-hence keep Reiber in the rotation to some degree. The simple comparison of one player vs another is just that, a simple but misleading analysis. We're going to need both Woolfolk and Reiber at some point or perhaps multiple points this year. Those who disagree with that premise are ones who are shoehorning the rotation issue into a very simple one vs one matchup, as if there were not other permutations.

Baye Ndongo should be top 100 maybe top 50
Really hoping they get that kid

So who is sitting for Rebier to get these minutes that he's not earned?

Cliff
Mag
Hyatt
Woolf

I find this we need to keep Dean sharp narrative nonsense because as a 3rd year player off the bench he should know how to do this to begin with. That's like saying the 3rd string QB needs snaps every game to be ready in case disaster strikes.

Dean is a fine 3rd string 5. If he wants to stay in that role, good for him. That helps Rutgers depth since he is a solid 3rd option. He does bring a different skillset as the best shooting big. Wolf has passed him and the bigs we have been in the mix for in recruiting will all likely pass him as well.

It's possible Cliff leaves and Dean is the 2nd option if whoever is brought in is either a bust or needs more time to adjust to college ball. That seems to be his ceiling for playing time though and it isn't the most likely scenario

If he wants to make a move for more playing time elsewhere, I'll wish him luck and thank him for his contributions. The THREEIBER run last year was a fun time for the fans

Didnt matter? Appears to have changed trajectory.
So you agree with Pike. He’s using Reiber perfectly. I know you’ve been touting for pages in this thread Reiber’s inbound-play defense as the reason that he should play more minutes, which of course is why you’re bringing it up now. So great. You and Pike agree.

Problem solved. Next.

Wow Very defensive. All of a handful of posts explaining rotation and skill set differences, some of which pike actually acted upon.

Why not just give the kid props on a good play and enjoy the current good feeling instead of trying to champion why reiber shouldnt get minutes-at least today anyway.

Didn't that just happen? You gave Reiber props for tipping the inbounds pass. Pike put him in that position. I sure liked it. I bet everyone did. You got what you wanted. Everybody's happy.

Nah man, they've got something to latch onto now & it will be used for the next two months on why Dean should be seeing more minutes.

But I agree it was a good play and a smart move by Pike. Though I'm not sure Edey could catch, turn and shoot in that limited time. Thought Purdue would go more for a lob and dunk at the basket with Edey.

Pike is using his bench more this year than last. '21-'22 all five of our starters averaged over 28.8 minutes per. Hyatt at 12.8 minutes per was our 6th man. This season (a little early as we are just entering B1G play) only two starters are averaging 28.8 minutes (McConnell and Cam). A little skewed by Paul's injury, but my point stands. Hyatt and Simpson are getting 25.4 and 21.8 minutes per off the bench thus far. Those minutes are almost double the minutes our 6th man received a year ago.

The best CBB teams are lucky if they can play eight (8) without a noticeable drop in performance. Right now it appears we go 7 deep with Wolf as the 8th getting a few minutes backing up an All-B1G Center.

We aren't playing 9 or 10 guys a night. I thought Pike showed a lot of faith in Reiber and Jalen inserting them for important minutes in a big game when we faced foul trouble towards the end of the first half. That's what you hope to get out of the guys deeper on your bench.

Mag wasn't getting many minutes a year ago and now is an important piece on what appears a pretty good team. Hopefully kids like Rieber and Miller keep grinding like Mawot a year ago and force their way in to the conversation as the year progresses.

We are blowing out cupcakes so you would have to adjust for that.

With the type of basketball we play having our team fresh in March is going to be a lot tougher than it would be for a team that relies on individual offensive plays.

I really want to see us bank some wins so it will be easier for Pike to play his bench more in both halves.

I'd love to see
Paul 30 Simpson 5 Miller 5
Spencer 30 Simpson 10
Caleb 30 Simpson 10
MagHyatt 40
Cliff 28 Wolf 12

Simpson is going to be a huge key to our postseason chances. He needs to be good/trusted enough to allow Paul and Caleb to get extended breathers in both halves.

Having Paul and Caleb on the bench for 2 media TOs per half would do wonders for them long term

I love the thought of Paul playing 20:00 thru 13:00 and 8:00 to 0:00. That 5 minutes on the bench is like 12-15 minutes real time.

Pike will use his strengths when he can. The tipped in bounds was a perfect example.

Do you want to win or make guys feel good that they participated.

This team is beyond just participating.

Wasn’t there a point where Cliff and Dean were in at the same time for a minute or two earler second half?

The speed of this team is way different than last year. Reiber seems about 1000 mph too slow to the tempo

BAC....going to eat crow here. So while I do believe that Wolf has somewhat passed Reiber. I was WRONG in assuming that Reibs would not have any kind of role. Tonight was EXACTLY the kind of night we can and we will need from Reiber. Just 3 minutes but involved in so many plays. The Simpson pass to him for a dunk, i guess that was a pick and roll? Huge play...I wonder what his plus for the night was.

there will be times Reiber gets the call especially if Pike thinks that Wolf might be exploited.

I believe the Reiber injury in the offseason
Set him back more than we know and he is becoming the player he can be at just the right time. That said I love Wolf and now we have 15 fouls to give at the 5 more important more pieces to play matchup, more fresh players for the style of defense we play. If we make a tournament run we will need wolf Reiber and Cliff. Reiber is getting close to hitting those 3’s again
