Rettig transferring

I think Laviano leaves also.No real info, just based on gameday observations.

Expecting Dare and Laviano to be next --- no particular order. Both may succeed at QB in another system, but this one may not fit their skillset.

I think CL is better suited for FCS so if he goes it should be to that level.
I agree, I think the speed of the game was too much for him re: the Big Ten DL's being able to rush the backfield, and his strong suit was never throwing off his back foot or being able to escape pressure real well. But we saw that he good make some throws when he HAD TIME, which with this OL this year unfortunately never seemed to happen for any of the QBs. I think at the FCS level he could be a real good QB.

So here's a question I have - why do kids who are likely not going to the NFL transfer in their final year of college for football purposes instead of just sticking it out and getting their degree? Are they doing it for the possibility of having an amazing final year and getting NFL consideration? Serious question.
Love of (playing) the game.

Class act and best wishes. Thankfully we may never hear the most wrong assessment ever--that multiple staffs assessed him unworthy. That credits Flood's qb assessment and Ash in year one. None of which is worth the time to even type it. And rs freshman year is irrelevant.

Would be fun to see him at wsu (not sure if this is falks last year)

Who is doing that? Nobody as far as I can tell.

Hayden was an exemplary teammate and a great sport through a tough couple of years. Good luck, and fly high, Hayden:

Will be interesting to see where he goes.
He has been an Academic All-B1G so it would seem that from the academic side his options should be pretty wide open - and just needs to find a program that has a need & will give him a priority shot at taking the QB spot.
Hard to envision him turning into a real viable pro prospect - but if he went to a good school with a somewhat less intense level of competition - a place where his natural skills give him a real advantage - he could have fun , win some games, get a leg up on grad school work - and get networked into being set for a great career

My bet is he ends up in the college coaching ranks and does a bang-up job.

Gotta read the article: "He will be an immediately eligible postgraduate with one year remaining once the fall term is completed."

Also, liked the opening line: "Hayden Rettig's career as a Rutgers quarterback now officially can be filed under the category of "We'll never know."

I'm still pissed at Flood for not giving him a shot last year. Thought they were about equal in the opening game and when CL went south a few games in, could never, for the life of me, figure out why he didn't get more than mop up duty. Hard to say they look even, preseason, and then not go to him when the guy you have starting craps the bed. Good luck to HR...
Hard to say about equal, CL had Carroo, and opportunity not afforded Hayden. I have have talked with
him a few times, great kid, I mean a pleasure to know.

Good to see he got his degree.

He had every opportunity to win the job. He just didn't get it done at LSU and here.

The same can be said for us who wanted Nova benched after his multiple pick games. The coaches saw enough of Laviano in practice to know. We the fans, found out the hard way. Laviano was a MASSIVE drop off from Nova.
Sorry can't agree,

The answer to your last question in 'yes' - Tom Savage is a great example.

Good luck Hayden, he always carried himself like a true teammate, and never complained. I wish he was given more opportunity under flood.

Good luck to him. Similar to Dodd, still scratching my head as to why he could not have gotten more playing time. Could we have done any worse?!?

Where is Tom now what team?

Tom Savage is the back up QB for the Houston Texans.

Actually, I would like to see Hayden contact Pitt.

Pitt will be starting a new (to be determined) QB next year and have a lot of success with QB transfers.

As mentioned Tom Savage from Rutgers and current QB Nate Peterman from Tennessee.

Does anyone know if he mentioned any schools of late.

Would be ironic if Hayden actually matriculated to Pitt for his final year and did a great job under the tutelage of our OC Matt Canada.

HAIL TO PITT!!!!

Best of luck to him. He got the short end of the stick here in terms of opportunities to show his stuff in live games, and kept a good head about it and never pouted like some others in the past did during similar situations. When Flood was here, there was really no reason why he didn't have more shots to take the job, especially since Laviano was so sub-par.

Proud to call him a fellow alum!

Agree with all of the sentiments here. Hopefully Hayden gets a chance to start somewhere next year, and we can finally see what he can do! Seems like a great kid and teammate.

Our mantra is he couldn't play under three different head coaches, can't remember the plays and can't get people lined up…how's he going to help PITT?

Yes, that's what we heard far too many times.

Of all the QBs on the current roster, with his arm, Rettig is most likely to be on a NFL roster. No, I'm not saying it is likely he will make the NFL, I'm just observing he is the only QB that it is even remotely possible for that to happen.

If that admittedly very low odds but happy event happened for Rettig, there are some on this board who will insist that not playing him was still the right decsion because developing Mehringer and his schemes was more important than winning.

Here's why.

Flood was mental.

Flood came in wanting to distance himself from Schiano's shadow. So he immediately went OPPOSITE of Schiano in handling the QB position. No dog house.. no QB roulette. He did that with Nova and we suffered for 3 years until he finally had a decent season. Flood took a lot of grief for that.. so, when seeing the same issues with his next chosen QB.. he decided to double-down. If he does something differently with Laviano.. that would mean his critics may have been correct regarding Nova.

So, because of Flood's mental state, the offense suffers for years.. recruits get gun-shy.. there is no true competition at QB.. and we now see the big hole, out of which Ash must dig us.

Maybe that was Rutgers problem for not recognizing his potential.

Hayden Rettig was a Rivals 4-star recruit who was the No 9 Nationally Ranked Pro Style QB with a strong arm.

As Rutgers continued to struggle at QB, it always surprised me that he wasn't given more of an opportunity to be the Rutgers QB under the Flood HC administration.

When ASH became the HC, the new OC was more interested in putting in a "system" rather than adapting to the type of players that were currently at Rutgers (4 Senior OL protecting a pro style QB), so I suspected that he would not be your QB this year.

If he came to Pitt (not saying it would happen) he would be given the opportunity to compete.

Pitt had an experienced QB (Chad Voytik) who everyone (including myself) thought would be the QB going forward. However Nate Peterman came to Pitt (Tennessee Rivals 4-star transfer) and was given the opportunity to compete.

Nate Peterman became the starting QB.

Same story goes with Tom Savage who transferred to Pitt was given the opportunity to compete and was able to win the starting QB job.

Not saying he Hayden would win the starting QB job but would be given the opportunity to compete.

Seems like a good kid.

HAIL TO PITT!!!!
