Richie Lewis In U-23 World Championships - WINS Championship GOLD MEDAL 70kg

Here's how Lewis won his world title.

70kg Gold: Richie Lewis (USA) vs Vinod Kumar (IND)
1st period - Kumar won three matches to make the finals: 3-0 over Georgia, 5-2 over Ukraine and 2-1 over Japan. He was India's rep at the Asian championships this year after winning silver there last year. Like Lewis though, this is his first appearance on the world stage.

Lewis comes out in a blue singlet with a leg sleeve over his left knee. Easy to tell Lewis wants to keep space and shoot while Vinod wants to tie up with underhooks and slow it down. Ref gives Lewis a stern finger wagging, but nothing more after some contact. Kumar looks very strong and tough to break through his arms for first line of defense. Lewis on the clock at 1:37. Kumar takes the 1-0 lead, though Lewis did shoot, just fought off well. Still looking for angles and once again Kumar clears a Lewis shot. The period ends that way, with Kumar executing the same gameplan he used to get here.

2nd period - Vinod keeping Lewis' butt facing the out of bounds and once again ref calling for action blue. Restart at 3:34 and Lewis is on the clock again after clearing a Kumar underhook. Chasing tail and there it is! Lewis finishes the single and is working a tight gut, but can't score. 2-1 at the 4:02 mark. Getting to the final minute as Lewis tries to work a front head and dig underhooks of his own. At the 5:12, Lewis takes a 3-1 lead after giving Kumar his leg, then re-countering and running him out of bounds. Lewis fights out of the zone, fights off an arm throw and that'll do it! Richie Lewis is the U23 WORLD CHAMPION at 70kg, bringing the gold medal home to New Jersey and Rutgers.

I don't know what is more amazing:
RL winning U23 Gold
or
Someone listening to Trippie Redd

Lewis Claims Gold at U23 World Freestyle Championships

The 70kg gold medal capped an impressive championships run for Lewis, who was competing in his first international tournament of his career and finished U23's a perfect 5-0. The redshirt senior advanced to the championship bout after he defeated Zulfikar Makhamatov (Kazakhstan) by decision, 7-2. Trailing 2-1 to Makhamatov midway through the second and final period of the semifinal match, Lewis registered a takedown and added four additional points for the final 7-2 advantage.

TOMS RIVER’S RICHIE LEWIS WINS U23 FREESTYLE WORLD WRESTLING CHAMPIONSHIP

Richie Lewis exudes confidence, believing he has the skill set to beat anyone on the planet. On Sunday he did exactly that.

Lewis, a current redshirt senior for Rutgers University and a Toms River East graduate, defeated India’s Kumar Vinod, 3-1, to capture the 70kg freestyle gold medal at the U23 Freestyle World Championships in Bydgoszcz, Poland.

Pre-match song that Lewis said he listened to before winning:

Richie Lewis Won World Gold By Being 'Limitless'

New Jersey's Richie Lewis won freestyle gold at the 2017 UWW U23 championship, the only champ for the USA in any style at inaugural event in Bydgoszcz, Poland.

After his title winning match, the man who signs his name 'R.L. Savage' discusses his love of high level competition, and why he was able to level up by being 'limitless'.

Great job!

Will he be wrestling for RU now that the tournament is over? Perhaps the NCAA championship will be next? Then on to the Olympics!

He still won't be NCAA champ, but this is a great accomplishment.

What would you rather have? A World Championship or a NCAA Title?
Lewis established that on any given night, he can compete at the highest level.
He will not be a favorite for the title, but he has to be in the conversation.

PS: I would rather be called a World Champion, but i think that depends on the individual,

He may not win the NCAAs but he just had a heck of a ride. Kudos to him. At least Mr Nolf will take him seriously.

Based on the U23 world team trials field, it appears that most guys are focused on folk style national championships. If the trials had happened in April, the US trials field would have been much tougher.

Absolutely, which I congratulated him for in message 41.

And, it doesn't matter who is across the mat from him, Jason Nolf takes everyone seriously.

How big of a win is this?? Can someone put some perspective on this for me as I only follow hs and college wrestling

In terms of pure, Olympic wrestling, this is huge. Now, a completely different animal compared to the senior level, as this was only 23 and under, but this sets Richie up very well moving forward.

Another perspective of this, granted a different style of wrestling, but, two-time National Champion Isaiah Martinez lost twice this weekend and placed fifth.

I read the question last night and wanted to give it some thought before answering it. I agree with IsItLuck and will add my $0.02.

Hopefully it will bring more attention to Rutgers Wrestling, and Richie Lewis. If you follow twitter and a lot of wrestling people it absolutely brought more attention to Richie. Everyone in the wrestling community is talking about this. Speaking for myself I made a donation yesterday to SKWC because of this (I am sure I am not the only one).

As for college wrestling, it brings more attention to Richie but doesn't change anything. Going into the Iowa match he was an underdog against Kemerer before wining a World Championship and he is the underdog against Kemerer after winning the Championship. Do I think it gives him more confidence yes absolutely it will. It was scary how good Kemerer looked against BJ Clagon the other day.

As a RU fan I just hope he has no problem making 157, because I think he can do some damage at the weight. I won't predict a NCAA championship but I can see a top 4 for him.

Remember when I said Lewis would be an NCAA champ this year and I got skewered. Sorry, as I should have said Wirld Champ!
i would say j nolf will have something to say about that...on the other hand rich looks like he's in beast mode...mighty impressed considering lack of freestyle experience. quite amazing when you think about it...he beat some biggies to get to poland.then beat some of the worlds best under23 freestyle wrestlers...simply incredible.

I think it's essential for Lewis to beat Kemerer, both on an individual and team level. Seeding will be critical come tournament time, as you don't want to be in Nolf's bracket if you want to get to the final. On a team level, Lewis's match against Kemerer could swing the dual.

I agree Matter in that could decide the match and provide the momentum for a victory.

I think freestyle may actually fit Lewis's skill set the best... If Lewis seriously wants to contend for an NCAA championship... His mat wrestling will have to improve...alot... He has shown to be really nasty on his feet... But he needs to be able to ride and score from top against quality wrestlers come March... Next Friday will be a very good barometer of where he stands in regards to NCAA...

Outside of the US, no one cares about folk style, but that's what we do here. RL may not win the NCAA, but he probably has a better shot at winning the gold in the Olympics than any 157lb-er in college now.

I think the NJ State finals, Pa finals, as well as the NCAA finals all draw more than the Olympics and World Championships, lol. Maybe I'm wrong.

Here is Burroughs from Paris this year:

Look like a pretty good crowd.

Also, here is a recap of U.S. v. Iran, in Iran, this year for the Freestyle World Cup.

A lot of the rest of the world takes wrestling pretty seriously.
