RIP B1G

End of game is as much on coaching strategy as on the kicker. With 2 timeouts, even a QB draw could have been in the mix. They needed to get at least 10-15 yards closer. Kicker is a college kid, not a pro like Carlson or Tucker. With a 35 yard field goal, most likely kid doesn’t press as much. Plus the way Stroud was scrambling, they could have put kick into extra point range..

That's what I thought.

As to Utah PSU, I'll be rooting for Utah because I like underdog stories. I was rooting for TCU yesterday for the same reason. Utah gave OSU all they could handle last year but fell short so it would be a nice story for them to come back and get a win this year.

I half heartedly rooted for UM because B1G
I rooted for tOSU because B1G
I will root loudly for Utah because I will never, ever, EVER root for psu

(And, yes, clearly @Knight Shift was being sarcastic with the OP)

I don’t get the argument that last night’s games were some kind of embarrassment for the B1G. It must be people outside the B1G resentful of their revenue/coverage or fans from other teams inside the conference that hate OSU and Michigan.

Michigan lost a game they were favored in where they didn’t play well but still had the ball at the end with a chance to win despite handing TCU 14 points on pick sixes.

OSU played very well against a team that was expected to beat them soundly, and missed a tough but makeable FG to win at the end of the game.

Neither of those games were the usual playoff semifinal blowouts like when ND is there, and anyone watching them without bias would recognize we weren’t that far from one or both B1G teams making the final.
Don’t think it was an embarrassment but you know those SEC boys are gonna give it to the Big 10 about being the best conference, no argument from me.

Pitt field goal kicker had to make 5 field goals to beat UCLA.

Ohio State needs to get a good field goal kicker.

I thought Ohio State only gets Rival 5/4 Star recruits.

What happened.

HAIL TO PITT!!!!
Calm down. Beating UCLA in a meaningless bowl is wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy different than winning a CFP game on national TV to get to the NC game.

Yes, it was sarcasm, except the part about returning to the American, where RU would have a fighting chance to make the CFP. 😜
I hate Michigan fans (generally), and I was happy for TCU to win.
tOSU/Georgia was more difficult. Was rooting for a giant sinkhole to win. Others have made the point of more $$$ and prestige for conference members if B1G teams won, but not sure on how those extra $$$ and prestige trickling down to RU would meaningfully help RU.

No doubt TCU knew certain run plays were coming - I think they just said on BTN that TCU had 13 TFLs which is crazy. I thought the biggest difference in the game - other than the 2 pick sixes and the blown TD call for Roman Wilson - was TCU blitzing was more effective than Michigan’s. TCU outschemed Michigan on defense. That’s good coaching
I think that might be a case of Michigan's scout team not being able to run that 335 like TCU does it. Michigan probably killed the scout 335 and were shocked when gametime came and the plan did not work. Big Ten teams, in football and basketball, are configured and trained to win the Big Ten. I think it hurts a bit come bowl season and March Madness time.

Utah is a very good team. State Penn will have their hands full. Should be a good game.

GO RU

I feel bad for the kid. He is pretty accurate but doesn’t appear to have a big leg (the 48 yarder he made earlier didn’t clear the crossbar by that much).

OSU did a poor job of making that an easier FG. What would have been a 47 yarder at 23 seconds and 2 timeouts they turned into a 49 yarder and ended the game with a timeout in their pocket. Why just drop Stroud straight back on 2nd and 3rd down when Georgia’s pass rush had been getting better, but Stroud had been successful scrambling and running and you had a timeout to stop the clock?
I heard OSU kicked it as the clock hit midnight so maybe it was a time force continuim thing as the ball traveled from 2022 to 2023 hence the wild miss

Agree on hating UM fans. Actually found them to be more horrible than psu fans this year

$$$ trickling down always helps, because , $$$. Prestige, well, when we lose to them we can always fall back on "we lost to the national championship team & the team they played"

That last part loses luster when we get absolutely annihilated by those teams and teams like Minnesota and Maryland. Casts a pall over the "positives."

That's good stuff. And Georgia being hurt every down so they could rest before teh next pass rush or bring in fresh players... lame.. but it worked. Maybe they need to have the ability to ADD 10 seconds tot eh clock if the defense gets "hurt" and gets a free timeout.

Michigan gave away 21 points on TO's. Disappointing Loss......Yes.....

OSU almost had a huge upset....How is that a disaster to BIG.

But Utah is the favorite. You can stick to the scrip and just say you hate PSU, don’t think that would upset the board.
I'm probably a unicorn on this board, I don't really care about PSU one way or the other or any other team for that matter. The underdog thing is less about the spread or CFP ranking and more about program status, "blue bloodedness" etc...Utah isn't on PSU level on those kind of things just like TCU wasn't like Michigan. I root for these teams like Utah, Oregon State, WF, Duke, TCU etc..to outperform their status on the totem pole because I see RU in them and what is possible.

As a collective unit, the Utah defense was the best I saw this year
They have playmakers vs just good players

So 2022 for two pro sports teams in the same city (Philiadelphia Phillies and Philadelphia Union) to lose championships on the same day a few hours apart and two teams and rivals in the same conference to blow their chance on the same day a few hours apart to play in the CFB championship and have one more rivalry game

And that field goal kick going left of the post at the stroke of New Years midnight....

Also, what on earth was OSU calling in the final two plays? You get into FG range, then go for two passing plays while you still had a time out? The first was almost picked, and the second had a coverage breakdown that could have led to a sack outside of FG range. Yes, the run on 1st down loss a yard - but I don't see how you don't try to keep it on the ground for at least one more play before kicking.

What happened was Ohio State played in the CFB playoff…. Something Pitt wouldn’t know the first thing about.

Worry about becoming the best program in your own state before talking about national powers… 👍

I thought both Michigan and OSU were very deserving of being in the CFP playoff. Both teams played well and represented the B1G well.
Once again, kinda unusual for 2 teams from the same conference to be in the playoff, and I know how vehemently y’all protested when the SEC did it. Sometimes 2 of the top 4 teams are from the same conference. It can, and does happen.
OSU should have won last night, they outplayed Georgia all night. Michigan just ran into a buzz saw in TCU. Woulda, coulda, shoulda can be said about all 4 teams.
At least both games were competitive and fun to watch. No blowouts.

The reversal of targeting call was the difference. Look like there was no evidence to overturn the call on the field. He clearly went in head first.

Funny the rest of the world probably feels the same about UM.
Found this on Facebook. Don't know the person, who was born, raised and lives in NJ. Did not go to college or UofM and the person is a huge UofM fan. I know several people like this:

"I am a Michigan fan and always will be but congratulations to TCU they were the team that deserved to win today! Michigans entire organization needs to take a hard look in the mirror starting with the coaching staff! Those boys were not prepared to play and the play calling was horrible. The players need to take responsibility as well no one came to play they were soft no one wanted to hit no one stepped up and wanted to win very sad! Congratulations to TCU there coaching staff and players did there job!"

I can’t stand when teams playing with desperation manage to get downfield to theoretical “field goal range” (but which is actually a pretty long field goal), then, due to fear of a mistake, change strategy from what got them there and miss an opportunity to get into easy field goal range.

It still bothers me that Rutgers did it at the end of regulation in the 2006 WVU game, and OSU did the same thing tonight.
Not to mention the OT loss to Michigan in 2020.
