Roster - final spot?

He asked to name 2 players from Rutgers who red shirted not due to academics or injuries.

To respond to your response to another poster:

Many on this board thought Bullock was going to transfer. A head coach doesn't usually talk about his players transferring until they do. A kids high school coach usually doesn't mention him transferring. This is usually always done behind the scenes. You're on the boards all the time, why do you not acknowledge the fact many here think Bullock was brought aboard to help with Reid and build a relationship with Roselle Catholic.

Opinions are not facts......you can't pawn off comments like, "many on this board thought Bullock was going to transfer" or " acknowledge the fact many here think Bullock was brought aboard to help with Reid" as facts. Those are Opinions.....and should never be confused with facts. You are correct, I am here a lot and express a LOT of opinions, sometimes very strongly.....but, I know they are opinions and not facts.

It's what people wanted to happen but there was no evidence that it was ever a real consideration......however, there was information to strongly suggest that Laurent and Diallo were leaving.

quite rare - and usually have some quirk linked to the situation - but here's one

Keith Stone - Florida - The 6-foot-8 forward from Deerfield Beach, Fla., redshirted [ 2015-16 ] as a true freshman last year while changing his body. As he tells it, he came in “fat” at 235-240 pounds before dropping down to 227 and building himself back up to 245 with muscle.

Happ from Wisconsin also was a healthy redshirt as a freshman.

He also talked about all of college basketball.

not to split hairs - but the the original challenge was:

Please. Open your eyes, dude. BTW, in about 35 years of following Rutgers basketball, I can't recall a single instance of us redshirting a guy who wasn't injured or an academic non-qualifier. Not one. If you can name two healthy scholarship redshirts in all of college basketball EVER, let me know who they are. This isn't football.

so, it was not 2 players from RUTGERS - it was - " in all of college basketball EVER" .. and a few of those were provided .. Now... to be fair - redshirting a healthy player is the exception - and usually only done when there is quite an abundance of talent on the squad - fully ready to take the court - so it is pretty rare - but is not totally unheard of - and some programs seem to feel that they can afford to do it from time to time.

Now, with respect to Bullock - an analysis using conventional wisdom would leave him with out a real role to fill - but it may be worth while to see how Pikiell & Co intend to use him - no point in assigning grades before the true test is taken.

Trevor Cooney, Ben McLemore, current Wisconsin players Aleem Ford, Jordan Hill,... and there are many more in college BB. All you need to do is Google it and find them.

I think you'll find some from top programs and some from other programs when a guy just needs to get bigger/stronger or came in out of shape....like Bullock. You can find them in Mike Brey's, Rick Pitino, John Beilen and I think, Bob Higgins' programs.

Many of those 5th Year Grad Transfers that are available every year redshirted due to non-medical or academic reasons.....I don't think they are graduating in 3 years.

My reading comprehension sucks. I was looking at the sentence above the one you hilighted.

Your arguments are all moot.... Bullock received a "medical" redshirt. Stop wasting time with semantics people. No team needs to go 13 deep. Your last 2 roster slots are often used for either giving deserving loyal walk-ons scholarships, redshirts, or transfer slots. Pikiell burning one or two of 13 slots on *high impact* transfers or redshirts to develop isn't bad. Thiam would've been a perfect redshirt candidate if the team wasn't bereft of talent last year.

Red shirting healthy players is not that uncommon. Villanova red shirted Mikail Bridges three years ago so he could put on some weight and get stronger.

It's not a major stretch to think that Bullock was redshirted so that he could get in shape.

Also not a major stretch to think that if he DOES get in shape, he can contribute as a rotation guy at the 2/3 spots.

Interesting that we posters are spending so much time discussing the 13th player on the roster which I take as a positive sign of a coaching staff that understands the value of having a complete roster to compete at a high level in a major conference. Every scholarship player on the team has to have a value and be able to contribute to the team's success. I'm loving Coach P's mantra. Not here to debate why Bullock offered or why on roster just want to give observations based on highlight reel linked on this thread. Kid has size, can finish with contact, is agile and can stroke it from the outside but don't know how his game is going to translate at this level. Seems more like 6'2 than 6'4" but can jump off the block for his size. Kid would be a beast playing at MLB spot if he had football in him but I digress. HS vids show he's fluid, effortless but can also be viewed as a bit pudgy/overweight/glider. If he trims out perhaps he can get minutes at the 2 guard or in 3 guard set. He looks too short to play power forward at this level. If he was a true 6'4"+ I can see the path of a Rashard Kent who was more like a tightend who would later get some time in the NFL as a free agent signing; but don't see Bullock in this mold. He simply does not have the height. Wish him the best in getting ready for the new season as he tries to crack the guard rotation.

GO RU

The more I think about this...more I am pretty sure we need another big.

We have only four true guys playing the four and five (not counting Onamuyri stealing a few minutes at the FOUR)

And Doorson isn't 100%. yet anyways

Think we need another big there badly....I am high on Johnson, but we are one injury away from major issues....need a fifth big for depth

I dunno Shack. Our biggest issue is shooting and scoring. I'd rather live with five post guys -- Freeman, Doorson, Sa, and Johnson, plus Omoruyi (who I think is going to play mostly PF this year) -- and get a grad transfer 2/3 who can score.

The reality is that we need BOTH a big and a shooter. But if we're plugging holes in dikes, and weighing the priorities, I think a 2/3 is preferable. Especially since the college game is increasingly a guard/wing-dominated game nowadays.

I truly think it is the best player available situation...even for 1 year.

I will stick to my premise that the supply of non big men far exceeds the supply of big men and getting a gettys caliber player is very rare.

As I've noted many times in the past - our roster is not at a point where we specifically recruit positions (especially with this 13th spot). It is strictly best player available who WANTS to be a Scarlet Knight. If that so happens to be a PG, i'm sure coach Pikiell would jump all over that. Likewise for a wing, or a big. He has shown through his coaching career he can coach to his personnel, not just coach to a system.
