RU OC Search New Names: Lashlee, Trickett & McNulty Updat

If he is step up from the last 3 years - 3 OCs I’m all for him ....

Let me ask this question. What is Ash waiting for? All of the names mentioned previously are available, so why the delay? I’m making a prediction right now that the next RU OC will be Courtney Messingham, the OC at North Dakota State that Will playing for the FCS National Championship on January 6th. He and Ash have history together at Iowa State. I could be wrong but I think this guy checks all of the boxes, especially if he wins a National title. Something to think about.

He's worked with Herman, became OC on Rhoads staff after Herman left but was fired after 2 years, and has worked with Kevin Wilson at IU too. So the connection is there, so I could see it.

Article on him when he was hired by NDSU. Not sure what kind of offense they're running up there and how much influence the HC has on it. NDSU has been doing well for awhile so did he join a rolling bandwagon or did he upgrade it? I don't know as I don't follow closely enough.

From the article:

Now comes the usual questions of a new coordinator with the big one centering on NDSU's West Coast offense: Will the former Montana State offensive coordinator go all-Big Sky on NDSU and install a spread attack?

"No, not at all," Klieman said.

Well, for the most part not at all. Offensive line coach Conor Riley will assume the run-game coordinator responsibilities and Klieman said he'll have a lot of input from that standpoint. So that two tight-end, power run game set that has been so effective in the second half? That's going nowhere.

But Klieman said Messingham is "exceptional at the throwing game" and there is room in the NDSU offense to evolve with its concepts and schemes.

Thoughts -
If Ash truly intends to have the new OC in place when the early enrollees start their Rutgers careers (dorm move-in 1/14 and classes begin 1/16), things will be clicking into place pretty swiftly - and have to figure that there is a strong chance that a large portion of the selection process has already been completed.

This situation begs .. screams ... for a highly impactful selection
- Ash's first try at this slot was a guy with 'potential' (DM) but right or wrong, ended up looking to be too green and not seasoned enough - strike one
- Ash's second move was to bring in a fine man (JK) who had a wealth of experience and presence - but circumstances played out in ways that left him appearing to not be quite a match for what this job is going to require - strike two
- Ash and Hobbs are not idiots - they know that they don't get endless chances and this is a prime position - it has to be filled with:
(1.) a 'franchise-player' type of guy - not a journeyman - it needs to be either a hard charging up & comer who wants to someday run his own show (but not too soon - accomplish the mission here)
- or -
(2.) an OC "MacGyver" / the 'pro from Dover" kind of guy who sees building & operating offenses as his calling in life - a guy with vision & an understanding of how to make a synchronized machine out of random parts - with a burning desire to work miracles

Charming & compatible as a some veteran 'journeymen' may be - this would not be the time or place for such a choice - nor would it be good to bring in somebody who's career has veered off the path and sort of into the weeds - sure magic might happen - but if this choice is a dud - and if it appeared that it was an obvious dud from the start - then it is Strike Three for Ash ... and Hobbs is searching for an HC.
