Rutgers falls at Oregon with porous perimeter defense and struggling stars
Rutgers traveled to Eugene for the first of its two West Coast games, as the Scarlet Knights fell 75-57 at Oregon
Bro neither one plays defense. They dont have to do everything. They care about scoring & shootingThe biggest issues for this team are a lack of any rim protection on defense and a lack of good shooters on offense. Dylan and Ace cannot do everything, and they obviously did not play well against Oregon. This team needs a Myles Johnson type inside and more guards like Billet and Shields.
True but look at pitinos comment. He’s not even looking at high school kids. Different game now.At least we’ll never have to worry about it again. A lottery pick would be a fool to come here now.
Then can they at least score?Bro neither one plays defense. They dont have to do everything. They care about scoring & shooting
We will be in the final 4 not to make B1G tourneylol some said final 4!
IncorrectIf anyone played worse than our team tonight it was RUT in this game thread lol
seen it time & time again this yr when AB is on hes hitting them from the 300 section with every one in the RAC guarding him but when he is off nothing is going down. Way way too in consistent. Give me 7-14 or 8-16 every game rather than 13-16 1 game and 4-18 the nextThen can they at least score?
Mediocre is a compliment.Without big games from Ace and Dylan this is just a mediocre mid major team.
Bingo. Pike says he takes responsibility for all these losses, but not really. If he actually took responsibility, then he would admit to himself that the last three years have proven that he is in way over his head and resign. This year's absolute debacle just confirms that he cannot coach at this level.Every loss "its on me". Well if it's on you coach, then F'in resign already!!
Not sure how many coaches have resigned due to their performance. Now if we had an AD maybe he would be (cough cough) nudged in the direction to resign rather than being fired.Bingo. To be fair he said mediocre mid-major. Which is pretty bad for a Big Ten team lol.Mediocre is a compliment.
I get the point — the supporting cast isn’t very good but there aren’t a lot of teams out there that can win without their two best players playing well.Without big games from Ace and Dylan this is just a mediocre mid major team.
The RAC will be a tomb. You really think Steve has the stomach to continue after this year? ESP if we keep spiraling and everyone leaves?
I hate to tell the announcer, but he’s going to have to wait until next year for that one to happen. The announcer closed the game by saying Rutgers needs to figure out how to play defense together lol
It's the Rutgers way. Go the cheap route and pay for the cleanup down the line.So they’ve figured out a way to pay a massive buyout, but can’t figure out a way to land a portal 5?
Who would have ever expected freshman to be inconsistent? A great mystery this is.seen it time & time again this yr when AB is on hes hitting them from the 300 section with every one in the RAC guarding him but when he is off nothing is going down. No it was meant to be sarcasm but still an indictment that we don’t have a set rotation 25 games into the season. It’s a dumpster fire led by a nice guy who is clearly WAY in over his head.We played 11 guys which is the same as we did against Illinois. This is more that there is not a clear group that should play as opposed to "thinks its a rec league" or whatever. Go back and look at some box scores from 2022 for example, towards the end there were 4 guys playing like 34-38 minutes every game. Do you really think last night was because Hayes and Acuff got a few minutes each?
No one plays consistently well enough to stick with any set rotation. Every game he's looking for someone, anyone, to step up and deserve extended minutes. He's finally getting close to keeping Derkack in the locker room, which is good, but bad play on both ends from Davis and Hayes, and bad D from Acuff and Martini keeps the rotation in flux, or rather in Fluox. No it was meant to be sarcasm but still an indictment that we don’t have a set rotation 25 games into the season. Agreed 100 percent which is an indictment on the players brought in also proving he is in way over his head.No one plays consistently well enough to stick with any set rotation. OK, but then you can't also criticize his inconsistent rotations. He whiffed on the incoming players so he has no choice but to try to find a spark each game with different rotations.Agreed 100 percent which is an indictment on the players brought in also proving he is in way over his head.
On yes I can ! Continuity on offense and especially in Pikes defense is critical to success. Players knowing who is going to be where and how to rotate.OK, but then you can't also criticize his inconsistent rotations. Infuriating to watch over and over and over and over again.Or how many times you try to drive between defenders & lose ball, or throw a lazy garbage pass when doubled up frustrating
game to game changes are reasonable when trying to find the right mix. But the constant removal of players in game who are playing well is nuts. He's coaching like a participation trophy.OK, but then you can't also criticize his inconsistent rotations. Floux yes you can you have set rotations but on a night when a particular player is hot you leave him in and don’t sub him until he misses a shot or two then sub him for his regular back up. You can also have set rotations but it does not have to be tied to a time. Like Pikes 4 min in sub pattern after first tip. For years now awfulIt’s worth noting that what you want and what Divison wants are incompatible with each other.
Division wants predictable rotations where every player knows when they are rotating and who they will play with.
You want hot hand riding type stuff.
You can’t do both
There's a hot/cold player every single ****ing game that people want to leave in/take out or whatever, you absolutely can't do both. If you are reacting to the gameplay it is by definition unpredictable.Floux yes you can you have set rotations but on a night when a particular player is hot you leave him in and don’t sub him until he misses a shot or two then sub him for his regular back up. Hot hands like Aciff the other night happen 20 % (guess) .
Fair unless Ace is 15-16 from the floor and Jwill freezes him out on a shot or Pike sits himThere's a hot/cold player every single ****ing game that people want to leave in/take out or whatever, you absolutely can't do both. If you are reacting to the gameplay it is by definition unpredictable.
Also "don't sub until he misses a shot" is just dumb, forced shots by "hot" players are probably one of the biggest generators of bad shots in basketball.
there's also a difference between just missing a shot vs. that stupid "heat check" thing...and at some point a guy will miss because he's tired and been in too long. It's more art than science I think. I think some of us feel Pike is missing the art part (feel). Also "don't sub until he misses a shot" is just dumb, forced shots by "hot" players are probably one of the biggest generators of bad shots in basketball.
The starters scored every point during the disastrous double OT First Four loss to Notre Dame in Dayton in March 2022. If he'd gotten anything from the bench he'd have a second NCAA win.We played 11 guys which is the same as we did against Illinois. Or if he switches his defense and stops letting ND center kill Cliff with slip screams or off the dribble in space we win.The starters scored every point during the disastrous double OT First Four loss to Notre Dame in Dayton in March 2022. Absolutely choking away both Houston and Notre Dame become more unforgiveable with each loss this year. There's just not getting past until he he actually wins another NCAA which seems exceedingly unlikely next year.Or if he switches his defense and stops letting ND center kill Cliff with slip screams or off the dribble in space we win.
A kicker 55 yards out into a 40 mph steady win and not being ready on Defense out of a timeou? A timeout when a coaching staff has the time to prepare for all scenarios. You’re interpreting my statement as the outcome of the decision is worse.
That’s not what I said.
I’m saying the decision itself is worse. A coach fvcking up on icing a kicker (which is 100% common) is not nearly as bad as a coach intentionally giving up a possession before half in a close game.
So is chasing points early in a football game resulting in an inability to catch up (ucla). Although maybe not as bad - still.A kicker 55 yards out into a 40 mph steady win and not being ready on Defense out of a timeou? A timeout when a coaching staff has the time to prepare for all scenarios.
They are both historically terrible coaching decisions.
