Rutgers hires Drew Mehringer as OC (Houston WR coach)

It was really tough to watch this offense last year...But if there is a silver lining to this... It's that we were able to make a major upgrade at the OC and RB coaches... Combine that with upgrades at QB, WR, TE, and RB.... I think our OL, while less experienced, is a lil more athletic. If DM were still here, I think the offense this year would still see some good improvements in some areas... But I think with Kill, he will more consistently put the talent here in the best positions for success... I think we will see a much better flow to the offense, and a lot more creativity...
I think that if DM was still here we would only see improvement because our punter would be better.
The fact that he couldn't even slightly tweak his offense last year showed that he would have just continued to screw it up.

I was trying to be nice...:stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:... I would think that if he was still here that Ash would've hired a veteran consultant to work with him...also with the upgrades in talent would've made him look better...But it was clear early on (at least to me) that he didn't have what it takes to be an OC... There was no flow to his play calls... I mean it was basically, "here's the power spread..try and stop it"... I agree, no tweaking to try and take advantage of what the available talent did best...No trying to hide the most glaring weaknesses... Mistakes that Kill won't make...I can tell you right now what Kill is going to do, cuz I had the same mindset... This offense is going to be a DC's nightmare... Not because it's all of a sudden going to be a juggernaught...But because of all the scenarios that they'll have to defend...What you see is do one week, could be totally opposite the next...Being a multiple offense is very hard to do effectively.. But Kill has always specialized in being able to teach the nuances... Now will that translate into more wins? No one can answer that now, as you never know how a game can unfold...(ie..turnovers, field position, injuries). But we should have less 3& outs...at least be able to flip the field more consistently...and keep our D more rested... Opposing defenses last year ones what we were going to do...They won't have that luxury vs Kills O....Doesn't mean they won't be able to stop us.. But they will have to work harder to do it...

Drew Mehringer is the epitome of square peg trying to get into a round hole.

A great OC is able to bend and mend things to suit the players he has on the team.

Drew only ran what he wanted, and didn't do a great job it. I.E. using N/S runners going E/W, making Tylin trying to go off tackle inside the 3 yard line 2 times a row, only for him to bring Laviano in, and attempt the same thing again.

The youth squad has arrived. Sounds like the new OC loves up tempo football duck- style. Should be a refreshing change from what we've been accustomed to. May go down hard with some of the old timers. Kids should love it. Puts even more emphasis on having a good D.

Compare to PSU hire. I'm liking it.
Would you like to compare the two hires now?

Saying it was a move for the koolaid drinkers is just off base. Many were pining for the offense this "kid" allegedly was running. Cannot fault Ash for trying to be innovative.

No offense could be as bad as ours was last year.

Someone on here said DM would call plays our OL didn't know how to block for.
Or maybe that was some made up BS from the folks that used the excuse that his blocking schemes were too complicated for college athletes.

I'm happy he's gone and I was really ticked off watching those 4 plays from the 3 against Iowa. However, when I got home and saw the replays, I saw that if Odin or Laviano had pitched the ball, Harris would have walked into the end zone untouched. Both QBs screwed the pooch on those plays, not the play call.

That's if you are under the assumption that both players were given the okay to lateral the ball if there was an opportunity to do so.

Plus I don't know how overly protective of the ball Ash and Mehringer were of the ball as Schiano was. Remember how with Rice/Leonard we'd use the fake FB Dive handoff play only for the QB to pitch the ball to Ray Rice on a sweep play, and when they were gone they tried it again, it was fumbled once and that play was never seen again.

I was wondering why this thread got resurrected from the dead.
Look, we all thought he was an OC.
We?

The fact that he couldn't even slightly tweak his offense last year showed that he would have just continued to screw it up.
And would his inability to communicate with the OL coach have continued?

Bingo, see my comment to yes.

Or maybe it isn't.

But, for Laviano, that was like asking a priest to manage a bordello. Round hole, square peg situation.

I don't really care, personally. But on a lot of forums out there, this kind of thread necrophilia is prohibited. Why not start a new thread?

Have we given a fruit basket to Texas yet for taking him off our hands?

Reading his Texas bio is funny. WHOLE bunch of stuff about Houston. Only Rutgers bit is that he was the youngest OC and worked to install a new system for Chris Ash. THAT'S IT. If you can't say something nice...

I assume that would be dead thread necrophilia...sounds like a potentially new internet disorder - maybe you should research it and publish on it, lol.

It has a term, it is called Necroposting, it is a troll technique and it can get you ban at many boards.

Not looking to get banned here. Thought it was some good offseason reading. I just think we need to take all the offseason talk with a grain of salt and let the season tell the tale

For the love of god that play sequence was horrible. Hand the ball to an 165 lb. Freshman. And then run a speed option with the most unathletic QB in the country. I honestly think Gio would've got in as he was a way more effective runner than Oden and a lot bigger.

The only possible purpose for resurfacing this thread is to disparage the Head Coach, and in turn the football program on the whole. It's this type of behavior by our own fans which holds the program back.

It's our own fans being cynical and skeptical of our own chances of becoming a better team in the college football landscape.

Exactly. It's a bannable offense on some boards.

Necroposting - cool word. Seems mostly harmless compared to seriously active trolling within threads. Of course, I wouldn't ban anyone short of serious threats of violence, but I get why boards do it, if it makes for happy posters, especially if there is income at stake (and there is, indirectly, here, as this board is the main feeder for Premium).

I don't disagree. Banning should be for a serious offense or if a poster has a history of trolling which plum street does not...some may even call him a koolaide drinker with scarlet glasses...oh wait...never mind

I thought it was interesting to go back and read it again now. Of course, I feel pretty good about I wrote at the time so maybe that shapes my current opinion.

He may have been statistically the worst OC in the nation, maybe even in years, but that little Amish looking bugger could recruit with the best of them. At least before all the shutouts and waterworks. Last April was the peak of the Ash Era so far.

Rettig would have scored.

Agreed, he was a great recruiter and seemed like a good guy who really cared and wanted to do a good job. He was just in over his head. He should've been a WR coach and a recruiter when he came here.

Don't get me wrong. I wouldn't ban anybody for anything if it were up to me. Just pointing out that necroposting is bannable on many other boards. It really doesn't bother me, but it does seem to be used for malicious purposes a lot where it's not prohibited.
