Rutgers MAY be opening stores in airport and malls

Their own shop might be excessive in the airport, but could work in some malls. I think just placing some shirts, hoodies, in existing airport souvenir shops would be sufficient for now. But if they want to go for the homerun then I'm all for it. Even if it doesn't make money, its essentially a great form of Marketing & advertising.

Agreed, own store is too much

Usually these kind of stores don't last forever. Its like a form of a marketing campaign. So you put a store in at the airport and the mall to increase visibility of your product, but the store only has a 3-5 year lease and then you shut it down.

I wonder if this is a joint venture with Barnes and Noble College who runs the bookstore.

I think a relatively cheap starting point would be to have Rutgers shirts, etc. sold at the service areas along the Turnpike and GSP. It would seem to me the number of potential customers that come through NJ along these roads (and who have heard of Rutgers) far exceeds anything you would get at an airport shop. If you can buy a Turnpike tee shirt at a service area shop, you should be able to buy a Rutgers shirt.

I think it's awesome that this is even being considered

Until 2005, it was nearly impossible to find Rutgers gear in any of the major stores..

I remember going into a Lids in Manhattan in 2006 and they didn't have one Rutgers hat

The rest area idea is a SOLID one. The PA Turnpike rest areas are just lousy with State Penn crap.

Not sure a dedicated RU store is necessary, but RU items in the airports and rest areas seems like a no brainer. I know when I travel out of state and don't have a lot of time for souvenir shopping I pick up tee shirts in the airport for my son with the local college team. Should be an option for those visiting here, and obviously helps to promote us.

Not sure they need a shop, but a decent store carrying more range of stuff would be good. Lids, when it was at Newark, had some stuff.

Then go with a BIG10 store with an overwhelming content of RU gear.

This is the model: a conference store that's overweighted toward the "local" school. With the solid # of B1G alumni in the area and/or passing through EWR, the store could move some goods especially around bowl and NCAA season.

This is a good idea. The more people seen in and around New Jersey wearing RU gear, the better.

This.
How about having some or any Rutgers apparel in the Newark Airport now ?
See plenty of Giants and Jets gear in Hudson News and other shops at Newark but no RU. Nothing .

In a business environment where Amazon is running off Brick & Mortar businesses (Sports Authority) it seems counter-intuitive to run toward a B&M solution. We have a presence in Kohls (one of the savviest B&M retailers) that we could leverage. Kiosks at the airport are places to run past on your way to the duty-free liquor. Amazon itself offers a wide assortment of RU product including an RU dog collar and an 80's vintage Rutgar Hauer 8x10 "collectible" (as Roy from Blade Runner).
