Schiano needs more support to Win Championships

Al your a good poster but sometimes you have to acknowledge the reality of the situation.

One can build a successful football program (Not National Championship Caliber) with Rival 3-Star recruits and a few Rival 4-Stars.

The more top teams that the B1G collects (Expansion Fatigue) the harder it will be for Rutgers to ever contend for the National Titles.

Take Nebraska for example, while in the Big 12 they won the Big 12 North Division 6 times and won the Big 12 Championship twice.

Nebraska has won 5 National Titles and ONE while in the Big 12.

How is Nebraska doing since they joined the B1G.

If the General Public begins to believe that College Football National Championships are won by the Teams (10-15) that spend the most money then interest in the game may begin to wane. As I said previously, TV viewership for the National Championship Game between
Ohio State and Notre Dame was down 12%.

Even if Rutgers would build a new field house I don't believe it would change the situation much.

The "Baby Bust" generation will have a profound effect on the Nation just as the "Baby Boom" generation had.

Penn State is confronting the first wave of the Baby Bust generation with the closing of 7 Branch Campuses and will have a Public Comment meeting next week. I wonder if anyone will bring up the fact that PSU will spend $700 million for a upgrade to Beaver Stadium (used 7 times a year) and spend millions for students to play football (NIL).

Winning a National Championship is not a BIG Deal anymore (IMO) if you have to pay to play.

Just enjoy Rutgers football games even if they are 7-5.

HAIL TO PITT!!!!

A National Championship is the stated goal of the head coach and Rutgers has the location and Coach to win a Championship, and that’s all that really matters. He has the talent to identify recruits who can someday grow into NFL talents. But Many of the recruits he identifies first, are picked off by “better” programs because our value proposition isn’t strong enough.

There is more talent within 1 hour of Rutgers than just about anywhere. What we additionally need is the support to land more of it. This is the biggest item we’re lacking.

We might never win a Championship. But if it’s due to a lack of support, than Shame on us. We have a once in a lifetime opportunity to make Rutgers a top flight program rather than a mediocre program we’ve been the past 156 years. All it’s gonna take is a few good people to make it happen. We must take every opportunity to be the best we can be.

We will only be Elite if we get a whale donor or donors to buy in / donate

I certainly don’t expect that right now. But what I do expect, in year 20 of his coaching tenure, with stop at Ohio State $ the NFL in between, is to not be repeating the same mistakes as he did during GS 1.0.

Though he’s evolved to a point, he is still the same old Greg at the end of the day. There’s been numerous examples of that throughout GS 2.0, and none more frustrating than during the Illinois debacle last year.
Rutgers doesn’t have whales but we have numbers in a large alumni base.

I believe we have 750 fans who can donate $100K over 4 years. That will get us to the $75M we need to build our Fieldhouse.

Greg is human and not a machine. We will live with his mistakes. The hope is one day, our talent level will be so high, that his mistakes won’t matter. I’ve always felt we could replicate Miami 2001 at Rutgers. That is the ultimate goal, imo.

What you don’t understand is that the people providing the money will always have more to give.
Please look up Stephen Ross and Louis Wexner.

This is the conference we chose to play in, and no one had a problem with it until they were asked to support. We don’t need blue blood money but we do need more than we have now to carve out a consistently competitive existence. We won’t be a yearly contender, but we should be able to have a special season every once in a while.

You can’t say I’m not going to give anything and expect Rutgers to compete.
Well if Rutgers needs any of my Money to compete we are out of luck

Al is a great fan, but saying Schiano and 2012 got us close is loser talk. We didn't even finish in the Top 2 in the watered-down Big East in 2006. Had to go to a lower bowl game. 2012 was a miss since we would have gone to a New Year's Day bowl. Again, we come up small in the big moment.

Basketball gets 2 generational talents and can't even have a winning season. Pretty much every team lets us down. We are so lucky to be in the B1G but our role is to be 8-5 in a great year.

A poster above made a good point in that after you consider the lack of support for Rutgers, NJ is just too expensive for anyone to want to contribute more. If you can't land whales, just be happy getting to a bowl once in a while, the tailgates and the 6-7 fall Saturday's. It's never going to be more than that.
Saying 2006 was a watered down BE is completely off the mark. For instance- that would be in reference of BC(final ranking of 20) Mia(not ranked) VaTec(19)
And the BE had Ville(6th- and we beat) WVU(10th - and we outplayed them) and Rutgers at 12. Even USF was pretty good that year at 9-4.
The BE had as many or more ranked teams then ACC( 3 teams all ranked higher than 18) BIG 12 (2) PAC 10 (3) Even the BIG 10 only had 4 ranked teams.

We also had two 5-2 teams during those years. The same record that won the conference for UConn. So, our 5-2's just happened to be bad timing of years.

What you and Al don’t understand is that if we do happen to raise the funds to compete with the blue bloods is that they will in turn just get more money, so you still won’t have enough and then you have to do it all over again the next year. It’s not sustainable as the beast always needs more money
please don’t lump me with Al ! i’m saying if money was equal for all schiano is good enough coach , recruiter , face of the program etc to win a championship. unfortunately money is not equal and that hurts programs like RU.

I wouldn’t say that . He's the greatest coach in Rutgers history. He brings us respect . You saw what happened here in the last 40 years when he wasn’t the coach . Thats a large enough sample size to say he’s great for Rutgers

Yup this. Terrible hot take. Even Shelby only complains that he’s mediocre and overpaid. “Can’tcoach a lick” is ridiculous considered how much better he’s done at Rutgers than anyone else historically.

We still finished 3rd in the Big East that year. We lost to a back up in the final conference game. We can go back and forth but your stats are not impressive. As good as that team was (best in my lifetime) we underperformed. And that pretty much describes Rutgers sports in my lifetime.

The point is - it’s unfortunately the best in anyone’s lifetime and quite a few coaches have come and gone.

What’s even worse is statistically the best year was under Flood. He was the only one to win (a share at that) of anything.

Flood wasn’t here very long though and rode the wave of Schiano’s recruiting success. It’s hard to compare him to any other coach in RU history because he’s the only one to walk into a positive (up trending situation). Every other coach we’ve had inherited a train wreck. Flood deserves credit for hiring Fridge and the 8-5 season.

I love the guy plum, but his limitations will prohibit us from getting Elite. Even if we got the funds, or a whale donor, those would have to outweigh this bonehead coaching decisions and stubborn insistence on being entirely to conservative entirely when it matters, as well as his inability to consistentlyrecruit elite offensive talent due to those aforementioned limitations and continued stubborn ways

Ummm what makes you think we will ever be elite ?

Yes stated goal publicly. Internally, the stated goal is for to the Pinstripe and win it You will hear that become public eventually

There are times I hate having to defend Greg so I’ll defend those players. And it is so frustrating to have to go through this time and time again.
In 2006, coming off our first Bowl season in a couple of seasons, we beat L’Ville in what could still be one of the most memorable wins and scenes that is recognized around college football. We lost a game we should have won but…those 15 yd PI instead of spot of the fouls or have those plays play out, changes that to an easy RU win. Go through the play by play again and you will see it. But we did lose and should not have. The WVU game- sure lost to the backup- but guess what, he was a pretty damn good college QB. But, it was at their house and we can’t go through the 2-3 game changing FU’s by officials that changed the outcome. And even years later- it is still blatant. But even losing in those OT’s in their house to 10th ranked….and you find that a negative on that team?
And that was a team built on 2&3 stars who came to RU as we were constant losers.

It just pisses me off when some “fans” really go off narrative and not a full understanding of circumstances. Worst team in the nation to first bowl to number 12 ranking and someone like you needs to shit on it.

I am an alumni and Rutgers fan long before you ever heard of Rutgers. You don't need to educate me on anything. You reply from the perspective of a parent of a player. We lost to Cincinnati and West Virginia. Good teams but in the grand scheme of college football that year, were still miles from being great like Florida. To claim Louisville and USF as great team just shows your lack of college football perspective.

And I am not sh*tting on the players or coaching staff. I already said that was the best team I ever saw at Rutgers. And we still finished 3rd in the conference. That is the reality no matter how you spin it.

Do t distort what I said…never said USF was a great team. Said they were pretty good that year. L’Ville, yeah- they were pretty damn special that year.
We also all know the circumstances of that WVU game as well. And even then, it is not a bad loss. The Cincy loss was the blemish on that season.
As for my perspective, I had not been a GS fan and did think he had a problem with coaching adjustments and game day.
But that 06 team may have finished “3rd” but it was much better than that. And that was with mostly 2,3 and NR players.
People that like to bring up finishing “3rd” are the ones without perspective.

I think this is more of a perception of success debate than anything else. Some folks seem to accept / believe that right now, Rutgers just isn’t in a place where it’s very likely that any coach who would step into the role would have a legit shot of winning a Natty in the foreseeable future.

We have a solid coach who has strengths and weaknesses, but overall gives us a chance to be competitive year in and out. Progress hasn’t been linear but it’s been steady in the sense that we’re getting blown out far less and to this point have consistently taken care of business in the games we’re supposed to win (along with winning a good percentage of the 50 / 50 games).

Sure - it wouldn’t be hard to find a game day coach who wound not have blown that Illinois game, but on the other hand, that alternative probably wouldn’t be as good at Schiano at many other things.

Fans need to be realistic about where Rutgers is as a program. Taking random shot in that dark at someone (and yeah - that’s pretty much what it would have to be because we’re not in a financial position to buy a highly successful FBS head coach that other programs are after) - is not a risk worth taking right now. Not by a long shot because landing another Ash could permanently destroy the program beyond repair. We’d probably get kicked out of the BIG TBH. Unfortunately, the boot Schiano crowd doesn’t seem to calculate this risk into the flavor of the minute suggestions they put out to replace Greg.

The probability of any replacement (even an up and comer type) thriving at Rutgers to the point where they do materially better things than Greg projects to do in the medium term is not higher than the probability of us getting someone who doesn’t understand Rutgers sports nuances and brings us down to Ashland.

The expanded playoffs give some teams a fighters chance if they start playing very well toward the end of the season. But still a tough road.
For right now, GS is our best option and not because I think he is a great coach but because he has a unique understanding of “The State of Rutgers”
And a big part of that is finding the right players and their families that see a bigger picture in life then a one time NIL payout. This allows him to develop players and keep them here.
I think that is also a part of the way he drummed up some extra money last year with some larger donors.
I like the old way where you didn’t just have guns for hire but that may be the only way to win a NC regardless of the coach.
So, my internal debate is if a NC is that important anymore if it is with gunslingers or having a consistent good team that makes the playoffs every once in a while but we get to see kids play here that really love Rutgers.

Having driven through most of the state visiting real estate in place like Johnstown and Chambersburg, the numbers don’t surprise me. Most of the state is stuck decades in the past and the gap between these areas and the rest of the country is widening.

SUNY’s upstate campuses face the same dilemma.

New Jersey enjoys the benefit of a dense population across most of the state plus a huge suburban and massive growing immigrant population that values education. That is why I am bullish on Rutgers - not the sports - but the university. However, Rutgers Camden’s enrollment is in free fall but there is zero chance this campus is shut.

Shelby takes it further. Shelby knows mediocre, overpaid coaches get fired at schools truly pursuing high-level competitiveness.

We’ve seen what Mr. I. T. Kicker is. The completely undeserved raise and extension prove the university is only in this conference for the paycheck and the usual .333 conference winning percentage exceeds expectations.

Football-wise, our name should be Loser University for as long as he’s retained. Lowest bar in FBS.

Thats a different point and opinion. My post was in response to “can’t coach a lick”. That honor belongs to the Ash types. You and others do not appropriately factor in the risk of ending up with someone like that again (you seem to think there’s a like 99% chance whoever we would bring in would not completely bomb when the realistic odds are probably closer to 30-40% and definitely not less than say 15% with a non-zero chance of us getting booted from the conference if that were to happen). But as I said - that’s a different point entirely.

Understood by Shelby. And sure, the replacement might be worse. But that’s no excuse for not aiming higher than this guy can deliver. It’s the same for every school: coaches are fired and the hope is the replacement will fare better. It doesn’t always work that way but only losers don’t try.

Shelby didn’t disagree with PSAL on the ‘ ‘can’t coach a lick’ opinion. But as White Mamba’s claims proved he’s a lot closer to LeBron in talent than street ballers are to him….Mr. I. T. Kicker is a lot closer to a ‘can’t coach a lick’ coaching nobody than he is to a top coach.

Loser University will always be that until it aims a lot higher than he’s capable of.

Exactly why does this Syracuse Shelby remain on our board always posting this type of stuff?

It seems like there are some “fans” who can’t see past a blinding rage at their own inadequacy. They can see it! They can’t realize that Schiano is a great coach, the perfect coach for Rutgers, and probably a once in a lifetime coach. Those people are bad for the program and self-defeating.

We will slowly but steadily improve as Schiano builds more and more foundation every year.

Actually - even if it turns out that your right that Schiano can’t lead us to bigger things, that still doesn’t mean now is a good time to roll the dice with a new. You keep acting like it’d be no big deal to try someone else and have them turn out awful. Or that odds are very good that we’d get someone comparable or better than Schiano. History does not support that thesis. And right now is a tenuous time in terms of the stability of college sports and conference affiliation. There are no guarantees in life but Schiano is as close to a guarantee as we can get that we can remain dug out of the laughing stock basement cellar and that is not a small thing. It’s huge.

Schiano has proven time and time again, he is not a good enough coach to win a championship. And fwiw, I like him and wanted him to come back. But he struggles on game day.
Cmon man. If he had Ohio state’s roster year in and year out he would win a championship at some point by blind luck . Look at Ryan day

Not true at all. OSU hired a young Day with no HC experience and sent the much more senior yet incompetent Schiano packing.

Rutgers tossed Mr. I. T. Kicker a life preserver when every single other school would have let him sink.

It doesn’t matter man. We’re not OSU. So what if they thought Day was better than Schiano for their program? It doesn’t mean anything.

The chance of Rutgers going into the open market and landing a coach that is going to make us anything close to a natty contender is extremely low. Thats not just the case for Rutgers - it’s true of 80% of FBS programs. Maybe more. The chance of RU going into the open market and ending up with someone who is not only worse than Schiano but drags us back to the perrenial basement is not low at all. And the stakes for our program if that were to happen could be massive.

So not worth it to aim high, huh ? Then why play ? You’re OK with being the Big10’s version of Wagner ?

Shelby doesn’t expect to ever be OSU and that’s fine but the university being ok with an under .400 conference ceiling with this unwanted by anyone else hack is a disgrace.

Keeping this guy indefinitely with raises and extensions is the same as a tomato can boxer taking a dive every fight only being interested in the paycheck.

I must note that Antonio Tillis, chancellor at Rutgers-Camden since 2021, has apparently done nothing to reverse the enrollment drop (32% drop between 2018 and 2023). The drop started under his predecessor, Phoebe Haddon.

That is why I am bullish on Rutgers - not the sports - but the university. However, Rutgers Camden’s enrollment is in free fall but there is zero chance this campus is shut.

Unfortunate but true.

Penn State originally discussed closing 12 Branch Campuses but revised it to closing 7 Branches.

The community and political blow back was very bad and probably made them reconsider for now the closure of the other 5 Branch Campuses.

I think the general public will be able to comment next week.

I am curious what the public will say about campus closures when PSU will spend $700 million on upgrades to Beaver Stadium which will be used 7 times a year.

Maintaining tuition paying student body in the future will be a challenge for most colleges and universities with the Baby Bust generation just beginning. I think Private Colleges and Universities with their high tuition will be most impacted and we will probably see many close in the future.

I think the Public AAU Research Universities such as Rutgers and Pitt will be able to weather the storm.

Pitt will have to maintain a student body of about 33,000 students (23,000 undergrad and 10,000 grad).

Many more of these discussions will be occur as schools close in the future.

HAIL TO PITT!!!!

Yes .
But if he had the talent his game day coaching would magically be better

I’d put it differently. We would win more games, yes. But from a Game Day perspective if he was in the same situation we were in vs Illinois against, say, PSU, at the end of the game, there is still a good chance we would lose with the decision he made. Sometimes he just tries to overcoach it seems. He’s good at certain aspects of Game Day but not great at others.

Last year he had a .444 Conference Win percentage, which easily could have been .555, if not for the Illinois mistake. He is the best this University is capable of hiring. While his game day coaching is suspect, he is an exceptional recruiter.
The talent on the roster is light years better than where it was in 2020. While the roster is a notch below PSU, OSU, and Michigan, it should be competitive with everyone else. That is a testimony to his hard work and dedication, overcoming the constraints for his situation— limited resources.
