I think many RU fans consider SHU as our biggest rival. It is SHU fans who act as if RU is below them and keep saying that Nova and St. John's are their biggest rivals. Most SHU fans act like RU is garbage next to their team. They just keep commenting on your site that RU should get the boot from the BIG and that we will never be able to compete in the BIG. Many keep saying Pikiell should get let go as he hasn't done anything yet. We shall see soon enough.

Disagree. The rivalry may have lacked the juice of late, but any honest SHU fan will tell you that a loss to RU is the toughest to take. Villanova is a different rivalry given that the two teams have now played some historic games against each other especially in the BET.
RU is our number 1 non conference rival. The game is always a dog fight. This year will be no different. Go Pirates!
Powell remembers the game in 2017 but he leveled Omoruyi when the game was over with less than 2 seconds left. Luckily RU remained composed as things could have gotten ugly. Powell seemed to have matured a lot last year. He is an outstanding player. The game this year should be exciting.
Powell killed RU at the rock last year. He was on fire. He'll be good again, but it will be a close game.

The rivalry is strong and it will even get more bitter when they really recruit the same players head to head.

I don't think that SH is a big rivalry for Rutgers. Beating SH doesn't make an otherwise underperforming season. Losing to SH doesn't ruin an otherwise good season. The SH game is not the focal point of the season.
Sure, there is geographic proximity, which makes it a very easy road game for both teams. And since both schools play in high major leagues, there is more interest than in other geographic proximate games like Monmouth or St Peters.
I think there is more juice for the game on the SH side. (Similar to FB where Rutgers fans are more juiced about the Penn State game than PS fans are.)
But I don't think this game falls into the big rivalry category.

I don't think we have a basketball "big rivalry". I think the importance of games depends on the season and how the season progresses.
This year I am looking at the Nebraska games (partly because of BBT last year) and the Maryland games as bellwether games. We play each team early and then late, so they'll give us an indication of how the season is progressing.
If we beat SH and SH ends up being a top-15 team, then it is an important OOC win. If we lose to SH, or SH ends up around 85, then it is just another OOC game. Maybe the Pitt game ends up being more important.
I'm not happier or more upset with the result of the SH game than I would be with the result of the Pitt game two weeks earlier.

With how weak our ooc schedule is the shu game is even more important because its basically our only opportunity for a quality ooc win for our tourney resume. The bellweather for this game is an 11 days stretch in december with 4 games with pitt wisconsin msu and shu. If we dont win at least 2 that’ll tell us all we need to know
No offense that’s either a week response or you’re trying to justify some weird position. If you were admitting that RU doesn’t have any real rivalry then you are admitting a major weakness in the program.
Most SHU fans will agree that Villanova, Rutgers and St. John’s are our natural rivalries. You can define a rivalry by ticket sales, being able to point to memorable games and having some kind of bragging rights. There is obviously more juice if one or both teams are ranked but it doesn’t discount whether there is a rivalry or not.
Any one person who says this is not a big rivalry is just lying to themselves. Anyone who has gone to a game knows better. I love this game and hate when we loose. I would say the crowd speaks for this rivalry.
Maybe we're just defining "rivalry" differently. I'd be surprised if SH considers St Johns a big rivalry. Geographic proximate, yes, but rivalry, no. Do either school have the dates of their games circled on their calendar? Can the outcome of the game make or break a season? Would you trade 2 wins over Georgetown and Marquette for 1 win over St Johns?
If that's your definition of a big rivalry, that explains why you think Rutgers-SH is a big rivalry.

I think you have a different definition of what a “rivalry” is. If SHU — with the geographic ties and long history of great battles — isn’t a “rival,” then I don’t know what a rivalry actually is.

Seton Hall is 100% a rivalry, and our biggest one. The matchup lost luster when we left the Big East and because the program was so irrelevant.
The deal to make this a yearly matchup every Saturday right before the holidays and the game at the RAC two years ago has put this rivalry back on the map. The atmosphere is gonna be great in December.

I already defined what I think a rivalry is. St. John’s is definitely a rivalry. Geography, history, recruiting battles, and some of the games that we played with them.
Sure, in any given season a higher ranked team means more for post season, but a rivalry establishes itself over the long term, not in any one particular season. Beating Oregon or Michigan State this year would be huge, but they are not rivalries.
Most SHU fans that I know would rather beat Rutgers and Nova over any of the other BE schools.
Obviously I have a different take on what makes a rivalry than some others on this board.

As someone who lived in North Jersey for 42 years but have now lived out of state for 26 years, I no longer consider SHU a rival. I would take a win over Penn State or most any Big Ten team rather than a win over SHU. SHU doesn't have the cache outside of NJ/Northeast that it does instate. Having said that I still will enjoy us kicking their assses in December.
So we weren't even in the Big East when you left New Jersey. You're certainly allowed your opinion but I think you're a couple decades behind the curve on this one. Have you attended a single RU-Hall game since then?
