Smart has already officially turned down NC State and Illinois, and rumors were hot and heavy that he was offered by Minnesota and Marquette as well as a couple NBA teams.

Yeah, he'll be coming to Rutgers REAL soon.

Another self-hating Rutgers fan, in sea of self-hating Rutgers fans. All it takes is the right timing, and the right check, and anything is possible. I know it has been a suicide -inducing stretch for Rutgers hoops, but those of you who really feel this way should probably find another team to support. My goodness, Rutgers is in the Big Ten now. Let's act like it.
If the RU administration acted like its men's basketball team is a B1G member my vibe would be much more positive.

If Rutgers got paid like it was in the Big Ten, it might act like it was in the Big Ten. We are still getting AAC money, a year after getting CUSA money.

Maybe true in theory but what in the last 25 years of RU basketball would lead you to believe they would ever spend the money necessary to hire someone of Shaka Smart's stature?

Only one thing WJL: The Big Ten.

I could someday see a coach coming here that was high profile. Years ago, Lute Olson went to Arizona when they were a horrible program. But they will not happen anytime soon. It would require an administration with vision and commitment. That has no chance of happening until 2021, if then,

So maybe we will have on more coaching change before then. If jordan does not change things, in 2-3 years I still see a mid major hire.

Paying a highly successful head coach is the easy part of getting one. It is what he wants written in his contract that is where it becomes impossible for a lot of schools. They will require a large amount for assistant coaches. They also will have it written in with very firm dates on facility additions or massive improvements if the coach feels they are sub standard that he will struggle to recruit to. Saying "I promise to do X in 3 years" means the hot coach goes somewhere that has or will do what he wants. They require it in writing because they have the control. Paying a coach $3mil a year is easy, it is the rest that gets costly. So to say any coach will go somewhere if you pay him is not taking into account how much it may really take to get that coach.

I think people should begin to get used to the next coach being named Hurley.
The same may be true for the Smurfs. If nothing else, it would make
for some interesting games. I'd rather it be a higher profile hire but it feels like
that's the current trend.

Never in a million years would a guy who lost consecutive first round games to 12 and 10 seeds come here. Wow, it must be really bad here.

It is.

When people criticize VCU for not winning in the first round that just goes to show you the job he's done.

VCU is no longer a mid major so he's not looking at Rutgers as an upgrade. He's dating a model. Rutgers is like a 4.5 to him.

Wow, it must be really bad here. The salient point is that you can't lose 1st round games in the tournament unless you're IN the tournament. And you can't lose to 12 and 10 seed unless you're seeded 5th or 7th, which means your team probably won 23-25 games. When was the last time RU was in the NCAAs? When was the last time they won 20 games? Now why would he leave a successful program that's actually committed to winning basketball for one that has been mired in mediocrity to outright futility for almost 3 decades and has shown no serious institutional commitment whatsoever to even being competitive? Add in the fact that he's being seriously courted by real programs and probably makes more money at VCU than the current RU coach makes now. Long story short, it is really bad here.
