Simpson and Davis “at the rim”

The flagrant foul was also a total bailout. It looked to me like the defender hit the ball and that was what knocked Derek off balance.

thats what point guards do.

Maybe I just have lower expectations which is why i had no problem with his attacking the rim. Simpson is never going to be Jason Kidd.....but he can be Jacob Young. He has a place on this roster even if Dylan is on it.

… and he made the right call. Got fouled and 2 points while avoiding a turnover. What other outcome did you want?
The right play.

Next time should Gavin not pass because him taking it to the rim is higher percentage than Simpson taking it to the rim?

Eventually people stop filling the lanes if they dont get the ball. Cliff stops working if he doesnt get the ball.

Players should be above that thinking, but they are human and after awhile it affects them.

Cliff is in the wrong but he has already showed his frustration to his teammates.

It’s about running an efficient break. I’m sure who gets to finish and score doesn’t cross the minds of the players. It was a simple two man break that was executed properly … it resulted in drawing a foul and scoring 2 points, mission accomplished. The player making a nice pass is as satisfied as the player scoring.

efficient break is a bounce pass and a layup for Gavin.

Wrong decision was made, result aside. Derek could have easily had the ball stripped or the shot blocked by the trailing defender.

It would have been a risky pass back to Gavin that most likely would have been a turnover. Why fixate on this play that had a positive outcome and was executed properly? I’m sure Pike, his coaches and any of the players disagree with you. Focus your angst on the bad interior pass attempts to Cliff that were repeatedly turned over, then you’d be on to something.

We are talking about shots at the rim! In and Out is a miss. He shoots way too much. We havent faced a real team yet.
Nah, he will be fine. Just has to get used to the speed, talent and physicality of the college game and learn how to finish in traffic. I'm more concerned about Simpson. He doesn't seem to have made a jump yet.

This discussion topic has jumped the shark.

..Small guards should know the play is to pass UNLESS the defender takes the pass away.
Not true. Actually if you’re leading the break the play is to take it to the rim and score unless the defender takes your lane away, then you pass. Simpson had the lane until the defender slid over and took him out resulting in a flagrant foul. He made the right decision.

You have a real short memory. Rutgers was 10-3 from Wake Forest through Michigan State. That was also the stretch when we were fully healthy.
This is something a lot of posters seem to forget. We lost Paul and Caleb early. Then we were awesome for a long stretch of the season before Mag went down. We just didn't have the depth to be able to afford injuries and it cost us

A decisive play is a bounce pass back to Gavin for a uncontested layup.

2 terrible decisions from our point guards that really stand out and are indicative of where we are right now.

1. that play. it was awful that our point guard

I'd have to watch it again but the way I remember it... the defender was in the passing lane for a bounce pass right back. Take an attacking dribble, draw the defender to commit to you, then lob it up for a crowd igniting Gavin slam

Watch it again. He gets ball with his hand then submarines him with his body. It was a body foul. The strip was clean but that doesn't mean you can take out the players body after

It wasnt an easy no doubt about it pass.

Sinpson got the result, but it wasnt a no doubt about play either

Haven’t watched it again, but what I remember is that there were two defenders between Derek and Gavin. Derek might have tried a lob but it would have been risky.

there was...i would have preferred a bounce pass still over a lob.
