Is there a sense that Ash will look to bring in some assistant coaches with local ties to NJ? So far, it does not appear that is the case. There are still a lot of spots to fill. I would hope that we could find some NJ guys in there if we want to keep talent home.

I don't think it matters.

- what matters is being able to sell - and sell in a positive sense - not in a stereotypical charlatan style. A skilled recruiter can work their butt off & fundamentally get up to speed in a hurry. They may not have a giant "Rolodex" or data file , with every NJ HS coach's name, wife's name, where they went to college and favorite restaurant and birthday & every high school memorized & programmed into his GPS - but sorry - such a guy does not exist

the key is hustle & earnestness & communication.

While I generally agree that recruiters recruit regardless of where they are from I do believe you need someone with NJ ties to sell the state school. In any event, I thought Campanile (sp?) is still on the staff.

bitnez - the beat reporters are strongly suggesting that while he's on the staff now, he won't be retained. still need to see how it plays out, but that's what they're saying.

Regarding a NJ flavor...I can see both sides of this coin...we've had a strong NJ flavor on our staff for the past 15 years and have never lit the world on fire with recruiting. While the logic side of my brain says we need to have a NJ flavor, I am also willing to let Ash do this his way. He has spent years creating his script, and I am more than willing to see how it shakes out. If I were a betting man, I would say we'll have a few guys who have recruited NJ before...they may not be Jersey guys (a la Camp), but they'll be familiar with NJ.

That's my guess anyway.

All those others schools around the country don't seem to have any issues coming into NJ and getting NJ players to commit.

Some HC coaches and lots of PARENTS, and I know this for a FACT, want bragging rights about where they send their players/children, and at this point that means the top B1G schools, SEC, etc. They actually do not want they players to come to Rutgers. So unless Rutgers can flip the script by being more successful on the field of play, we can have all the NJ ties in the world in our staff and it will make zero difference.

What we need on our staff are winners who can help us win more games and breed success. Get us into the top 25 every year and get ESPN, FOX and the rest to actually mention Rutgers besides scandals as a real football program on the raise.

Until then, lets get as many 4 and 5 stars as we can, which may not be a lot and coach up the rest.

With Flood we had zero chance of this happening. With Ash we at least have a shot.

You hit the nail on the head.....it has always been about bragging rights of the kids choices and Jersey People do not see RU as something to brag about

Most Parents listen for :
- can you help my kid reach his full potential?
- can you make sure that he is well prepared / educated / able to earn a living for the rest of his life
- can you keep him safe? safe from his own foolishness?

Parents of 5-star athletes - likely have a different perspective - they have been peppered with the idea that their kid is destined for the NFL hall of fame - and some of them are only focused on the most expeditious path to get there

I think that the thing that sells NJ to NJ recruits is unlikely to be some amorphous state pride thing. I think it's all about being near your family and friends. And that sells itself to those kids that have the combination of a happy, supportive family life and no particular desire to flee NJ. It doesn't require someone from NJ to sell it. It doesn't need to be sold at all.

OTOH, building relationships with NJ HS coaches helps, I'm sure, and NJ ties can help with that. But, so long as Ash and his staff don't behave like douchebags to the HS coaches, I think that any losses incurred by not having lifelong friends of NJ HS coaches on the RU coaching staff can be overcome by having great talent scouts on the payroll.

Camp's brother is the head coach of Bergen Catholic and we dont get Bergen Catholic kids. It doesn't matter. With the rise of twitter and Hudl the game has changed. You dont need to go through the head coach to reach out and talk to a kid or identify talents.

I would see Ash have a coach on his staff with NJ ties, but also bring in guys wired into South Florida, and maybe Georgia/VA that want to move up the college ranks where they could sell playing in the B10 to prospects.

Winning is the best recruiting tool which will be difficult to achieve in the B1G East division with schools that cherry pick the best NJ players.Player development and over achieving is the best approach right now until Ash can show success against top competition.

I think that's correct. A good relationship with HS coaches just doesn't seem to help so much these days.

However, I imagine that a bad relationship with a HS coach could matter. You don't want to piss off any coaches and have them whispering negatives in the ears of their players. Luckily, Ash and most of his staff get to start with a clean slate.

I wonder if Ash understands how things work here in NJ. He should have someone deliver some good wine and/or good Scotch to all the NJ HS coaches of talent rich teams. With a note saying "From that jolly guy dressed in scarlet."

Agreed. Unfortunately, we won't be able to win a game until next fall, and we'll need to recruit before then.

Agreed. Although a bunch of NJ coaches hold grudges against Rutgers because we are no longer a safety school for the C level players. You can't make everyone happy. Just win!

I'd imagine good relationships with HS head coaches can give a little more heads up on younger players coming up through the program - the freshman who is showing a lot of promise, that might not be on the recruiting radar yet. I'd imagine it can also help to have an "in" with the head coach to get a sense of a player's mindset, what he or the family feels is important, what his concerns are, etc - it's having a potential ally in another person close to a recruit.

I don't think that needs to be something inborn to a coach as he is hired - but he needs to be able to make those connections and inroads. And as some have said, it is sometimes more important just to not get on a coach's bad side than to get on his good side. I think if these guys are looked at as professionals who know their craft, they'll be able to engage in intelligent discussion with this coaches and build respect and rapport. I think pedigree helps here, too, as much as being a "Jersey guy" - Ash comes in with more of that because of his NC ring and association with Meyer/Bielema.
