That 3rd down play at end of Q3 is exactly why Mehringer needs to be replaced

Everyone on earth knew Maryland was bringing 6 guys at least. What does DM do? motion the running back out into the slot ........ seriously??????

If we keep 6 or 7 guys in protection, thats probably a 1st down or touchdown. Gio has a better chance of fitting a ball into a tight space then escaping down 2 guys

Falls on Ash ultimately...arrogant enough to think it was okay placing all trust into the hands of a guy that is 27 whose only experience was co-coordinator at the FCS level. Seriously? What was he thinking?

How many OCs in the B1G have less experience than him?

Fair, but my point is more that you get what you pay for. 400K is a lot of money, but in the sense of power 5 coordinator, it's not. We have a defensive minded head coach, we might be able to get away spending a little less on the defensive side of the ball, but we needed to bring in more experience on the O side. I guess at the end of the day, the budget is what it is.

Yes, let's play "rotating door" with our OC's again. How many in the past 15 years? TOO MANY. No thanks. Drew stays....BUT....you bring in some help. Even if a "Co-OC" I'd love to see him with an adviser but to run his O.

How many of those OCs were any good? Cignetti, Fridge...about it. We need the Fridge of the spread. Another year like this will seriously damage the program.

This has to be a no brainer. But Hobbs needs to find real money and the Mehringer as Co-OC needs to be in name only. He should focus on recruiting and learning.

My favorite dumb play call was when we needed a timeout for a 3rd down play. So you expect us to pick a great play...

Had 4 wideouts. 2 on each side. Then inexplicitly Drew had Flanagan motion from his position across the field as if to block inside then immediately motion back to his EXACT SAME POSITION. No extra protection inside.

As soon as Gio snapped, he took a long sack and killed the drive.

The problem this year hasn't been just talent/experience on oline. Because 3 alone are long time redshirt seniors who were NOT this bad in the past. The line issues are Drew not having any other auxiliary blocking. And certainly not coaching it up. TE blocks inside and we likely don't take a sack on that play.

We have the worst blocking TE's in the entire conference.

While I am not trying to defend DM you put a player in motion to have the defense show whether they are playing man. But, I agree with your overall premise.

Just FYI...the TEs have gotten their asses kicked in the slot by safeties and LBers...but they're going to pick up a DL? No.

Watching the offense this season was like watching somebody try to force a square peg into a round hole over and over with no willingness to adapt to the current personnel -- even slightly. Whose call is that, DM or Ash's?

I don't know but if the same lack of production happens again next season, I'm curious to see if there would as a similar result as the Schiano Era in year 2 when Schiano and OC Bill Cubit mutually parted ways.

Wonder if there is no offensive progress by game 6 or 9 next year if Ash makes a move like Bob Diaco made at UConn this year, demoting his OC and long time colleague:
http://www.courant.com/sports/uconn-football/hc-uconn-football-presser-1102-20161101-story.html
Diaco, who said he consults the offensive staff during the week but does not interfere during games, also expressed severe disappointment in the plays called by Verducci during the first series at East Carolina. Starting at the ECU 40, the first play was a pass to Arkeel Newsome for a loss of 3, the type of play Diaco said he had never seen a team open a game with. Three plays later, Bryant Shirreffs was stopped shy of a first down.

"And the cookie crumbled for that group over there," Diaco said of the offense. "It just became kind of listless at that point. And with all the things I've seen so far, whether it be the finish of the Navy game, the finish of the Syracuse game [a failure to score a tying touchdown from the 2], the ineptness in the red zone, and on and on, the inability to score touchdowns …
"

And that's when, 15 minutes into a 25-minute opening statement Tuesday, Diaco announced Verducci's demotion.

"He's an absolute pro and a great, great guy and he's a man I have known since I was 14 years old," Diaco said. "He's a good man and he's got a strong football mind. And it's not all on him."

UConn is ranked 113th in rushing offense, 106th in total offense and 64th in passing offense. The Huskies were the last team in the nation to score a point in the first quarter of a game, which they finally did in Week 7.

The move did not help this year. UConn scored 13 points in their last 3 games, and got shellacked by Tulane this year.

This is something we can agree on.
I hope Drew gets an experienced QB coach that might have some OC experience .
Also a different WR coach might help him too
With the OC experience Mehringer had coming into this season ( 1 year as James Madison's HC) he had to handle too much for the experience he had and it shown all season long.
He had to work with talent level less than satisfactory, QBs not suited for system he was using , WR not a strength and an OL that couldn't be counted on.
I think all that was too much for Mehringer to handle while undergoing on the job training this season.
A sign of a good coach is leaning from his mistakes. Lets hope Drew shows us he has learned and does a better job.

EDIT: I meant to put ( 1 year as James Madison's OC not the HC I posted) that mistake was pointed out to me along with him being co-OC not the OC.

I have no idea what all these comparisons are illustrating other than Mehringer has a midpack competitive salary and far more than generous for his experience level.

I hate that damn play. Everyone in the world knows it's a pass. Why not leave a back there. A draw? An extra blocker? A screen? Nope straight drop back when they're rushing 6 against our 5. Just what is Rescigno supposed to do here? Is there a hot read he's missing? Still hard to make a hot read with linemen and D backs throwing you to the ground.

The poster I was replying to wrote in another post that you get what you pay for and that $400K is not a lot of money for a P5 coordinator. My point was to show him that Mehringer's salary of $450K is actually much higher than a lot of P5 coordinators and that Ash hired him because he thought he was qualified to do the job not because he didn't have the money.

Don't waste your time posting facts. They will just ignore them and then post the same inaccurate information in another thread later tonight or tomorrow.

Gotcha. No, I think he is grossly overpaid for his experience and contribution. Same for Ben McDaniels at 400k.

He was making a $100k last year coaching WRs in the Non Power 5 Conference.
Boy is he laughing all the way to the Bank, nice hire Ash.
He hasn't been laughing, that much is certain. He has been in pain, as has Ash, trying to work their way out of this abyss. Whether they pull it off or not remains to be seen, but laughter has not been part of his daily activities.
