As great as it seems to many, including players, to have this closeness, it also can be perceived as weak by some who do not buy into the many benefits possible.
Clearly, the morons who were involved in the home invasions could have cared less about what their actions could mean to their fellow players, coaches and school. They obviously could care less about the family philosophy.
I am wondering if Flood is too close to his players. Is their understanding blurred by this? Maybe that small number of players who go over the line do not fully understand his desire to help them and misinterpret it as a weakness.
I wonder if a lot of the high profile coaches may not have this problem by being more a stern disciplinarian instead of that of a friend who also happens to be the coach?

It's a great concept when you are doing things the right way and I have to say that through the years the players really seemed to buy into it. However right now it is a punchline.

Many programs around the country use the FAMILY montra.

This. It's done EVERYWHERE. Every team in the country talks about it, recruits talk about it when they go to visit other schools too.

Family also means sticking together when the chips are down.....something this fanbase has difficulty with.

Asked for the reasons for their commit I've noticed for what seems to be salient is that the family mantra was more real here than in other programs for recruits.

Maybe so, but clearly it's not all that important to the top recruits
