The defensive front seven we hoped would be better this year is not.

We know the secondary problems

So out defense, being counted on for being much better...is going to be shaky and not looking to be better in 2015

Our offensive line will improve this year as the year goes on. And we have two REALLY talented soph backs

The problem is laviano style and strength just isn't going to create big plays. It's gojng to be a lot of YAC...and we lost our top wide out and we can't find a way to get our #2 and #3 guys the ball. This means we need to sustain drives...and we haven't done that in three game. Our tds are all big play set up

And we have a Qb who can make more big plays but isn't getting a shot

Add it all up......the 2015
Season is in big trouble....like 3-9/4-8 trouble unless we improve a lot very quickly

3-9? 4-8? After tonight's obscenity, 1-11 seems more likely.

I was very disappointed in the lack of creativity on defense. We looked out leveraged at times, guys running around pre-snap confused... I won't even go into the missing tackles and lack of pass rush against a very poor OL.

Think we're past the cusp and on the way to the abyss. I don't see much of anything to like about this team right now.

Kansas and Army are not locks and what B1G team would we beat? Indiana is better than last year, Maryland maybe took a step back while we have taken 1000...

This season is irreperable...the seeds were sown when a bunch of boneheads went on a crime spree after the spring game and Flood sent dumb emails...

I think a lot of our fans are not grasping the gravity of the situation.

^ a lot of our fans do grasp the situation. The question is will the administration realize it after the season. I somewhat buy that Coach Flood was coaching for his job verse Maryland last year. Hermann has to straighten this out

After tonight's performance I have an uneasy feeling that the cusp may have already been crossed, and at this point it might simply be a matter of how far we fall and how hard we hit. -I hope I'm completely wrong, but I didn't see too much tonight that could be termed as encouraging.

I'm ashamed...no fire or spirit and each yr the talent disparity is widening...reality hit me in the face tonight...4 W's tops this yr and we need to do something NOW. The Schiano yrs spirit is evaporating along with our pride.

I agree with your post. Said it last week. Problem is with the YACS Laviano is not very accurate past 5 yds. Receivers constantly have to adjust to the ball and his soft ball throws led to no YACs this week nor last.(except screen passes). He is a game manager running a very risk adverse game plan yet has 4 turnover in 2 1/2 games. This is not the only problem with this team, however a critical one. From what I have seen he is not the future. If he is, the future is very bleak. Why would you decide to invest anymore time in him without seeing what you have on the bench? Only an imbecile would do this. Also why was Hicks not being feed the ball more, he was our hottest back tonight. Another idiotic move.

l think we should consider making a run at Matt Rhule and beat Franklin over the head with him.As much as i like KF as a man its getting embarassing.

Just now you think we're on the cusp of disaster?

The "cusp of disaster" was looming since a position coach with a trail of destruction behind him and hideous recruiting was made HC. Recruits were saying out loud the Flood team left them flat. OL recruiting at RU is sad sack city for BE team never mind a B1G team. Can't blame Laviano so much now because RU can't develop QBs for squat. Cardale Jones would be a TE at RU

Yep

The lack of competitive fire was appalling. Playing to not only lose, but to try and keep it close is a loser mentality. We chose a QB because he is a game manager, whatever that means, instead of developing the guy with the bigger skill set. Astounding that a coach would make such a decision when they both are equal in performance.

The style of play is so predictable. Meatheads calling meathead plays. Except on D where we don't attack and line up wrong.

The staff is indicative of our administration. Amateurs across the board at every level.

It doesn't matter what our fans think, it only matters what Barchi and Hermann think, but trust me, our fans have read what is going on and saw that game last night, our fans do grasp the gravity of the situation.

Change will not happen unless we have real Leadership. For as much crap as I have taken over criticizing Barchi, does anybody really think this is the right person to Lead a Big 10 school in BOTH academics and athletics, someone who understands the value of competing at a higher level and the returns investing in the program could Bring?

Rutgers wants us to invest, but isn't willing to do it themselves. What message does that send?

Shack, my friend, we've been talking about this for months. I don't know WHY people thought our D was suddenly going to be good, why our O wasn't going to miss a step - or even "be better," despite losing 225+ starts "up the gut" - or why we'd win a game in which our QB was starting on the road, for the 1st time ever, in front of 103,000+ fans, with about 98,000 of them cheering for the home team.

We really never threatened to get a TD the entire game. Scary.

I was wondering what Shack was going to say. I was trying to think of some positives but couldn't come up with any. This game was a slap to the face. I'm stunned at what I witnessed. Was the staff on vacation this past week?

Ultimately the BOG will make the call. It will be on JH to get the donors and Barchi to merely sign off, so I will reserve judgment until that time. If for some reason Flood is not canned, I will agree with you.

It will not happen. They don't have the money. Why wouldn't they take B10 money to make the move for a new coach? I can go on and on but I know this for sure. After you joined the B10 Christie was clever in trimming back State Appropration forcing the school to raise tuition and using some B10 money for the general budget. Before you say impossible look into it because it's perfectly legal. The medical school merger has created one huge financial mess after another. Be logical If all was fiscally copacetic wouldn't Coach Flood have been replaced two years ago? You don't have the money and honestly you won't have the money for at least three more years. Even if you fire Flood you're going to bring in a low level Ham & Egger at best.

I'm not sure what was worse, taking a FG when down by 21 with clock winding down, OR punting from the Penn St 37 when scoring opportunities were going to be rare (and put in the end zone to make matters worse, why no angle kick?).
Way , way way too conservative.

Flood possibly could've been replaced two years ago but one donor decided Flood was his guy and got him extended. There was a thread asking what does Flood do well? My response was, he knows how to make people like him. That is literally why he still has a job.

Getting back to the season at hand

It was really really bothersome that we looked a combination of emotionless out there with a gameplan that seemed to try to keep us in the game and not to win the game

How often do you lose a game by 3 tds and don't try a deep go route once?

We are down carroo. We did little to get Patton the ball. We did little to get grant the ball. Grant hands have proven relaible THIS year. We should have been dialing up middle screens to him to stop the PSU blitz to the cow
Came home. Our game plan was to shorten the game and see if we can get it to the 4th quarter close. I did not see a gameplan that would have got us 30 points last night. Hell of a way to come into a game against your biggest rival and your confrence opener. No trick plays...no reverses or end arounds. Nothing to try to change the game to try to win...right out of the gate

We have depth at running back. And we can't find a way to get more than one running back on the field

And...anyone notice after three games we haven't blocked a kick? Really have been close maybe once or twice

We are a mess and getting messier by the week

Hermann wasn't even allowed to handle the Flood investigation and has been invisible since the first story broke. She is no more in control of the athletic department than you or I. Only Barchi can effect the changes the program needs to be successful. It remains to be seen whether he has the will to bring in an AD with experience handling the media and a football program and let that AD hire a proper coach.

I am afraid he will leave the AD and get another cheap coach at Wal-Mart.

No more Schiano coached guys. How many Schiano coaches? That's where the guts, spirit, imagination and toughness resided. How many of the top coaches have the mantra of "nice guy?"

Rutgers FB has regressed, in a spritual sense, to the pre-Schiano days. We'll get some good guys, but not enough. Not enough for any depth for sure. How can a recruit want to be a part of what they saw last night?

Why can't the administration mortgage our financial future. B1G contracts are in place, and mega-payday next year for the league. Banks can see the lucrative maney down the road for Rutgers. It'll cost more to try to build from ground zero if they let the situation continue to deteriorate.

Nuts

Here is the thing.

We thought we had hope on linebacker (two of three returning with a 5th year Lewis) for improvement...I don't see better linebadker play

We thought we had hope for better dline play with what we had returning...and young players stepping up...I don't see better dline play

Actually...the secondary, of all positions, has been a pleasant surprises with what it could be with losing four starters...

The defensive position groups being counted on for improvement ...has not

That is troubling

The secondary? We gave up 500 yards passing last week and PSU hasn't had a passing game all season. Let's see what happens with they go up against MSU, OSU, Nebraska, Indiana, et al, it could be ugly. Even the LB's, I kept saying I didn't like our depth there - at all - and Lewis may be a bust. If he's really our 3rd best LB we're in big, big trouble, with that group.

Yes, "troubling" all around.

I chuckle every time I see this thread title pop up again . . . "on the cusp"?????

Pretty sure we are beyond th cusp at this point.

We will beat Kansas and Army. Maybe Maryland at home but that's it. Season was over before last night's game IMO and I think the Schiano/Flood Era should be over along with it.

Time for new blood and a complete overhaul of the program.

Nuts

The Defense last week was torched by wassu bexause we refused to blitz. No secondary can stop a team for 3 plus seconds when you don't get pressure. We lost the pass game at the mid level bexause of linebacker play in space

This week...the secondary played solid except for the Wr screen game and you know that frosh corners will have some support issues on that....and we adjusted to that

We are losing games on defense on the front seven more than a replacement secondary against the teams we can match with

We can't match against Michigan state and ohio state so nothing matters there

I actually think the silver lining in the suspensions is that Austin and Adams are going to be excellent, excellent corners for us in a year or two. They just need seasoning and are getting the playing time now they otherwise may not have had if Dailey, Barnwell, Boggs and Peele were still on the team. Hester was slowed by injuries in fall camp but I think he will also be a very good safety when all is said and done. I know Hamilton has been out and looked really limited last night but the front 7 outside of Gause have been very disappointing and this unfortunately includes Longa.

I'm just not seeing the "improvement," at all, and they really weren't tested last night. Not really their fault, they're freakin' young, but nonetheless.

I need to forget about this game for 24 hours.
