The root of our QB problem....

Laviano's problem and hence OUR problem is that in practice he makes the best decisions and the best plays because he is wearing a green jersey.... Coaching staffs continue handing him the keys because when the pass rush is not for real, mentally, he can focus and is pretty effective as a QB and game manager.

However, Laviano in a real game is a VERY different player and decision maker, because the pressure is real. Its very obvious when you watch his feet even before the pocket breaks down. He plays nervous and is not even conscious of it. When there is a real pass rush coming he mentally panics in the pocket, causing him to miss wide open receivers 10+ yards downfield consistently, pass when he should run, run when he should pass, and generally make poor decisions. In this offense you NEED not only a QB who has some mobility but you need a QB who plays calm.

Find the guy on the roster who panics the least under a real pass rush, and start that guy in the game.,....

He has the ability to be under control and make better decisions in practice than the others. He's got a new head coach and OC convinced he's the best option.
He's beat out two QB's on the roster in Gio and Allen who have the skill set to run a power spread offense correctly.
It's mind boggling actually.

If we could take the green jerseys off in practice, Laviano would not win the competition. Laviano doesn't have the temperament, the brain, or the arm to play QB effectively at this level.

He might be a great QB for Patriot league or D2 team..... but we are going to suck until he is replaced. Against anyone with a decent defense he has exactly 3 touchdowns in 8 games.

We've had 8 games against Top 70 defenses since he has been QB. 7 of those he has thrown 0 touchdowns. the one exception was vs MSU in what was probably his best ever game.

Well, we have tried everything with the best guy in practice except sitting him when he plays poorly, maybe that will snap him out of the game day funk and unleash the practice predator on Saturdays,

Yup, the amount of indecision out there, by Laviano, was frosh-like IMHO.

Of course, we may find out the others are even worse under pressure, particularly since, with our OL, it seems that pressure is gonna be a constant against the better teams this year. Regardless, I'm hoping we see either Zach or Gio in the 2nd half against Howard.

One thing, though, I would have rather seen them put in Gio when they were running the Wild Knight (good god, I thought we had seen the last of that!) instead of Baily.

Oh, and I still think UW should have been flagged on that hit when Laviano slid.

The root of our QB problem has been our utter inability to recruit out of HS qb's that were recruited by a bunch of top 20 type teams - ie, highly talented quarterbacks. Other than Savage and Oden (I think) there have never been any. Full stop.

I love how its become message board "fact" that Laviano is a practice warrior who cant perform on game day. People simply refuse to understand the fact that he is the most talented QB on the team. People calling for Gio, and Allen, it comical. If they could play, they would. There is a reason Laviano has a long leash...its because no one else can play.

Granted, Laviano has flaws. Of course. But the biggest problem our team had last year, and had yesterday, is that the QB has absolutely no time to do anything on a great deal of plays.

You have know way of knowing who would win the job.

He is an average QB for sure...but the O-Line is worse which means he can't even get to his average ceiling. Gio is the backup for crying out loud and he can't even throw...Lav has a cannon compared to Gio.

You may be correct that no one else on our team can play, but CL is every bit as responsible for our offensive woes as the OL.
You could put CL behind the same line as JT Barett, Cardale Jones and Braxton Miller played behind and CL and that OSU offensive line would struggle, simply because CL is a bad QB.

I won't go as far as to say I refuse to believe we don't have anyone better, but I will say it's hard to believe.

The OSU offensive line would struggle? Nonsense.

This !!!! and BTW ........ This!!!!

I am watching ND and the QB has all day to throw, by doing this he goes through all his reads and the WR can run their routes. We can do neither.

Not sure how much we find out this week against Howard. One thing to keep an eye on against New Mexico is whether our WR can get separation from the DB's. I thought this was an issue for all of them except Caroo last year. While the pass protection was spotty, there were times where he had time and the question is whether no one was open or he just missed them. Hard to tell on TV. Of course if we are going to throw quick screens to the WR's then it becomes more a question of their ability to make a tackler miss and if the other receiver can block effectively. The only receiver I have any confidence in is Grant right now.

Not taking away anything from
CL here.

I think we need q change because if there was one and only one thing Washington could have seen on tape heading into this game was CL. Everything else about this team was an unknown except him. I consistently watched his feet every series and I could tell he was panicking a lot back there. I know our Oline dos not help him out that much but the indecision and flat footed plays were hard to wqtch. I hope th correct that with him now that they have seen real game action.

Hate to say it but at this point we know what we get here with CL, so it may be time for q change and create more unknowns for teams. The next two games give us some breathing room to try out some new things.

we did not lose this game because of Laviano. Washington's team speed and athleticism was the difference. And their defense is excellent. And Jake Browning is an excellent quarterback.....And our special teams play was awful.

Good QBs in college make their OLs look better. It's amazing how good your OL looks when the tempo is "Hike .... 1 ..... 2 ..... ball out/QB run" all day.

It's really hard to be a good college QB when your OL are pushed into your passing lanes.

I've been hearing the same excuses for years

Those QB's can run, avoid the rush and force contain

can Allen and gio play d too?
Other than getting burnt by that blazingly fast guy, the D was not the main problem. I think we will see that is the case.

As for QB.. while suspect the haters may be right, only the coaches will know for sure.

Guys

we are lacking in sone many places including at Qb that our offense is a mess

It ain't the X's and O's...it's the jimmy and joes

Recruit recruit and recruit. The players to start fixing this sign in early February

The point of the post was that CL is not a quarterback who we can win with in games against real defenses with a real pass rush because he panics in the pocket. We have 5 other scholarship QBs on the roster who dont get any chance to show they can deal with that better in a game, because CL is so much better in practice than he is in the game.

if saturday's game was any indicator we are going to need a QB with poise in the pocket. CL just does not have poise mentally in a real game scenario. But we aren't going to find out if anyone else on the roster might be better at handling it in a game unless they get a chance. OL play sucked yesterday, but CL missed several downfield open receivers and has a huge problem with locking onto people after the snap. There has to be someone else who doesn't do these particular things that might give us a better chance in games. CL is obviously the best practice QB - 2 staffs have said so. But after his consistent failure on the real stage, isn't it time to at least experiment?

The defense gave up 24 points in one quarter. Other than whatever is not meaningful. Any team that gives up 24 points in an opening quarter will not win.
