Bellarmine wins Atlantic Sun championship to make NCAA's.
Nevermind! My daughter said they are not eligible.
Didn't see any of the game.
Are they still the team that doesn't dribble?

Bellarmine Not Eligible
Transitioning to Division I.
According to ESPN Stats & Information research, Bellarmine is the first men's team in the past 25 seasons to win its conference tournament while being ineligible for postseason play.

They aren’t eligible for the NCAA…winning tonight means that Jacksonville State (who lost in the semi as the top seed) dances.

its terrible that Jacksonville does not get the bid

Bellermine should not have been in the tournament

i believe its their first year in the conference/ncaa so they were going to have to sit out a ncaa appearance by rule

Moving up in competition shouldn't make you ineligible. That seems crazy. Raw deal for Bellermine

Jacksonville does get the bid. Bellarmine ineligible.

Why aren't they eligible?
Teams that move up are ineligible for their first 3 years as a “transition period”…most conferences don’t allow those teams in their tournament. But the A Sun did, on the premise that if one of their ineligible teams won it, the bid would go to the regular season champ.

This is year 2 of 3 for them, so they are still ineligible next season, and finally eligible in 2024.

If the NIT can scoop them up, I think they might. They are eligible to play in postseason tournaments (they did last year), but not sure how the NCAA’s ownership of the NIT impacts them.

This has been the case for awhile. I still don't get why it is that way.

If you are good enough to win it in year 1, why do they have this rule? I must be missing something as to the reasoning. Maybe someone here can give the justification.

Best of Luck,

It makes more sense if you drop down a level that you aren't eligible for their tournament bc you have a roster of higher level recruits

I am a Bellarmine grad and this is their second year as D-1. Last year they lost the championship game to Liberty. I think they must wait until their fourth year in D-1 to be eligible for the NCAA. They went to the Final Four of D-2 I think about 4 times and they won the D-2 National Championship in 2011 when I drove to Springfield, MA to watch them win. They are pretty good and usually have very good three point shooters.

nice video... the X's and O's portion.. I will link it cued... was fun. Would love to see some of that "scissors action"

Scott Van Pelt went kind of crazy about it on Sportscenter last night and said that it was ridiculous rule and he doesn't understand it at all.

I would like to see in writing the "sound" reasoning behind not letting them make it.

They moved to D1 last year I believe. Ineligible for post season until 5 years. Seems like a classic NCAA rule. Arbitrary and unfair.

I thought of coach (knights1212) as soon as I heard this story last night. Way to go and wait til next year.
