When Ash was first hired, I admittedly was disappointed, because I wanted someone who could win right away, like Miami's hire of Marc Richt. With Ash's hiring, the school basically said, "We're hitting the Reset button" and its going to be a while before we win at the level we want. With so many first year coaches and completely new systems, and ultimately so much change, we are not going to be competitive with the best teams just yet. Year 3 is where hopefully we can see improvement, and hopefully we are where we want to be in Year 5, where were regularly going to bowl games. I think these are realistic expectations. Ultimately, Ash's hiring will prove to be the correct one, imo.

Al, with Jonathan Lewis, Bo Melton , and others coming, we will be competitive in 2018 and good by 2019.

After being a fan since my freshman year in 1971, I just hope I live long enough to see a conference championship game w Rutgers in it.

It's about both talent level and coaching. If Caroo was still on this team with Martin and Grant, the offense would be much better cause they make up for Laviano's weakness - too a point. Need to relax and give Ash some time to recruit.

Who have they played ? Really ? Even RU with no QB, no WR, and no TE might be 4-0 w that schedule

They { Maryland} are beating a 2 win Purdue team right now.... thrashing them. Do you think we can beat Maryland ?
Please

By year three we should know if RU's on track.
This year will be blamed on Flood and probably rightfully so.
Next season if improvement isn't showing, then it might be time to start wondering
about the coaching staff's ability to make RU into a program we can be proud of but still early enough in their tenure to give them the benefit of doubt

I think we can beat Maryland. Barring too many more injuries, I think we will beat Maryland. And I only project us winning 3-5 games this season, so it's not like I'm a particularly optimistic fan.

After seeing the way OSU handled RU, optimism is something I need to find .

Richt would struggle to get 6 wins with this team. We are in an entirely different situation than Miami. Miami had 4 and 5 stars all over the place, Golden was just a bum.

I'm rarely optimistic about anything. I figure it will take between 3-5 years before this program can even start to be regularly competitive against a team as good as OSU. And that will require some real luck along the way too.

We can win some big games between now and then. But regularly competitive is a big leap for us. Hell, at our best as a program in the modern era, we couldn't even beat West Virginia. We never even outright won a pretty weak Big East conference.

Some will surely find that to be a negative attitude. And maybe it is. But I also think it's realistic and I'm prepared to be patient as long as I see ongoing improvement. I had zero expectations of seeing improvement in today's game. OSU is just a bridge too far. Michigan might be as well. But in the first four games, there was definite improvement. Hell, even in the first quarter today, I could see some improvement - then, as Ash said in his press conference, the wheels came off.

In the meantime, I'm not going to vent my spleen week in and week out when we have bad games against great opposition. Because it's entirely out of my control. Not one thing I can do about it.

So I focus on the few positives I can find and enjoy the process. It helps to have great folks to tailgate with and lots of fun people here on the board to BS with.

Bored, I've been waiting and watching long enough.
My Saturday's will no longer be scheduled around RU…life is to short

Same here, no reason to waste a day getting aggravated watching the same old same old.

I gave them my time early on but I just can't stand to watch that horrid QB any longer so I flipped it off and got a lot of yard-work accomplished, went for a run and then enjoyed a coffee while watching other games.

There is no such thing as a five-year program. It is now.

Alabama, OSU and Michigan don't play by that rule.

If we do, then we lose.

We simply don't belong in the BIG. We have gotten worse.

Oh pee is way to optimistic. Ash needs at least 10 years before we can expect a winning record. We need to be patient and realistic.

Scheduling weekends around RU FB is a personal choice, before Schiano there were many RU fans that didn't.
Once RU started winning, bandwagon was filling up fast and some who didn't schedule before, started to make time for RU.
It's hard to put in your schedule something you feel might bring you down,no one should be bashed for that. Maybe you will find something positive and not feel so let down by the end of this season , hopefully next week against Michigan , but realistically the Illi game in 2 weeks has the best shot at giving hope to us RU fans about the Scarlet Knights chances for the rest of this season.

For one thing, Richt would keep the prostyle and recruit us a qb. This would make a huge difference in our competitiveness. That said, I'm in it for the long haul and will patiently wait to see results.

Btw: we'd be competitive with Miami at every position save for the qb position.

nah, you lose your sense of ownership and pride and feel like a bandwagoner later...just ask an original Mets fan how it felt in '69'

LOL. There is not a single position RU comes close to Miami. Not even in the same stratosphere.

Saban couldn't win with this team. Flood was mimicking Yankee Division recruitng for a good stretch - while many were defending him I should add. "The players like him" etc. Lots of sweet nothings when the recruiting story told all..

You guys quitting the team are sooo full of it. Saturday will come and you will be tuned in waiting for the upset. What the offense currently lacks is speed. Get two fast wide receivers, the coaches will be able to recruit the guys they need.

We're not upsetting Michigan. There's no Brady Hoke on the other sideline.

I said from day 1 that we need to give it 5 to 7 years . No shortcuts will get it done.

Your most lucid post ever, Al.

It's a process people. If you can't handle it, check back in a few years.

Yet they have not come close to playing a team like OSU and Washington. At this moment very hard to compare
No they haven't. And I hardly believe they will be able to compete against OSU and UW. But then again, they aren't as hopeless on O as we are.

I think you're right. But 5-7 years to get where? To be able to beat Iowa? Sure. To compete with OSU? Don't think so.

Money will help and when full share comes, excuses for not being better will be harder
to claim.
Rutgers isn't going to move up the ladder quickly and that we all should have expected when RU went B1G.
5 years sounds to long, but might be valid.

This has to be looked at in the context of the dumpster fire that Flood left this program in.It will take at least 3 years to even get this program to the mid B10 level. Looking at the athletes that OSU has compared to Rutgers athletes is anybody really surprised at the outcome?

Rutgers has been blown out by 2 likely playoff teams. Did anybody see Washington blow out Stanford last night even more so then Rutgers? They lost a very winnable game against Iowa and beat up on the 2 teams that they were supposed to.

So we have a 5 year build but we have the same talent as Miami except QB? Yea, makes sense.
