Thursday's NCAA tourney games discussion thread

Michigan vs. Montana is really ugly. Why couldn't Michigan play this bad vs RU? Wagner and the entire team look nothing like they did at MSG. This is hard to believe.

They'll blame it on the xtra week off.
Nobody plays bad vs. RU. Had msu, or purdue given us one avg game we would have taken a gme or two.

Upsets for Friday's games-

Murray state over West Virginia

New Mexico state over clemson

Michigan had some big time rust on offense, but the defense brought their A game after the first 4 minutes. Montana had 10 points in the first 3+ minutes. They had 37 the next 36+ minutes. Now up to #3 nationally best D on KenPom which is some kinda insane when you consider the last 30 years of John Beilein coached teams.

Buffalo hit 15-30 three point shots in beating up Arizona. Kills my bracket but I don't care since I am one who believes we haven't heard the last about the level of misconduct out in Tucson. Ayton and Trier declare for the draft after the game and Atkins is supposedly going too so all five starters are gone and they have no commits right now for next year.

The result is just another example of how important it is to have some shooters. If Buffalo can assemble a group that can have that type of success against Arizona is there any legitimate reason why we cannot? How long before you start hearing Oats name for better jobs. Bobby Hurley leveraged an NCAA appearance into Arizona State and I don't think even won a game. A guy like this might be the best a school like UConn can hope to attract.

BTW I like New Mexico State as well today and think Charleston might take Auburn

You know, watching many of these games today, I couldn't help but notice that most of these teams played worse defense than RU and couldn't rebound anywhere near as well as our guys. If our team could score like these other guys, we'd be a solid sweet sixteen contender. Just need two scorers. We're so close...
Long suffering Rutgers fans have been waiting to see multiple scorers on the court and it hasn't happened on a consistent basis for decades.

I also saw a lot of WTF plays like fouling late in the shot clock or when seemingly having an insurmountable lead late in the game situations, which normally have me killing our guys for not being very smart. It is pervasive throughout the college game.

oh my after making just one of 2 Loyola forces turnover and will have the ball and can hold for last shot

so this guy Towns is from Edison played at FDU and then transferred to Loyola

Marques Townes played at St Joes. His cousin (who played at plainfield/st benedicts) plays men's league with me and my buddies. He was hyped

Arizona was ugly. It’s as if they had no scouting report on their opponent. How do you keep two center footers out there that long? Buffalo prepared very well for that game. 15 for 30 from three helped, but they got themselves a lot of open looks. Btw the Pac12 is awful. They went 1-8 in bowl games and 0-3 in the tournament

Speaking of kenpom we keep moving up. We are up to #132, 3 slots better than where we ended the year AND 3 slots better than last year.

PROGRESS!!!!

Oats can land at St Bonnies say if Schmidt gets scooped up by UConn or can land at URI if Hurley bolts...and that is true Hurley didnt even win a game at Buffalo in the tourney and parlayed that into the ASU job

check out the rpi now:weary:

RPI is for losers.

In all reality kenpom is a better metric of looking how good a team is, BUT not sure it belongs at all in any discussion with the NCAA tournament committee. RPI is binary (win or loss). Kenpom doesn't care if you win or lose. it only cares about cumulative point differential and then matches that to a strength of schedule.

The NCAA should not even metion kenpom's existence. The minute there is a whiff the committee uses kenpom you could/should see team's running up the score when possible.

He literally hired a defensive coordinator

This is true but part of Hurley landing the ASU job was because of his name.

The committee used Kenpom 2 or 3 tournaments ago.
