To the poster arguing with me about layups last week….

Are you taking tabs of acid prior to each game?
Of course not. Layups are missed everywhere. It isn't a Rutgers thing. Yes our missed layups are a byproduct of the players that take them. What can really be done about it? I am also worried about missed free throws and missed three pointers.

There is still a long list of concerns that i have. Missing layups don't make the list

If you are Steve Pikiell today.

What are you going to spend time on in practice?

What possibly can be done to help a player finish better at the rim?

I'd bet you dollars-to-donuts that, over the last several years, we ranked among the WORST in the nation taking shots within 5-feet of the rim and THAT, my friend, is the problem. "layups are missed everywhere" is bullshit. P5 kids SHOULD NOT be missing the kind of layups that our kids miss on a consistent basis.

when my daughter was little the travel coach brought in a giant 5 foot stuffed bear and would wack the girls with it during layup line

With inflation, donuts almost cost a dollar.

The Krispy Kreme donut I had leaving Mohegan Sun was stunningly delicious. Made the trip worth it.

So what is the actionable idea to fix this perceived problem.

Seems to me that missing layups would often be about losing focus near the point of release, which is easy to do, and sometimes about technique (taking the wrong angle, letting go of the ball too late, poor eye discipline, unwillingness to absorb contact and draw a foul, etc.). I gotta think all of that, and more related to taking good layups, must be coachable.

“RU couldn’t buy a bucket at the end. Even missed two layups. Weird.”

Comment from a coworker, Miami fan, former d3 player.

Nuff said.

It’s an attitude .. don’t go up weak! Strong to rim and dunk if you can. Hyatt should have. Instead he flipped up weak sauce. Bunnies from 5 feet are also mental . “Alligator arms”..

Agree that this team has a real problem converting layups. I think it stems from the fact that we have recruited superior athletes who aren't always superior basketball players. We just haven't been able to recruit the best players that are both smooth intuitive scorers and able to bang at the Big10 level.

I disagree that this has been a problem for years. Geo, Ron, Myles, Montez, Eugene, Young, Yeboah and others had no problem making layups. I'd be interested to see stats on that because it doesn't match my recollection.

Maybe, it's as simple as first year starters putting too much pressure on themselves, playing tight down low, trying to do everything right until Paul and Caleb are full healthy and back in the starting lineup.

Then don't watch if you are so upset....I think D was more of a problem against Miami.

How about a simple fundamental drill. Keep your head up and do not lose focus on the rim . For years, before dunking was a thing, guys drove hard and keep head up through contact and even used the glass effectively . We should not only be making uncontested layups but must go stronger through contact and keep head up putting it up and convert more and ones than we do. It has be drilled better.

Man I would pay good money to watch some boomers run these guys through layup drills

Have you watched Mag or Hyatt take layups through contact. They never keep their head up and put ball up on the glass. You must not watch much of our team. But start now and maybe you will pick it up

Whoa, don’t be blaming boomers. The RAC is full of fans of all ages who have never played basketball - or maybe stopped at 5th grade - yet think they have good advice for our coach.
