Yeah, baby. [banana][banana][banana] Love this kid. He has moxie.

"As soon as the first practice started they got me booted up on the ThunderCloud (video system) so I could watch what they were doing and I watched every practice," Oden said. "I went to the spring game and I watched the spring game when I got back home. I carefully studied who was ahead of me and who I need to beat out."

"I don't think I'm going to be red-shirted, if you ask me," Oden said. "But who knows?"

Oden, who plans to major in chemical engineering, said he was able to pick up on Rutgers' offense by watching video from spring practice. He knows there will be an adjustment to college football, but he's ready for his opportunity.

Never liked the word "moxie", but otherwise solid post!

And that quickly I have a new favorite player. I love his attitude and willingness to work hard. Eventually, he'll be a player. Hopefully sooner than later.

And based on what I've seen; both from him and the others I see no reason why he can't challenge. Having said that I wouldn't be mad if he redshirted.

Chemical engineering is a very tough major it may be in his best interest to redshirt just to graduate with that very demanding degree in 5 years.

I hear medical marijuana helps with short term weight gain, would be helpful in this case.

What have you seen from Oden? His Hudl tape? True freshman QB's are rarely successful. Unless there are injuries he will redshirt.

It says he's now up to 185, but at 6'5 that's still very light. Not a twig anymore but he's still got a lot of work to do in the weight room before he steps foot on the field.

Brad Kaaya comes to mind. About the same height, but about 20 pounds heavier. But he is an exception. Thought Johnny Manziel played freshman year, but he redshirted.

I will say it again . I really hope he redshirts . I really hope we have a guy that's in his fourth year of college football that can beat out a kid that is finishing high school .
Seems like the kid has a great attitude , just don't want him thrown to the wolves as a true frosh.

I think what it comes down to is our record. If we're struggling in the middle of the season, I think Ash will give the freshman a shot. Mainly because if Laviano or Rettig don't get it done, they won't be the starting QB next year. I think Ash is smart enough to at least try to find out what he has. If Tylin shows he can play in practice, I think he will want to give him a shot if QB1 and QB2 struggle. The plan is to eventually build the offense around him if he's good enough. There's no point in waiting until week 1 in 2017.

I think it depends. If it looks like he can compete you let him go and put him in if and when it makes sense. If Laviano and Rettig seem to have a handle on things then red shirting Oden may make sense. He can bulk up, get acclimated to a tough major and maybe eventually be that 5th year senior QB that leads Rutgers to a New Years Day Bowl Victory.

Josh Rosen is a very talented and special kid.
Kaaya was also a kid beyond his years.

All based on evaluations of QB play. QB play can be more than adequate and the record could be bad. This is a flawed team with lots of question marks. LBs, special teams, wide receivers. QB play is not totally responsible for team's record. Defense needs steep improvement. Etc, etc.

If I'm Oden, I would want to get on the field ASAP, his real competition is not ahead of him, it's behind him in the form of a 6-3 210 Lewis. If he redshirts and have 0 game experience by this time next year, there is a strong possibility he may not see the field for awhile, I would do my absolute best in the next 3 months both in the weight room and understanding of the play book to challenge for the starting role, and I would definitely talk to the nutritional staff about medical marijuana.

What's most demanding about it is trying to cram 144 or so credits into 4 years, while most majors are 124, iirc. So, yeah, 5 years makes sense, especially for a football player, who invests so much time and energy into that activity. Subject matter isn't that hard if you're good at math and chemistry, just like other majors aren't that hard if you're good at the required subjects.

Based on his film and they mediocrity of the guys he's competing against, if he's a quick study, I believe he'll compete for playing time and may well see the field this year.

So we go with Retting or Laviano all year, do we keep the senior QB or ditch them in 18?

The best move for a new coach with a new system is develop the QB for your system. No one's going blame Ash if we struggle this year, getting an experienced QB that matches your offense for next year should be the goal.

I'm of the belief Odin will not start game one but will have serious playing time in 16.

1)His weight won't be a problem. By the time we break camp he will be as heavy as many two way QBs.

2)I have long said that although we have talent in many areas alot of the weaknesses will be exposed in this option spread offense we are running. However the option spread does hide some weaknesses as well, the most important being a running QB who is still learning the system. Its great to have a guy that when he gets in trouble runs for the first down instead of taking a sack or worse throws an int. I can site many many many examples where a freshman with Oden's skillset started on a college team.

There's no argument that freshman QB's rarely experience success.

But I think if there is an offensive system in which a freshman QB has a chance to succeed, this is it. Especially when that QB played in essentially the same offense in high school (based, at least, on the game tapes I've seen of Tylin).

It doesn't seem to me that there are a lot of pass pattern options in this offense in which the receivers and QB need to be "on the same page" and requires both of them to read the defense. Experience is critical to running pass patterns like that.

This offense features short swing passes. Or a quick decision whether to hand the ball to a running back or keep it based on the reaction of the defensive end, etc.

I think he will be our starter... next season, not this one. He needs to beef up first.

But make no mistake about it he is the future along with other future recruits.

My expectations for Ash's first year as HC is that he will be trying a lot of different rotations. As for a true freshman QB, I say let him get his feet wet in the classroom instead of on the field.
