Certianly expected a better game, but this was always mission impossible. Everything is new, and few of these players were recruited for this system.

It's going to be 3 years before wins come. At the earliest.

I'm interested in seeing progress, effort, recruiting.

And Oden. It will be growing pains, but that kid needs to play by mid season.

This is dead on [thumb2]. Some need to step back from the ledge, it will take time to rebuild from the Flood era.

Maybe coaches were already thinking that when they picked Laviano. Who wants to start a young QB in a massacre with no protection? This is a gap year. Chucking bench guys into the wood chipper wasn't going to do anything constructive. No sense in coaching frantic.

Ash gets a two year pass from me without looking at the scoreboard. Just want to those three things listed.

Year 3 I start paying attention to scores. Saw very little of this game so can't comment on those three, but I expect us to get better as the season rolls on, though it won't be seen on the scoreboard.

Recruit recruit recruit.

My takeaways:
Once the defense settled down, they were much better than last year. Tackling was better from the start.
This may well be the best conditioned team I have ever seen Rutgers field
Offensive line reminds me of the year Captain Kirk was OC. Switch to spread will take time for them to grow into.
Special teams coverage was not good.
QB is the same as last year.

I didn't expect it to be this lopsided. I did see improvements during the course of the game on defense. I expect to see incremental improvements in all three aspects of the game over the course of the year.
Skeletor had better start calling some blitz packages, and Bobby Deniro needs to get ST coverages squared.
New schemes take more than a training camp to get ingrained. The assignments need to be second nature. Right now the guys are still having to think too much and not acting out of instinct yet. That takes time.

I still think they can win six games. I won't cry if they don't. This season's goal is establishing the playbook. That and recruiting, recruiting, recruiting

Shocked at how many people have already rendered the verdict. This will be a long haul.

O line was bad in pass protection.
ST was on par with o line.

D line 4 man rush was not getting pressure on the QB.

I miss the aggressive D blitzes.

you guys are ok with not having wins till year 3? lol...some of you have such low expectations

coaches coach who they have, they fit the scheme and play to the talent and players they have....simple as that because in today's game, no one is getting a pass for several years, not at today's salaries and expenses

Ash doesn't have the DB talent required to run his version of the cover-4. At least not against teams with an alpha receiver.

He doesn't have the pass rush from the front 4 either.

QB has already been covered elsewhere. Would just add that the OL didn't do Chris any favors.

Absolutely. Football ain't basketball. It takes time to recruit and develop players.

And by time, I mean years. Certainly more than 1 class and a training camp will produce. If someone can't stomach that and take comfort in small steps along the way, I'd move on for awhile. The whole roster needs an overhaul. Flood left a roster full of players not suited for Ash's system and average talent level at best. None of that gives you a chance to waltz into the stadium of a top 15 team and win. You can argue he should have kept the pro set to play to the players strengths, but that is short term thinking and still wouldn't produce a win today. Best to show recruits what you want to be and have them buy in. Keeping the score a little closer matters not right now. There are bigger things at play.

We have a long way to go in upgrading talent and implementing the spread offense. That's just reality, and personally speaking, why I believe we see Oden sooner rather than later.

It's all about the future, and that isn't tomorrow in football.

Everyone hates the process. But that's what it is.

Love your positivity, man.

I also agree 100%. New coaches need time. Ash can get it done. He just needs time.

It's reality. I feel the same about Ash now as I did before game 1 against a top 15 opponent on the road.

Just want to see those three things listed at the end of the season.

Did I mention recruiting, lol?

I think in the old Big East you could win with mediocre talent. Kelly did that at Cincy, But RU is now in premier league in the nation and playing top programs. All the butt whippings the past few years have shown RU really needs to close a wide gap that just got wider under Flood and Co. Lots of guys played for RU today who wouldn't even be recruited by RU opponents no less starting for them. RU looked like a SUNY school that should be playing Buffalo or Albany

I wanted Herm Edwards as a Coach. . . just saying, we needed an absolute stick of dynamite as a recruiter. Herm is that.

Meanwhile, there's no way, that Coach Ash gets three years before we look at the scores.

It's early, but it's already getting late.

Agree with everything you said @Caliknight except on Oden. Let the kid put on 20 lbs before we throw him in the fire. He really could use a redshirt. Might as well let Laviano take the brunt of it and then have Oden be a lock to start next season or Lewis if he surprises.

I think KP strength program got them bigger and stronger...the difference today was speed. You have to recruit speed you can't teach or develop that.

Absolutely. Can it from the highlights alone. Clearly much faster.

Oden needs to grow up fast.

I agree, I had higher expectations this year as I got caught up with the excitement. UW will be one of the best and fastest teams we play all year. I still think 6-6 is doable but not as confident. Either way, I'm not expecting a bowl this year or next.

At Rutgers we need to redshirt our frosh QB, even though he ran the exact same offense in High School. despite the fact that it's a lost season.

Meanwhile, Big time programs are able to play True Frosh.

Truth is simple, Laviano is not the answer. Neither is Oden.

and it only gets worse, because this team is as talented as Rutgers is going to be for the foreseeable future.

I totally agree; however, it is difficult to mask the deficiencies in the secondary. Last year we ran a Cover 6 shell under Rossi - that is what you run to defend a Hail Mary pass. That is pretty bad.

On 3 long TD passes - the safeties were way late in providing help over the top and as I mentioned in another thread, you have to adjust your coverages when dealing with a burner like that Ross kid. I think the staff adjusted in the second half.

This was a learning experience for this staff, because to truly discover your strengths and weaknesses you need to see how your guys play in a live game against a top opponent. I'm still confident that the staff will adjust personnel and schemes to mask our deficiencies and do it better than the last staff.

Herm Edwards is an absolutely horrendous coach. I can't believe this post.

Herm Edwards?!?! Seriously? LOL

Lost season after one game?

Yes, the RG, a Senior Captain with a plethora of experience was unceremoniously benched. Easiest position on the line, we're lost at the position. I've posted on here, countless times that Coach Ash needed to really look at the right side of the line. Now he knows.

QB, still throws off his back foot, can't see over the line, completed 24 passes for barely 150 yards.

it's a dink and dunk offense, just like last year. And you saw exactly how a real program handles that dreck.

I'm not panicking, but this is a 3-4 win team at best.

We're gonna be in a dogfight against New Mexico.

Herm Edwards is a fantastic Coach. Better than Schiano and better than Coach Ash.

no, that's not what a cover 6 shell is. good job being wrong.

Sooner than later you will see Juwan Harris and the kid from Texas as the wideouts along with Grant, we will begin to resemble the recievers we used to see at WVU smaller in stature but much quicker and faster, kids who can catch a 5yd pass and turn it into 10-15 yards with their feet. I don't know if this will lead to more wins but we will begin to resemble what recievers in a spread should be doing.

The game tapes will reveal if:

1) skill players did not make the correct pre-snap reads and take the right routes
2) QB didn't make the right pre-snap reads and predict where the receivers would be.. looked in the wrong place...
3) QB looked in the right place, saw the right thing, but still did not throw the ball
4) QB and skills did the right things, but OL allowed too much penetration so QB could not step up and throw
.etc etc etc...

game tapes should reveal all and we should see adjustments.... it would be nice if they could share their insights in such a way as to not BLAME anyone, but to explain the process.. set expectations for fans

I'll wait and see on the defense.. I rather liked some of the things I saw on D... obviously the speed of number 1 was a big problem.

So many people don't realize what a sh*tshow Flood left us with here.

I never agree with Cali politically:sunglasses: but he is usually in the ballpark concerning the team. I don't care if Lombardi and Parcells game planned and trained schooled them this was bound to happen. Tell talent is not there and the coach busted his cherry today. We have waited 147 years. Let's wait it out.

We were all fooled into being a little optimism to start the season. Ash will need 2-3 season to build his program. Anything sooner is gravy.
+1. Winning most of our toss-up games and springing a few mild upsets, will keep me happy for the next few years.
