Watched Pikes Tenure Closely

I’ve seen plenty of poor offensive performances….nothing like last night.

That’s the best defense we’ve ever seen by an opponent.

We were contested the second we crossed center court and could not get open looks for almost the entire 40 minutes.

Seton Hall should be undefeated if they defend that well
How Seton Hall played defense last night is the way Shaheen Holloway wants his team to play defense all the time, but it's been a struggle for him so far to have his roster adapt to it, especially they way the holdovers' were used to Kevin Willard's more lax approach. It seems that Holloway was able to get through to the team yesterday (as an alum, I know he values this game and the rivalry in a way Willard never did), and it showed. That defense was ferocious, and left me wondering if it was them turning the defensive corner or if it was just a one-off.

Thinking about it, I think Rutgers and Seton Hall have a lot of similarities this year, which is why both teams played that kind of a game last night. In both teams' cases, when they are playing their best, they lead with that type of defense. Neither team has any gifted scorers, and while both have a few guys who can hit a three, those same guys struggle a little bit to get their own shot. It was a little bit like holding a mirror up to Rutgers last night, which I don't think often happens to them. Someone had to win, but had they played another 40 minutes, you would've seen 25 more lead changes. I actually enjoyed the game, as "ugly" as some people thought it was. I loved seeing both teams get after it like that.

Difference is it felt like SHU kept composure and kept running good sets to get looks - while we folded and spiraled into bad decisions. Both teams played harassing, swarming defense - but I felt they had more mental toughess to push through it.
Seton Hall did keep their composure (and that was significant; so many teams lose it when Rutgers goes on a seven- or ten-point run) but you forced them into plenty of bad decisions and plays. I thought both teams played a remarkably similar game. We were just up when time expired, but the lead would've kept changing hands the longer they played.

with the exception of steals and a few more TOs for us it was a statistical dead heat. Stats were nearly identical.

We might have a slight edge in ball-handling (this feels like I'm setting you up for a joke), but it's defintely not a strength. You're right, a very, very even game that isn't really surprising if Seton Hall plays that kind of defense. (I just wasn't sure whether to expect it or not; I thought more likely "not.")

Over the last 8:20, SHU outscored RU 8-5. Neither side was doing much on offense, but down the stretch it felt like SHU was scrapping harder for boards and trying to work their offense while it felt like RU was unraveling and just trying to force things that weren't there.

Over the course of this rivalry, SHU hasn't scored 45 or fewer points since 1943, and RU hasn't scored 43 or fewer points since 1952... both long before the 3pt shot. Historically poor offensive performance by both teams.

ok, here's my joke attempt. We were the one's left holding our junk. Not funny.
Holloway was a pain in our a$$ when playing us , Now he's gonna continue being one. I loved how he coached that team last year and was afraid he might do that at the Hall. Kissing your guys a$$ like this is tough lol.

We'd also tip passes, almost come away with the steal, then lose it to an open SHU shooter.

RU was up 30-23....SHU missed two wide open 3s in one possession then basically stole the rebound from Cam and wound up gettting a layup....this play happened right after a Holloway timeout with 17 minutes left. That timeout and play seemed to reset the Pirates who had been outscored 18-4 over the prior 8 minutes.

One more time than we did? If we make any of those last open shots we both played ugly enough to score 45 pts. I know how you feel because I too when rooting for any team see what you are seeing but objectively speaking SHU did not get a lot of good looks last night. They hit a few 3’s and made a few plays and hit 10/19 on FT’s. I wouldn’t say they ran their Offense. They just made one more play than we did. Both teams played great D. Both teams were sloppy. They just made that one last basket and we did not.

Our respective performances at the line also helped keep RU in it. Had we each shot our respective team averages, SHU would have won by ~8 insured of 2.

I'd say that SHU put up less junk, especially toward the end of the game. We didn't give them good looks, but their offense looked like it was taking better shots and fighting harder for rebounds. It felt like their defense had to work less hard as the game progressed, because our offense became less and less cohesive.

Over the final 9:10 of the game:
- We were outscored 11-5
- We were outrebounded 13-9 (and outrebounded 7-1 from 9:10 to 4:14)
- Committed 4 fouls to their 2

What does this have to do with Pikes tenure? One game where the opponent was just as good or better at defender than we are. They came to play and we didn’t. We are offensively challenged and have been over performing as of late.

Their athleticism and aggression provided superior matchups against our offense. Great defensive scheme which included taking Cliff out of his game. The nature of Cliff's fouls provides the "tell" that they got under his skin from the get-go. I seem to remember his first foul being far away from the basket. His second foul was retaliatory in nature. Then he sat. Later on, the tech for jawing with the opponent was the third. Those three fouls were totally unproductive. I would rather use 3 fouls used to stop shots and force the opponent to sink both free throws. If SHU makes 4 out of 6, then we have a tie in regulation. Never waste your fouls. Never listen to the opponents yapping. Once they take you out of your game, you are done, and their defense succeeds.

It means I’ve watched it

Seton Hall sucks offensively and only scored 45 points. They are not a good team. It’s excusable to look that bad on offense. We’re going to see much tougher match ups in the B1G
RU averages 69.4 a game and SHU averages 68.9 a game, seems like the offenses are similar. Consider SHU has played the tougher schedule thus far and RU offense ain't looking so good (SHU strength of schedule 53rd, RU is 83rd)

exactly, if you’re comparing SHU’s offense to RU’s than it probably sucks. RU’s is no better. Last night was two offensively challenged teams. I don’t know what the point of your post was.
