We are a quality 3 or 4 away from being dangerous.

Anyone we are recruiting that can fit the bill. Someone that can shoot a 15 foot jumper and roll of some pick anf rolls.

Been saying this all year! One player that can shoot and we can win 7-8 in conf.
The same comment could have been made many times in past seasons .To be truly successful, however, in a power conference multiple scoring threats must be on the court at the same time.

Thiam needs to lift ALOT of weights and he needs to add something other than a 3pt shot which he may be great in practice but is horrid in games. His misses are not even close. You could understand if front rim or back rim stick with it and keep firing but they are waaaay off. He's losing focus in games

Thiam is a true freshman with a slight frame and more of a shooting guard mentality... but with development, he could become a strong option at the 3. He needs to add about 20 pounds, improve his shooting mechanics, and add some more tools to the small forward skill set... but he has time ahead of him to do that, with a staff that I think can get him there.

It won't all come in time for next season, but I think we'll see improvement there. Really hoping he can grow into that role as a junior and senior, though.

Well if guys can't shoot from the floor why are you shocked that they cannot hit FT's ?

Maybe they just can't shoot .

We have been through this already

6 of our guys are shooting 7-10% below their previous FT %age.

Nobody is asking for 85+% FT shooters. But the FT shooting this year has been awful...not just in general, but in the specific context of the specific players and their specific historical percentages.

Actually if we had a flat out shooter, a Quincy, a Ricky Shields, Jerome Coleman, Donnell Lumpkin or Ricky Dadika and a Big that could finish and flush it around the rim, we would be an NCAA bubble team. We certainly would be above 500 in the down conference this year and probably have 7-8 conference wins.

How often has RU had both of those things at once?

Could it be because they are actually expending energy on defense this year ?

All stats from last year were sku'd by the fact that the games were usually over with 15 minutes left to play and guys were playing against backups.

Rashon Kent with Billet and Hodgson; Brent Dabbs with Duncan and Hughes ; our 2004 team with Douby and Herve and Axani ; Ricky Shields with Adrian Hill; and a lot earlier but yeah not a lot lately. MIKE was supposed to be our dead eye shooter and that has not panned out, but if Doucore reclassifies and can finish around the hole, then I will hope Mike and Nigel and Corey as seniors and upperclassman will have good shooting next year and Geo helps.

I definitely agree thats a factor.

Was pushing back on the theory its because they are bad shooters.

Sanders and Freeman are the biggest head scratchers from a FT perspective. They also shoot the most FTs on the team.

Sanders:
OOC last year: 43/58 (74%)
Conf last year: 34/50 (68%)
OOC this year: 26/39 (67%)
Conf this year: 38/65 (58%)

Freeman:
Juco average: 65%
OOC last year: 23/34 (68%)
Conf last year: DNP
OOC this year: 45/64 (70%)
Conf this year: 26/56 (46%)

I'm watching Wichita state and they got this 6 foot white kid that transferred from Kansas.

If we had someone like that joker, we would have been a dangerous club

I have watched Montclair Immaculate a couple times this season. I know everybody is looking at Jalen Carey because he is super athletic but he needs some polish in his offensive skills and basketball IQ. I hope the RU staff also takes a long look at their PG Jordyn Owens who is 6 ft tall, has a great handle, sets up teammates very well and he is an excellent 3 point shooter. Owens is also an excellent student who has some Ivy league teams looking at him.

The missed wide open jumper down the stretch summed up the whole picture. $$$$
Many of the other teams are in the same situation as us the last few minutes of the game. They might lose also, but they keep hitting the one shot each time to keep them in it. Hit those and you have a chance. Miss them and you lose by 8 or 9. For now, that's us.

Without over-complicating it, I'm basically in agreement w/the OP. A quality 3 or 4 and we're dangerous w/anyone we play. Maybe we get the NIT.

freeman has warts, but we are set at the 4. We desperately need the unrealistic preseason expectations of Thiam. A deadly tall perimeter shooter with that is feared from the perimeter and plays adequate D.

I'm really interested to see how much improvement we see out of Thiam in the offseason. I'm assuming they're going to work on changing his shooting form... which means he'll be able to get his shot off more often, but might see a drop in his hit rate and confidence in the short term. They're definitely going to work on getting his weight and stamina up, which should help him.

Also curious to see how much SF skill set he can add... slashing, play around the rim, back to the basket, etc.

I personally don't think we'll see significant improvement until he's a junior.

I think by next year you see him at 6 points and 4 rebound a game. By junior year, 11 points and and 6 rebounds a game.

Like you mentioned, as long as he heightens his release, he is going to be tough to guard.

It's also possible he can't make the adjustment. There is most likely a reason he shoots like he does. Jump shots and set shots are 2 totally different things.

This is also possible. Tinkering with his shot may throw it off entirely - and he may not be able to adjust to playing more of a wing role.

ABSOLUTELY YES...plus what I have been talking about in terms of the S&C having an effect on the shooting feel

Been saying all year that we will get a much better effect after the second off season for the S&C...partially for THESE reasons...

I can hit 3's consistently in a shoot-a-round. So can most high school players. It means nothing. Playing in live action is a completely different animal.
But if you miss those same shots in practice, you'll probably miss them in the game. Definitely need the first to have a chance at the second. I'm not so sure we hit them in practice.
