What happened to our defense on Sunday?

I think traveling twice in a row to Minnesota is odd. I thought leagues usually try to rotate so that you don’t get consecutive games at other teams arenas. Even more odd when RU only playing Minny once this year. Tad unfair.
W... what difference does it make?? How would we be better off if last year's Minnesota games were flip/flopped?

Nebraska played at the RAC on 2/14/23 and then played again at the RAC on 1/17/24. This is unfair to Nebraska for some reason? Usually I assume other fanbases have similar nutjobs to ours but I am willing to bet I cannot find someone on the Nebraska board who complains about this or even noticed it for that matter.

The whole MSG fiasco with RU giving away a home game and playing away @ MSU last year, and again away this year so that MSU only comes to the RAC once in three years is absurd. I think a bit unfair no?
not this year
We’ve had a couple week off layoffs which are nice but think B1G can do a better job than an RU game on Thursday night and then a quick turn around to fly cross country for a game on a Sunday.
Yes we all get 10 home games but not all schedules are equal.
Thursday/Sunday is the same as Saturday/Tuesday. How can you whine this much??

Rewatched the game and while not his best game he still was creating havoc and hustling, ie the two rebound put backs. Bigger issue was JMike and the open threes.
Minny hit 8 threes. That’s hard to beat. Plus went to the line 34 times

Honest question here lol...when you're watching a Rutgers game and jmike gets a steal, hits a 3 or does anything good, does it piss you off a little bit? Jeez

Nada. Only in response when posters above saying Simpson or Williams didn’t have their legs. Honest question here lol…. Do you only have selective outrage? Or do you not read all the posts? Or do you only complain about opinions you don’t like?
This entire board hasn’t treated Simpson fairly and it’s usually JMike could do no wrong. See above, “Simpson and Williams didn’t have their legs.” And Simpson can do no right.
Jeez.

Truth. Simpson and Hyatt get the most abuse. Even after they have a great game it's all about what they did wrong. Gavin and J Mike get passes I guess because they're freshman. I like them all. We need them all to play well to win. Fans picking and choosing are morons. Root for all of them.

My bad lol I know why you do it. Simpson has brought maximum effort to every game this season whether his shot is falling or not. Rebounding and his defensive effort has been consistent.

They both play ridiculously hard. They both are very good on defense (Simpson is better). They both have tunnel vision (Simpson is getting better). They both are bad shooters (Simpson is better). Simpson makes FT and JaMike doesn't.

Simpson is a soph and JaMike is a freshman. They both drive me absolutely nuts on offense and I love them on D and their hustle and really value their role in fixing the DREB early season problem,

Minny was good. They were hurting us on the inside, and when we focused on that we couldn’t get back on their 3-point shooters who were 8/16. They also got the ball up the floor well. I’m guessing they can’t play much better than they did, a handful.
A lot of truth to this. When we played our best we dismantled a ranked team at home. When you get a lead the basket gets bigger and the 3's start dropping.

I just don’t understand where this idea comes from that Simpson is bashed on this board in general. He does tons of things well! Everyone admits that! But he still struggles mightily with shot selection and actually making shots. It’s been improving.

Simpson is a focal point of our team. Davis is a freshman that no one had any expectations for. It’s not a mystery why they are evaluated in different contexts.

I believe Simpson will be a lot better next season. I think his struggles will motivate him to work on his game and his body this off season. I know for a fact jmike will get top notch training from his agency. All of these guys will be a lot better next year.

Just amazes me. A Jersey Kid! Only a sophomore. Sure he misses some shots but improving by the day. Plays so hard, great D and always hustles. Has been clutch. His assists are improving. Last week he played 32 minutes and had only one turnover and most of the time he is the guy bringing the ball up. Even had 5 rebounds. A great all around game. Best foul shooter on the team. You wouldn’t know that from most of the post game commentary.

He should be the fan favorite. Certainly shouldn’t be subject to scorn.

I know everyone likes JMike. I do too.He plays great D and hustles too and seems very likable and sure he helped getting Ace. So I get it.

Unfortunately all the love for him was so unfairly and usually at the expense of Simpson. Comparisons inevitable.

nah, either you can shoot by now or you can't. it's not about body or experience. Cam Christie is a freshman and can hide behind a pencil and he'd be the best shooter on our team. So would Jaden Jones, who we were happy left the program, but on second thought....

both will shoot less next year because they'll play less, or at least i hope they shoot less. they don't seem to have any conscience or qualms about hoisting grade school playground crap toward the rim, especially Simpson. Is he making NIL by how often he shoots ?

Bottom line Rutgers allowed too many offensive rebounds that resulted in baskets .On offense Rutgers started the second half with a long scoring drought and were never able to catch up.The lack of bench scoring was another problem. The margin for error is slim with a offense that is mediocre .Allowing any opponent to score over 70 points is difficult to overcome.

Is it mediocre ? We’d be in much better shape if mediocre. Aren’t they near last in offensive efficiency?

If we had the #150 offense we’d be #39 overall.
If we had the #100 offense we’d be #23 overall.
If we had the #75 offense (still mediocre to bad by power conference standards) we’d be #16 overall

Just seemed like Mag and JWill were under the weather and not themselves. We have no answer when a team plays two bigs at the same time.

So you agree the offense isn’t even close to mediocre ?

Why is anyone comparing them. It's not one vs the other. We need them both.

He is a fan favorite. We just have a handful of fans that are idiots. Most people I talk to love him. It's just here on this board where people love to hate.

Comparisons of those two are just dumb. You think Pike is playing one against the other or building chemistry?

Sometimes it bad matchup, sometimes it's momentum.

Ha ha ha. Building chemistry. Chemistry can’t happen when two guards are primarily interested in getting shots off, shitty shots at that..

This is a really unfair take …it’s NOT taking into consideration the others on the court

Driving lanes are there or aren’t there …depending on how much space there is

And what determines that space? How much other defenders can hedge off their own man to make those driving lanes smaller and cut off without having to pay for hedging by a drive and kick

Sure Jmike and Derek could have sone better vision , but the reality is …throw a couple of 37-39% three point shooters on the wing that have to be accounted for , and you will see the space open up to drive more and the guards be more effective

We have guys on the wing who are NOT effective shooting from high percentage from outside (thars Hyatt, mag and Gavin) and are not devastating faking the shot and going mid range …they are okay to solid , but nothing opponents have to massively account for either

Get more talent on the wing, your are going to be surprised how much better our guards will look. I bet Jwill can’t wait for Dylan and Airous …any help defense to stop him will be a pass to someone who open who will be more likely make opponents pay for help….

And THATS what helps penetrating guards the most …..

I am being serious…..when one lifts they arent doing max weight and pushing things real hard and expect in 3 days to be at peak performance.

I know runners arent going all out 3 days before a big meet.

Same for swimmers.

It was, at least to me, brutally obvious we didnt have our legs. Jeremiah looked nothing like other games. Sinpson hasnt been beaten off the dribble like that.
"I know runners arent going all out 3 days before a big meet." That concept didn't apply to us hurdlers and relay team guys. In fact, I think an indoor track practice, or a wrestling practice would absolutely wipe out most basketball players.

I was a track guy and this isn't true. Training is specifically scheduled for you to "peak" at the optimal time in the season. We weren't running 10 200s under 24 seconds the day before a big meet lol

Put our defensive possessions side by side your typical ACC team. Completrly different intensity and requirements.

It comes at a cost though.

I'd like to win 2 games the rest of the year (Purdue and Nebraska), where RU scores in the low to mid 70s and shows an ability to not rely 1000% on defense.

Minne has a pg who creates and looks to distribute, their ball movement overall and I think they lead the conf in assists. That style of play is rough on our style of D

Looks like Rutgers had the same issue in Minnesota that UConn had at Creighton last night ... running into a team on a hot night on the road.

Just looking back at Northwestern..Ty Berry, one of their best players and a VG 3 point shooter didn't play (injury). We couldn't stop Buie even without Berry on the floor, imagine how many points they both would have had.

And Langbord, their other main rotation guard, got ejected. It's less 'execution' than talent.

Combination of things… just weren’t that sharp, possibly tired, Minnesota played well, shot 50% from deep. Even when we did cause them anxiety they recovered (they made a lot of dicey passes that were forced by our defense but that they held on to). It happens.
I didn't even watch the Minny game, but sometimes players just make shots. And sometimes teams get hot.

Buie was hot for a half, wasn't much of a factor in the 2nd half though.

Rutgers got hot vs Wisconsin. I don't think Wisconsin is especially bad defensively.

"The day" before is different than "three days" before. Ten 200s the day before a meet would be excessive, but all-out, back-to-back 400s or four successive, full speed 200s a couple days before the meet would keep your competitive edge. Some all-out efforts, some intense stretching and some hurdle technique exercises make a busy practice. If we got our early morning indoor track practices (before school started) done quickly, we would get in some full-court basketball. Senior year, I ran indoor track (relay team got 2nd in the state), played in three basketball leagues and occasionally helped with a fourth. Pardon me if I laugh when I hear that basketball players are tired from 30 minutes of basketball.

Right. And With substitution, timeout and halftime rests .

In conclusion: Basketball players are poorly conditioned athletes.
