When does Greg’s seat get hot?

Absolutely true ! Lol
Meaning they would not hire him so I doubt they would have a problem firing him. Said differently if another coach not named Greg at MSU,NW, or Indiana put out that product we had on the field last year. That coach would be gone before the year was over. We say we want to be big time but never act big time
I still don't get what you are saying- all three of Indiana/NWU/Mich St. had very good seasons recently. and all three have seen mult years now of shit play- so, their coaches that they hired took good teams and fell apart. Greg got a bad team and didn't improve it much but he did improve the program.
Mich St/NWU would have still kept their crappy HC's if they didnt have to fire them for non football stuff.

Greg was not fired because he did what was asked of him when he was hired. Take us out of the bottom of FBS and get the program in order. You are just limited in your view. No understanding of building a program.

Yes he would have…we have to stop with this victim mindset that no one wants to come here..we are in the best conference in the country in the largest market in the country.
then how come no one came.
It's not the program, it's what the program offered to candidates that entice them to come.
Being in the best conference and largest TV market are pluses, unless what's offered to come isn't enough to make top choices feel they can succeeded there.
Gambling your career on a program that doesn't give you all the tools needed to succeed is a sure fire way to fail.
Just because someone signs on at another program for what looks like less doesn't
mean that program didn't give the new hire the tools needed to succeed.
Just the cost was less there than at Rutgers
Victim mentality no, but not a we got everything needed mentality either.
When the offer is low, the candidate says no, especially when they are expected to turn sludge into drinking water and hurt their career if they fail.

Why is it Rutgers never hired the cream of crop top candidates in the HC community from the time Frank Burns was forced to retire until the Return of Schiano came about.
To many think RU is the type of program that has the best of the best look their way.
That might happen occasional but the top guns take a quick glance at what's being offered , know what's needed to succeed , put them together and decide run don't walk to the nearest exit and don't look back

Don't think Hobbs wanted Schiano, Hobbs found out Greg was the best he could get at the price being offered and that's with Hobbs not having competition for Schiano's services

Did not put that int on him nor did i say it was. . Love all the stats.

I will make the leap that you have played or know a tremendous amount about football.

So simply when you watch him and this offense you feel like its an effective offense. Read Wisconsin defense comments about the pick 6 last week and what they saw on film.

You are incoherent and not worth responding to. Enjoy your life--some of us choose to look at the bright side and not invent new reasons to be unhappy. Fandom is a many splendid thing. Go RU.

Though it didn’t work out, one of the hottest assistants that off-season came after Flood.

After Ash though, with the fan uprising, Hobbs HAD TO make it work with Greg. That’s why no one came that time.

Hobbs definitely didn’t want Schiano…but it was schiano or his job…

nice to ignore his 4 TD on the ground...They do count.

As for Saturday's game-
1) He won his 5th game
2) you liked to mention the 2 Int's...you did watch the game? The 2 are in the stat book but please don't tell me that 1st one was on him instead of a 15 yd gain.
and for the season
Somehow, as crappy as he is, he is leading an offense that is 5th in scoring in the B1G and more points per game then any of the West teams.
An offense that ranks 110th out of 130 FBS teams in the country. Lol. We haven’t even played the hard part of our schedule.

Dude - come on. The job (at both the HC and AC level) was completely different after Flood. Your a strong Flood supporter so I’m surprised your not acknowledging this. We were a season away from an 8 win season with a bowl win over UNC. Even in 2015-16, that team was a play away (WSU game) from entering the last game of the season playing Maryland with a bowl game on the line. The state of the program wasn’t close to the train wreck it was following Ash. And the optics of Flood’s departure weren’t such that the next guy could view it as the role at RU hurt his career trajectory. It was the off field decisions that cost Flood his job.

With Ash - he was an up and coming DC that brought a program down to its darkest point arguably ever. Ash’s tenure at RU plummeted his stock as a HC candidate presumably forever. Beyond that, Ash was so bad at developing players that our roster was left in significantly worse shape than most mid-major rosters in places (the trenches) where you need depth. The next guy stepping in needed to have enough of an established name brand be able to recruit immediately to be able to bring us back to respectability. We were too far gone to roll the dice and bring in an up and coming program developer / x and o game day coach and hope they could be good enough at big time recruiting to be able to stop us from being the laughing stock we were. We couldn’t afford another season of 78-0 type domination at any cost. We needed a brand name and we wisely picked the one with the highest floor.

Will he be on the hot seat before he wins B1G coach of the year or after? hmmmm very interesting

Extremely fair but NW 3 wins Howard,Utep, and MiNN not world beaters. Va tech lost to Marshall first time in over 80 years that happened. Improvement on D absolutely. Special teams has regressed badly and offense still unwatchable.
In 4 years when rotating schedule is over some teams in the big ten will not have a seat and will be out of the big ten.
Read national coverage on RU , read how we are perceived. Read the The Athletic article from august 2023 on RU and worst big ten move ever by a conference. 250 mil in debt:
I love my school and want to be great and GS is not that guy. Continue down the SlOW rebuild and we will be out of the fbs
Of all the bad takes this might be the worst ever. We are not getting kicked out of the B1G. You understand that the B1G is about much more than football. Right? I’m not even talking other sports that we are doing well in. How about research? How about academic standing? How about TV revenue? How about schools like USC and Michigan wanting that NYC exposure? You should probably not concern yourself with the opinions and other fan bases and media who don’t even know why we were brought in in the first place.

Hi honey!

The last two coaches are an AD problem “, and why were we forced into that problem? Who left us high and drive in the last minute?

We both can list ten coaches minimum who were hired in the last 4 years who have had Far Far more success then us. Past coaches have nothing to do with Greg’s replacement.

Not ONE big ten team would have kept GS after last year. We say we want to be a true big ten FBS team but settle for completed ineptitude.

Agreed that any coach will find it very difficult to compete against the power house teams of the big team every year.

Deion I could care less but he instantly solves our deficit problem in RU athletics. Raises more money and brings instant respectability all be it for a brief time. Stadium would ACTUALLY be filled and other coaches could see what RU can be. Shit the Phillies are showing up to playoff games is Colorado sweatshirts. You need to think broader then New Brunswick.

You mention Tucker for what reason? Burn what house down? The interim coach put it on GS all day. Made 3 huge mistakes late but he’s an interim coach so expected. Once they hire an actual new head coach MSU will instantly be better then RU and ranked before we ever will be.

You mention one article . Yes NW written article but take the time to read all of the RU coverage. Understand how we’re are looked at outside of your tiny world.

I understand your brother is a great energy guy and motivator but coaching has past him by.

My Sunday has been tremendous. Spending time with the kids and a little apple picking. I’ll save one for you.

I find it hysterical after how embarrassing we played that ppl want to come on here and brag or boast about GS facing an interim staff and true freshman QB and that’s how we played.
It’s not an interim staff or a true freshman head coach. It’s an interim head coach. The staff is exactly who Tucker wanted and hired. And the QB if a RS freshman.

The difference between Flood and Ash was that Flood started with a system in place, one that had already worked. He tried to continue it, but it eventually fell apart on Flood's own merit. Ash followed Flood, and he got what was left over, which wasn't much. Flood at least tried to recruit. Ash didn't know how. And he ran his own system that no one has ever understood to this day. No one else in the country would have hired Flood as its head coach, an OL coach who had been demoted from co-OC. Ash was a somewhat hot young assistant, but there are always hot young assistants, and they often don't work out. Both were bad choices.

Not exactly sure what stat you are using but since scoring was brought up.

Using just FBS games, we are 82nd in the country at 23.7ppg
That is ahead of Purdue, Northwestern, Minnesota, Iowa, Illinois, Nebraska, Michigan State and Indiana.
So 6th in the Big Ten (Unfornatuely, 4 of the 5 teams ahead of us are all in our division).
Certainly not great but much better than our extremely low bar.

Note - as you correctly point out this might be the high point for the season.
But even if it falls, this is much improved over where we have been the last many years even after just the easy part of our schedule.

I'm still not a fan of how we got there and am highly skeptical that it will translate to better defenses (see my "Speed up the offense" thread), but can't really deny that our floor offense is much improved so far.

I didn’t think anyone could overtake Shelby’s spot on the throne for poster with worst takes but this guy did it with bells on. Going for the record on this string alone. We’re 5-2 and at the moment, there are media guys picking Greg as the frontrunner for BIG coach of the year. Even Shelby knows now is the time to shut up and see how the season plays out (unless we lose to Indiana). Geez

I'm not sure if some people ever get past some things they read on a message board.

They program was not in shambles after Flood left. He did not leave it in the same shape but it was far from shambles. Ash came in and thought he needed to change the NJ way. He also alienated NJ HS.
Flood did not become OL Coach after being demoted from Co-OC. He was OL coach for a number of years, creating some of the best OL's in college football and was given a promotion so he could get a raise in pay. His duties never changed.
Ash actually had quite a bit to work with. But was more concerned about 24 hour snacks and hydration.

There was a couple of things about the program that Greg handed to Flood. They were behind the scenes. First- the biggest one- The football team lost all support under the new AD who did everything in her power to destroy it. Unless she could get her own coach. And even bigger to Flood's downfall. When Greg left, he had the full control of the University. He never would have had to go to a professor to ask for an extra credit assignment. The professor would have already known what they needed to do. Everyone laughs about "Ray don't do tests" but scoffs at asking for an extra credit assignment. Flood made his bed but a lot of fences that had been around the FB team came down as soon as Greg left.

Boy, everyone takes shots here but Flood. He had the opportunity of a lifetime that absolutely no team in the country ever would have given him and haven't since, he rode the fumes to a BE title (nice), and then he corroded it. It's nobody's fault but his own that he showed up dressed like McGruff the Crime Dog to meet a professor in Princeton, and he doesn't get to blame someone other than himself that he didn't have the institutional support that Schiano did (Schiano won that for himself), all while recruiting, performance and coaching continued to dip. I don't see it helping his resume much that he was never an OC in the first place, making it even more fantastical that this guy was handed a head coaching job simply for short-term hopes that he could keep a single recruiting class together, one that he could never duplicate.

I've never really identified the few Flood supporters that still exist. I guess you're one. Enjoy that.

(P.s. Nice shot you took at RU for changing the grades of students for the benefit of the football team. Please, go ahead and describe those instances.)

Greg has to beat Indiana this week
Agree...
He has done well this year...but he cannot lose to a team that has been no better than Temple.

I don't get where some posters ae saying they are a tough team. NO, they arent. They could beat us, sure they can. But that would be a major WTF game.
This game does define Greg's season and his first few years. Bowl on the line and for once, he is fielding a much better team.

I could go down into a very deep discussion but I also clearly stated that he made his own bed. And the thing that Flood did to piss me off more than anything else- h sold out to $$$ instead of sticking to his integrity. He also just gave up.
And, I will add, I don't believe he was ever a HC/CEO type of coach. He did get caught in the Peter Principle, with no support to help guide him through it.

Flood was excellent at practice and on gameday but was not a program guy. It's not his fault, he was thrust into by Greg's departure (a departure that was just 3 days shy of him swearing to the powers that be that he was not leaving). Now those same powers that be are the ones at fault at the end of the day as they had no plan in place, despite repeated stories of Greg's agent being contacted, for the possible departure. Greg fked us but the school fked us much more

RU needs to start running this like a business

oh and I'd shitcan everyone in Athletic office and hire competent people to run everything but what the coaches do. RU is still a $hitshow

About what? You conceded Flood wasn't good, wasn't qualified. You rambled on and on about other stuff, like a 16yr old boy or girl might do (as you like to put it), but I'm not interested.
ahh I get your schtick now

our village *&^&&^ approves your retort so you got that going for you

These guys who find the need to constantly attack a standing coach/ players , even after a win, have no idea what it means to show loyalty and support . Stand up guys?? Nope
Just like the huge wave of preseason snipes... the haters are coming out now because, with a probable win next week Schiano has us in a bowl game. Then their arguments will have to change. Asshats.. the lot of them.

Their entire argument is based around taking some hot coach in any given year and imagining that we could have / should have hired that coach. That's their best argument.. anyone but Schiano. Then you have another group of "realists" who think we can hire the next Nick Saban.. but we are too cheap to do so. They said the same when Kansas hired Les Miles... National Championship-winning Les Miles. Who is no longer at Kansas and only went there because his "commute" from his Louisiana properties was manageable... and, of course, the many millions.. which Kansas largely had because of its basketball program.

The haters are insane... or merely fans of anyone but Rutgers.

I don’t like schiano as a coach. Admited that often here. And I’ve said many times I hope he makes my feelings change

Flood when hired wasn't ready for the top spot in my opinion.
His first year was a good one using experienced players that learned to play the college game from the disciplined way Schiano taught it.
Dave Brock was the OC and did a creditable job, using RU's (9-5) success for the HC job at Delaware after RU lost the bowl game it was in
Next year (2013) Had Ron Prince the OC . team and wound up 6-7 regular season ( bowl loss) The program looked like it was in decline to many fans .
Friedgen came aboard as the OC for the 2014 season and Rutgers looked like it was on its way to being a pretty good B1G program.
2015 didn't have Fridge on staff and Ben McDaniels didn't seem up to the task and the roster had less talent then what Flood inherited in 2012.
I feel the quality of Rutgers play wasn't based on Flood's HC ability but his OC being good enough to bring home the victory.
Joe Ross & Robb Smith were decent DCs and David Cohen ( fired before bowl game) left some room for improvement but Prince's O had RU go 6-6 regular season.

Kyle is being given credit for being a winning HC, I feel he left the work to his coordinators and on his own was over his head as a HC when he was RU's HC.
He might have leaned a thing or two after leavingand I think it will be pretty soon he'll get a chance to prove if he did

Serious question..how long can the program just tread water….???

Program needs a spark badly..
The OP and many others want everything immediately. When Greg was hired for 2.0, everyone knew this would take 4-5 years just to get back to average. Forget this last game. There has been major progress in this program. Greg is here as long as he want’s because he is a great coach. They are not getting rid of him.

The interesting thing about Prince- and I only heard it 2nd hand(though, as credible as it can get) that Prince was Julie's inside man and was doing anything possible to get Flood's job.

This is why I have said for a yar- this is his year to prove himself. I was not in the group that was going to give him another throw away year. Ad to clarify- even if we had ended with 5 wins but I saw progress in the right direction- I was ok to see where it goes. But, if it was similar to 2022, I would have said his seat should be on fire.
Greg did do what he was really brought here for regardless. He righted the ship. The program was back to being respectable.
Funny enough, if he gets the win(expected)- plays with house money and finds another win, gets us to a decent bowl...his job becomes easier to replace as Rutgers becomes a lot more desirable.

Answer is: Not this year if we go bowling. And that means not next year either. If bowling next year too- contract extension

The interesting thing about Prince- and I only heard it 2nd hand(though, as credible as it can get) that Prince was Julie's inside man and was doing anything possible to get Flood's job.
Sounds like it probably was the case, seeing that there was a rumor that went around (2014 ?)that claimed she tried to get booster put up the money to buy Kyle out, but failed to get it done.
