OT: Any Burned Out Teachers in Here?

Front page article in today's WSJ 'U.S. Has Too Many Schools For Two Few Students"

Behind a paywall, but very pertinent.

Give me a break! Weekends off, week off for Christmas, and all summer off. Forgot all of the national holidays.

Hey grumps, It's 2024. Weekends off hasnt been a groundbreaking rarity for at least a couple years now.

Don't know that a week off for Xmas is either.

The old summers off argument. Would definitely be better to crank up the pressure on these kids over 230 days and not give them a break at all like the little robots they are. And screw that NJ economy that relies on beach goers, summer camps and the like to be strong. And those building without consistent air conditioning? Screw those poor saps who have to work in those conditions!

Before I moved classrooms last year, my room was regularly 86 degrees and my admins told me that there was nothing they could do. Well, maybe they could have just you know, fixed the air. Instead, we had to move out of the room when it got too hot and the 6/7 year olds couldn't deal anymore. And yes, the association fought for me and the other miserable saps but got stonewalled constantly by dragging things out until summer break and we would just repeat the same arguments the next year when it got hot.

There’s too one school districts in Camden County where there’s multiple 6 figure admin for the one K-5 or K-8 schools there. It’s either EVERYONE WANTS TO BE A CHIEF or I WANT MY OWN 💩!

But it’s “teachers” faults

So , unless I’m not understanding this point you are making .. . Jersey shore depends upon the teachers and students being off for 2+ months…. BTW: Schools for the most part do have A/C …. What did your grandparents, parents and others do in those archaic times? How were they able to survive those barbaric conditions. Puhleez…Don’t go there youngster…. You have these things only because those same people pay for it. Abused by the state politicians for decades and you think you are somehow not treated right? I think you and the others teaching the current rugrats need to take a deep , deep introspective look and be thankful. . We can empathize somewhat however there are far more jobs which are A) underpaid B) Unrewarding C) stressful D) and you can be terminated much , much more quickly

"Don't go there youngster?"

Bob, If we promise to only use your exact quotes, will you post a photo of yourself in an old man cap so we can make memes?

I suppose we could just post your quotes on any old crotchety fella looking angry and confused, but it wouldn't feel as authentic, you know?

So who required or demanded multiple admins? The school board? State regulations? The union? Town government?

Notice three of the four on that list are fully owned by the teachers union. The fourth IS the teachers union. Who none of the "teachers" here refuses to join.

Hey when I was in elementary and middle school and it got real hot in the Spring they shut off the lights for us. No AC. Toughen up.

Oh the old we need summers off because the economy needs us at the shore. LOL. No wonder the entire education universe in the US is F-ed up.

One of my worst days yet in teaching. Without going into too many details teachers turning on each other due to burnout. Came home cried, yelled then talked to my wife ( also teachers in our district just different school). Tell her I just need to go out. For whatever reason went to a food store normally I don’t go to. Get to the cash register and a hear the cashier say that he likes my shirt. After the day I had, I had to look down to see what I had on ( of course it was a Rutgers polo). He tells me he is an incoming freshman at Rutgers. Told him my story of Rutgers Pharmacy School for 3 years then a degree in Psychology from Rutgers. Then I told him now I teach, as do my wife and daughter. This young man looks me dead in the eye and says, “ I have so much respect for you and all the other teachers. I know how tough you have it”. I mean Holy Sh*t. It was exactly what I needed to hear today. Might actually get me to the finish line this year😉

Ya know, you guys had a pretty big hand in creating all of these little monsters you're complaining about. Reap what ya sow.

Odd take. Do you give us credit for their success stories?

You came home and cried ? They tortured you that much? Time to find a new profession.

Not the kids. They are the least of my concerns. Adults not “torturing me” just seeing sides in some I would have never expected

Really? Time to find a new job. If administrations and parents continue to allow their progeny to disrupt and agitate the classroom then better to use your talents elsewhere. Keep in mind you will give up all the off time .

You chose this profession in order to educate children… you play a role in their development over time. We see now teachers leaving unexpectedly… nurses leaving unexpectedly… doctors burned out yet nothing good seems to be on an upward trajectory. Do we blame parents? Or do we blame those who were put into positions and their voters?

For some of us our students are like our own children. Will never walk out on my daughter, will never walk out on students who need me. Doesn’t mean I don’t have a right to be upset and vent.

Give up my off time? I work Summer School, after School sporting events, etc etc….. There is no off time. Lot of people make that assumption about teachers. Was in banking for 21 years prior. Had to hear about bankers hours from some folks. Managed real estate and consumer lending for a large credit union in Northern NJ.

The same people who complain about teachers have no issues with corporations and it’s admin getting their tax cuts, golden parachutes, etc.

No , you certainly do have that right. Teachers for the most part want to TEACH … it is or was once a thought of as a calling. Thank the idiots who run the Unions… they already got theirs. There is absolutely too much politics involved and teachers themselves do bare some blame for going along with this type of foolishness. It has come back to bite them in the arse.I have teachers in my family actively saying the very same things being mentioned. Not asking you to be a sacrificial lamb but somebody in that field needs to grow a pair. BTW: Agree middle school kids in these 2000’s are way out of control in some districts.

Summer school is an easy payday even in 2020’s. Working school sports events is pretty lucrative for the time spent. Personal side here: you will find people who get frustrated in a particular field and change their priorities and directions usually never are perfectly satisfied both in the job and monetarily . They will never be happy.

Easy pay day? You work in my district? May father rest his soul was the principal of a summer school for many years. Was threatened at different times with knives, guns, harm to my family etc etc…….. Again not easy now and not easy in the past as some may claim it to be. Never said I was leaving the field of teaching. Again venting different compared to leaving.

It’s summer… please don’t claim you are stressed in a school summer job. So my point is for what reason was that allowed ? If you are staying it can’t be that bad or you would . Do you teach in NJ? If so it means you are accepting of being treated like a serf. Most of my high school classmates who went into teaching became disgusted back in the 70’s thru 90’s.Good Luck… If you have children / grandchildren make sure they understand it’s not a picnic.

Sure… Working summer school at half pay, no material, no AC, kids from multiple schools who you don’t know is “easy.”

Getting an extra $1200- $3600 for middle school sports and $2000-$4000 for high school sports is “lucrative.” Esp after all the time, money, and effort the coaches put in if they were legit coaches. Hell HS football coaches only get a $13K stipend.

But probably have no problem with the admin making 6 figures with politician level perks programs and connections. Those are the ones who been stealing money from “the kids.”

I’m waiting for the QUIT IF YOU DONT LIKE IT response.

As disparate as the views are around here, I don't think anyone has supported that.

NJ as did my father. You know very little about summer school. Regarding my child she is a proud graduate of a NJ school and now also teaches in that same district. Extremely proud of her hard work and love she has for her students. By the way, she also teaches summer school. You know little about me so stop making comments like I should leave. I will tell you again I am dedicated to my students. That’s why I teach regular and summer school.

That may be the case but those admins should get the same F*** THE TEACHERS that’s been spouted off here. Hell, it’s them not the teachers who’s responsible for the corruption and mess.

No sorry I know a great deal about summer school… I told you I have 2 teachers both in their 40’s who both have done summer school . You went into teaching after a “ burned out career” in private industry. You remember your late father and what he was subjected to but nonetheless you chose that field . Even still , your child goes into teaching. Sorry junior I don’t buy your childish reply. You want sympathy but don’t admit you hate your teaching job… you expect no negative backlash…. Wow…no wonder the profession is in tatters.👍🏻😎

Here … quit if it’s not to your liking or change the mindset of those who make the asinine decisions in your districts and on a National level. Make them force responsibilities upon the parents or guardians of these disruptive students. What is A/C ? Only get a stipend of 13k? Ahhhh how sad.

What did you do before you retired Bob?

I see all the criticisms of the teachers and from posters that have relatives in the profession like wives, sons and daughters. I bet they don’t think their relatives are lazy and goof offs but they are special, are better and different than the rest of the teachers. Interesting if not all are Republicans.

I don’t have any relative in the profession anymore since my sister retired 20 years ago but I’m fine with my younger relatives public education but most suburbs are fine. All the complaining is about inner city schools.
