OT: Any Burned Out Teachers in Here?

You don't know what you're talking about.
Can you please link all the articles to lawsuits from teachers who were fired for simply failing a kid. I’m sure there must be dozens if not hundreds right?

When every single post is about admins it’s beyond calling them out. Even when someone makes a legit complaint about teachers you ignore that and bring up admins
OK… Not allowed to call out the ones who makes up the rules… Gotcha.

Not surprised though.

A very disturbing scene in my friend/teacher's high school chemistry class. One kid demanded his phone back after completing the in-class assignment, and shortly thereafter nearly all the kids were massed at the door to the closet in which the phones had been stashed (routine). Instead of doing other work, they are addicted to sitting on their phones and playing Angry Birds, or whatever they do.

One of the kids said something like "I'll just kick you in the leg to get around you," when she stood in front of the closet (she is recovering from a broken leg)...

Hmmmm...it's going to be very difficult for Shelby to blame Schiano for this. Did the kid say "Keep Choppin" as he threatened to kick her and surely topple her over ?

Kid is probably trying out to replace Patel due to the premium thread about him.

On another note, I have a student in first grade who came from another country about 5 days before school. At his testing session, they noticed he has major signs of autism. He's non-verbal, stims, runs around the classroom and breaks things by throwing them around or at people. Anyway, he's in my class until he gets classified. Well,....if he gets classified, because the parents deny he has autism. Did I mention that he can't communicate when he needs to use the bathroom so he just pees and craps in a diaper? He's also destroying things in my classroom and is scaring all the other students.

It's been a great year so far!

Does it matter? My wife had that happen. School told her that she couldn’t fail anyone because of covid. She said you can’t, but I can. She sent an email to the kid, parents, and department head saying she earned an F. Then put an F is as her final grade. Told the admin to change it if they wanted to
I have done the same thing. Sometimes they change the grade sometimes they don’t.

Shameful. 6-7 and still in a diaper and the parents think that’s normal?

Yep and he's a twin so they actually have another kid the same age to judge him against. Not that he's lighting the world on fire either but he's definitely closer to developmental and academic benchmarks than the one I have.

It’s infuriating to see parents do this as if just goes away. Early intervention is so important.

He should be given a driver's license, a voter registration card and a hand gun.

Not one teacher is saying those aren't positives of the job. However, we're allowed to bitch about the downside of it too, especially when it's beyond our control.
Dconifer, who is not a teacher, posts in this thread because he thinks people should be aware of how much the atmosphere in the schools have changed...

Shelby approves. Shelby recommends also using the name in place of “he” in the sentence as well.

Then Maybe Dconifer and the others should listen to the actual teachers about the changing school climate. I have been a teacher for 26 years and the kids have not changed much, but the atmosphere of the school has changed a lot and there are several factors for that, some have been addressed here but some have not. I find it funny that the adults I have spoken to feel like the kids have changed when it is the opposite in all reality.

Dconifer listens to and considers the thoughts of anybody who has relevant knowledge on a given subject, and does not issue edicts on things he has no firsthand knowledge of...

Don't feel sorry for teachers. Good pay. weekends, holidays, and all summer off makes for a pretty sweet deal.

You can have all those things and be limited in the success of your calling, educating kids, by inane rules and politics. No need to be silent on that.

9 years left for Mrs. Smooth - she teaches elementary school kids in a nice Monmouth county town, yet the stories I hear border on insane

The “Nutured Heart” bullshit is some of the dumbest stuff around. No consequences for misbehaving, over the top parents and kids acting like jackasses bc they know nothing will happen

You’d have to be insane to graduate college these days and get into teaching or law enforcement - zero upside and huge risks make jobs once desirable not appealing any longer

WHAT COUNTRY?

My school finally decided to crack down on phones and headphones/earbuds in school. I could not have imagined the difference it would make. The halways are so much calmer, I am able to be light and fun with kids instead of always telling them to put phones away, and kids are actually speaking to each other out loud. If anyone needs strong anecdotal evidence that phones and social media are terrible for kids (I don't think anyone needs this evidence at this point), I have it.
My students are low and I have to teach them how to work hard, but they are nice, they are as well behaved as can be expected for middle schoolers, and I am having a good year. I attribute almost all of this to our change in policy.

There’s a lot of research out there on this. I wish more schools would implement it.

It’s a two-way street. Schools may be softer than in eras past but parents should look in their mirrors too and raise their kids to be better behaved, respectful and disciplined in class too.

I believe schools have backed off because they fear the parents, who will side with their children no matter the evidence against them.

Honestly, I saw that when I was in high school 25+ years ago. One teacher resigned over it.

And I swore then that Id never be like that.

lol no posts in this thread since May. Then school starts up again and 5 weeks later complaining about burnout .

You should come in and teach my class for a few weeks. You'd run for the hills once my autistic friend started throwing stuff at students, ripped your glasses off your face and broke them and you got no support from your administrators.

I didn’t say it was easy. Many jobs are not easy .
